Less Alcohol - JANUARY 2020- One Day at a Time

A stupid thought ran through my head yesterday late afternoon. I had accomplished a goal for a client that she was not expecting yesterday.
Well, being I can not get outdoors to do garden work this time of year ( my reward for all things good). I thought...wow, I should go into town and have a chocolate expresso martini because I am so proud to have helped her out today. Quickly that devil got knocked off my left shoulder by a slingshot hit from the angel on my right shoulder.
YOU KNOW YOU WON'T STOP AT ONE. YOU DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. HOW WILL YOU GET HOME? YOU WILL FEEL LIKE CRAP IN THE MORNING.
Gawd....for a little angel she sure does scream loud. Good thing, went home no booze.😇
First I want to thank you Miss May for always noticing our successes. Second I LOVE your story. My little angel is sometimes not as loud as yours. But your story reminds me to listen to the angel and to amplify her voice until it is LOUD. Thanks!
PS I have not posted in a very long time. But I am here, doing well and reading this blog helps.

I have had a stressful week at work and my MIL came down to help me with the kids as my husband is out of town for work. She is a big wine drinker, so I have found myself powerless to avoid it. It's a habit we are in when we're together. As a result, I've had a couple days of wine that I didn't plan on.
My goal for January is to drink only once a week. I think I'm pretty much beyond accomplishing that goal, but I am going to keep plugging away at trying to drink less.
Jan 1-7: AF
Jan 8: 3 drinks (2 glasses of wine and a small bit of brandy)
Jan 9-13: AF
Jan 14: 1 drink (1 glass wine)
Jan 15: 2 drinks (2 glasses wine)
Tonight my goal is to avoid alcohol, even though my MIL is still staying with me. It will be a big challenge!6 -
8 AF days this month.
Work has been stressful and I am feeling it at home, especially before bed. Anxiety creeping in. Trying to work through my feelings instead of shoving them down with food and alcohol.
Thanks to everyone who has posted. Love reading through them all and coming here for support.

I so hear you on that.
At least one of my drinks days in the week is for numbing myself a little after big work stress, mine are Tuesdays, which are generally 12-14 hour days of ridiculousness. I do think of other ways to combat that, but...liquor is quicker. Going to be working on that.
For me, other drinks days are days in which I know that I have nothing pressing for the next day and think of it as kicking back and having a few.
We are all cutting back on here. I no longer consider myself to be a daily drinker, although I have fallen a couple of times in the past year where I jumped right back into that habit.
At the end of the day it will be my vanity that saves me, since I look awful and bloated in the belly and face the day after drinking...if I have to be anywhere to be seen. So I have cut back/took an AF day, when I know that I need to be fresh and want to look good/professional the following day. More motivation on certain days where I feel like having drinks but don't because I would look terrible the following day. Where ever we can find a reason to drink less is a good place.4 -
As usual, I am going to try for 16-20 AF days for the month.
I just made it to 16 for December.
Wednesday January 01 - 3 drinks
Thursday January 02 - 3 drinks
Friday January 03 - AF
Saturday January 04 - AF - Had to delay and delay and delay today, really wanted to have drinks...but I didn't.
Sunday January 05 - 3 drinks
Monday January 06 - AF
Tuesday January 07 - 3 drinks. Although I have skipped some Tuesdays in the past, it is my designated drink day. I felt off the rails today and know that I need to make some changes with jobs, because the Tuesdays are increasingly just too much for me. Tough to find another job at 59, but the stress is ridiculous. That first sip of alcohol was nicely numbing. I know intellectually that it is not the best way to decompress, but it certainly is surefire and quick.
Wednesday January 08 - AF
Thursday January 09 - 3 drinks - worked early morning until 8pm today, started thinking by 7pm of having a drink when I got home after a grueling day...and I did. I sure am not racking up many AF days this month so far! I know that I won't get rid of that 5 pound gain over the holidays (which took me 7 months to lose!) unless I stop the alcohol. Work in progress.
Friday January 10 - AF. Planned wine tomorrow evening with a friend.
Saturday January 11 - Wine and Brandy. The conversation flowed so easily as those of you who have imbibed in alcohol know how that goes. I was pretty good about having a water in between each drink, that made me feel as if I was "drinking less". Ready to get serious about racking up some AF days soon.
Sunday January 12 - AF
Monday January 13 - AF
Tuesday January 14 - 3 drinks. Pretty much 1 for 1. Going to try to do a little better. No regrets for having drinks tonight. I am never going to be an abstainer, but definitely want to drink less.
Wednesday January 15 - AF - halfway to the lower end of my goal for the month.
Thursday January 16 - 3 drinks - wanted the 4th, but knew that it would make me throw up, so didn't. I need to get back to at least 2 AF days in a row every time.
Running tally: 8AF days out of 16 days so far.2 -

Not my best month – I did sober October then continued until about 10 November, so I can get through a month with less drinking than this – but not bad and there are only two days where I’ve had more than one drink. I’m 2 weeks into a new training plan and the motivation to nail the workouts is definitely helping. Tonight some friends are going out for drinks but because I have a ride on the schedule for first thing in the morning I’m probably going to skip it and have another AF one.

