This! At 51 I started weight lifitng. I'm now 60lbs lighter, reduced my body fat to 24% from 40% and best of all - reversed the osteoporosis I'd been diagnosed with at age 48. Not to mention stronger. :) Lift it or lose it.

I have a Precor and like it very much --- but don't use it much. Am more of a gym rat (running, stairs and weight lift) than a home rec room exerciser. Husband uses it lots and likes it a bunch. Gym just got a lateral elliptical which is pretty darn good.

Daily. Every morning right after first pee. Naked. I enter my weight on an excel spreadsheet where I've set up weekly and monthly averages. I focus on my weekly average to monitor and assass my weight. I graph my weekly and monthly averages. Daily weighing keeps my focus on the long term cause I have the hard data going…

So sorry to hear this news! It has to be especially challenging since you've recently been experiencing the joy of being on virtualy par with him physical fitness-wise. There has to be things he can do working with therapist/training to maintain (minimize) his phisical fitness... I hope! Surely there are activities besides…

I enjoy spinning, just rarely go since the schedule at my gym doesn't usually dovetail with my time at the gym. Agree with Kim, it'd be fun to go with a group, Am guessing afternoons - to catch the post regular workday crowd?

Quoting: " Wolff's Law....an widely accepted reference on this subject. Wolff's law is a theory developed by the German anatomist and surgeon Julius Wolff (1836–1902) in the 19th century that states that bone in a healthy person or animal will adapt to the loads under which it is placed. If loading on a particular bone…

Now that I've met & friended you all I can say is WOW! Totally impressive not just the roomy skirt but your performance yesterday at the Zombie run - especially over the vertical wall!

that's the list I have for 11a.m. I hope I'm well enough by then to run..... this back injury is pretty consuming... but still just 48 hours out from injury. Last time I did this was in 1991 and it's hard to remember how long it took to recover. At least this time I'm smarter about getting help for it and I'm in better…

If I had knocked one of my vertebra out of alignment, I'd be sure to consult a doctor/physiotherapist/personal trainer before I did ANYTHING and would not be collecting bro-science to decide what to do.

An empty cup so I could fill it with (free) water. Or mayby a coffee, but no idea if the coffee is any good there.

Too funny... they didn't even know there were new machines. Sounds like you've got an answer though. I've never heard of these machines.

Grunting helps with that last push..... quite involuntary at times.... but I don't grunt at top volume. Come to think of it, I did a lot more grunting when I was in childbirth! :)

Wouldn't it be quicker if you asked an employee at the gym? Or maybe read the label and manufacturer on the machine then google it?

:flowerforyou: Just do it, you'll feel better, and you might find out that people probably just missed you.... not judged you. I know that when I see people again after a gap, I start the conversation with a "hey I've missed seeing you around! howya been?" I think more people are kind than are gossipy. At least the ones I…

Make the decision everyday and everyday is a success. After a while, you look back and a year and a half have gone by and 60+ pounds are gone.... for good. When people ask me 'how did you lose all that weight?" I used to say "you're not going to like my answer (especially if the person asking clearly should lose lots of…

Well said.... except, I think it's one thing to say 2-3 weeks to get the hang of it, another to make it a new lifestyle and be able to be on autopilot. In 19 months since I started, I've had plenty of maintenance and over days, but not a single day I wasn't committed to making a long term change. Maybe think of it this…

This is unclear to me. Both of your advisors are telling you to have no more than two servings (measured at 80 cal each serving) of fruit per day, and to that you should try to have that entire list daily????? There is no way that is just two servings and no way that adds up to 160 calories.

First off, congratulations on your success thus far. It's amazing! Good advise here. It's a great idea to incorporate strength training as you move forward from here. While I started strength training from the very beginning, it's never too late to start. Since you seem to have no experience with it, If you can afford it,…

OP: thanks for sharing the article. Another friend just passed it on to me, and after reading it, I was all set to post the link in the forum. Luckily I searched first and found you had already posted. What a sell out.

Dawn Patrol is the BEST! But not because it's easy to avoid newbies, more cause the gym is less crowded and it's a great way to start the day with such intensive "me investment time" As to newbies, yes we all were once. Whenever I see newbies, I try to catch their eye to give them a smile of encouragement. Especially for…

A good book for persepctive on teens: "Yes your Teen IS Crazy". Library will probably have it or spring for it on Amazon.

Mine is going to be 17 in six months and w've got it going on here too. Also she is our only child. A few years ago we had some difficulties in the family and went through family counselling which helped immeasurably. I don't bother correcting her on the phone, that's when she seems to think she can be at her worst. Like…

Coming late to the party here... Everybody has given great advise... the only thing I can think to add is to encourage you to drink lots of water (we often eat because we are thirsty, not hungry) and be patient; if you follow your program (eat less and exercise more) you will lose weight. At our ages it tends to come off…

What a beautiful and affirming NSV for you! Seriously, it brought tears to my eyes. I could so picture what she was saying..... Congratulations.

Moved here in 2010. Came here from Libya, have lived in 9 countrires. From the USA (Calif and Michigan) This city and the mountains next door inspire me, and are part of the reason I've managed to turn around my health and fitness. One of the best places I've ever lived. Wouldn't mind staying here, but I doubt that…