And I'm also limiting myself to 3 cups of coffee a day and drinking much more water.5 -
9/16 AF days for me! I definitely look better when I don’t drink (vanity, thy name is Woman!). Less puffy and haggard the next day- and this is even with one drink!
Tomorrow night we are meeting friends for dinner, but going to a “really cool bar” beforehand. Great. Normally I can nurse one glass of wine through an entire dinner. This bar thing puts a monkey wrench into the works. My plan is to EITHER have a drink at the bar and no wine at dinner, or an AF drink at bar, and wine with my meal. Either way, I can’t handle more than one, and I know I’m going to be the driver. Wish me luck!10 -
16 Days AF and today WILL be 17
I've been lurking on the thread this week reading about all or your successes and some challenges along the way!
It's incredibly inspiring to see how much bouncebackability so many of your old hands have! So many of you, if you hit a bump in the road or two are able just to hope right back on it again.
I know at some point my current enthusiasm will wane and I'll also hit a bump or take a wrong turn but you are giving me confidence that if I choose to I can get back on track again!!
My current plan is to stay AF until the 29th of Jan and the 1st if Feb when I have customer events at which I'll need to play host. Both will be really heavy nights and I'm dreading the hangovers already LOL Then I want to get back on it until the 20th of Feb when we go on holiday for 10 days to an all inclusive. I'm not gong to be AF for any of that But I really want to go back to this way of living as soon as we are back. Fingers Crossed
Good Luck with your weekends whatever your plans, goals or targets!
PS Special thanks to @MissMay for hosting this support thread!7 -

The Daybreak app evolved from the Hello Sunday Morning forum in Australia. One of the downsides is that it isn't free, though many people have found it quite helpful. Those of us who were using the HelloSundayMorning.org free site created a community site for those looking to change their relationship with alcohol by joining other like-minded people at www.newdayforme.org. It is free, safe, no advertising and open to anyone looking to cut down, moderate or quit drinking altogether. Though many start out cutting down, most eventually choose to quit and find that is the best for them.3

Good morning or evening to everyone.
So many wonderful posts to read.
Here is what I am really enjoying....the THOUGHT, the PLANNING, the AWARENESS, the MOTIVATION, the shared INSPIRATIONS of each and every post. Even if you have slipped up or have not made your goal for a particular day, you are still in here moving forward. it says alot of how much you want this.
It is my absolute pleasure, to those giving me kudos. I am right along side each of you with all the same struggles and bumps and successes, smiles and hopes.
In one week I will be calling this thread home for two straight years. I began by cruising the message boards one evening back in January 2018...looking for a needle in a hay stack. For people that had a passion for the same thing I was interested in, and I found this forum.
It was at that time hosted by @RubyRed427 who I believe took the reins from another person 2017 and prior. Not sure how long it has been a part of the MFP community. But as you can see there is still much desire to come here and be a part of our quest.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Welcome and thank you for the information and links @NewMeTomG. I get the free Hello Sunday Morning updates on my FB page, I like it very much. There is also another favorite of mine Mydrinkaware out of the UK (I am in the USA). Free also. I enjoy the interactiveness of being able to click in my non drinking day or number of drinks I consumed for each day. It will calculate money saved, calories saved, number of drinks consumed compared to the previous 28 days and so much more. Can never have to many resources or ways to help no matter the situation.

Hey everyone! I am proud to report that I was successful last night. Another night with my MIL, and she wanted some wine, so I poured her some and just had sparkling water myself.
Jan 1-7: AF (7 days)
Jan 8: 3 drinks (2 glasses of wine and a small bit of brandy)
Jan 9-13: AF (5 days)
Jan 14: 1 drink (1 glass wine)

January so far: 13/16 days AF
Tonight is Friday, and I had a heck of a week, and there is a possibility my husband and I will get to go on a date. If we do, I'm going to have a couple drinks. We NEVER get to go on dates. We've got two young children so having family here who offered to watch them is a pretty big deal. If that materializes, I will certainly enjoy a cocktail.6 -

@shorepine - I get that - a special night. Hope you get to go and if so, have a wonderful time!

At my favorite restaurant where I would normally get my “Johnny Martini.”
I actually abstained and had tea instead. Win!10 -

Day 17 AF. Don't have any plans to drink in February either unless my beloved Packers are in the super bowl. Then I may have 2 or 3 beers that night!7

I've been alcohol free for 8 months now (except for 1 glass of wine on Christmas Eve and one glass on New Years Eve) and it's the best thing I've done. I've been on MFP for 8 years, but it wasn't until I made this major step that I started to lose real weight not the same 2-5 pounds over and over again. I'm not going to say it's been easy.... but it has definitely been worth it.13

Hello and chilly morning to you all.
@Womona good luck at your dinner tonight and that really cool bar. You sound strong with a plan ahead of time.
@Stockholm_Andy nothing wrong with being enthusiastic Love it, keep it going.
@brittgreenlikethecolor88 how did your Friday weigh day turn out?
@shorepine date nights should be embraced and enjoyed. Hope yours was all that.
@lilann1961, @dawnbgethealthy and @BuffMom84 racking up AF days. 😊😊😊
Welcome and congrats @joanthemom8 on your less alcohol path. Amazing how many unaccounted for calories there is in alcohol. Nice work it is so worth it.

January 17 - AF - While sitting at home on a Friday is boring, I'm loving what abstaining is doing to my wallet AND waistline. Since I've stopped drinking, I am losing steadily and am loving it!7 -
@BuffMom84 My husband is from Milwaukee. He gets drunk pregame and stays that way bad you can hear him screaming down the road. Aaron Rodgers can't hear it, but the whole neighborhood can 😕.
To everyone meeting their goals, nice commitment! I had too many drinks on Tuesday. I'm either going to give up drinking altogether or buy those small bottles of wine, unless I have a person to share a big bottle with.7 -
I thought I'd follow the ideas of some of the posters and have AF "drink"
T&T (Slimline Tonic & Tonic) TBH I couldn't really tell there wasnt any Gin in them but I will be able to in the morning
8 -
I thought I was going to have a drink today as I have a rest day tomorrow, but it's past 7.30 and I'm not sure I can be bothered.6
