  • That's fantastic! I know exactly how you feel. I started running at about 315 lbs and I was soooo slow. Like, mall walkers could have passed me when I thought I was running my fastest. I finished my first 5K at just under 60 minutes. I'm finally at about 45 minutes and it feels absolutely amazing. I'm really happy for you!…
  • I've been in Keto since September. I love it :-) I've never felt better. I lose consistantly, but more than that I just feel better. I have a gluten intolerance where any amount of gluten tends to make me very, very sick. A keto diet makes it easy for me to avoid gluten. I totally get that it's not for everyone, but it's…
  • If you're using a treadmill to run, try putting the incline at 1. It's such a small incline that you won't really notice it, but when my trainer had me do this a lot of my aches and pains went away and it felt a lot more like when I run outside. I didn't have that stress happening to different parts of my feet, ankles, and…
  • Congrats because you are already a success story!!! I started in the high 330s, I think 337. I'm at 254.5 as of this morning. So, you can't target an area of the body. You can work muscles there, but you can't target fat burn. Women tend to burn their stomachs last and usually it's the toughest. But the thing is, all…
  • I saw strength results almost immediately. Within two weeks I'd stopped having pain in my knees when I ran. Within a month I stopped needing any modifications to exercises due to my weak core. I suspect my weight loss was primarily from my diet, not my weight training. I saw muscles appearing within the first couple of…
  • Congrats on wanting to run! It's a lot of fun but hard at first. So don't give up because it will get easier. My advice: 1. Don't wait, sign up for that 5K right now, or as soon as you are able to. Having it looming in front of you will give you a deadline and an inspiration to keep going. 2. Get fitted for running shoes…
  • Usually when things aren't going the way we want them to go, you can find your answers in what you're eating. Without knowing more about you, anything could be happening. You could be eating more calories than you think you are - are you logging everything? Or you could be burning less than you think you are at the gym. If…
  • I got my thyroid levels checked about every month and a half in the beginning and they regularly required my dosage to be adjusted before I settled in. My weight loss stopped, started, stopped, started - you can't control it and there's nothing you can really do about it until your meds really kick in. It took about 6…
  • I love the Doctor! And all the other stuff mentioned here too. There's a convention beginning in my hometown this year called BritishFest that will be strongly celebrating the Doctor. It's a spin off from our local sci-fi convention and I can't wait to go :-)
  • I was 320 lbs when I started running. I used C25K to start, although I had to repeat the first few weeks many times over. Which was fine. I ALSO worked very hard at weight training to build up the muscles in my core and legs, especially around my knees. I did a lot of squats, lunges, calf raises, various weight machines,…
  • Doing C25K is great - but if you're in the 300s you have to also strengthen the muscle that supports the knees, abs, and back. Idealy, start strengthening these first, then start running so you don't hurt yourself. I started running when I was around 315-320 a little over a year ago. But I started strength training first…
  • You can add me if you like :-) I am in keto. I have a gluten intolerance that makes so much food a problem for me (I get pretty sick). So low low carb works well for me to not feel sick after eating. I've been in for about 18 weeks. You will feel better soon - the first 4 days were the worst for me. The first 2 weeks were…
  • Honestly? I started out weighing myself every day. Not really obsessively, but because I wanted to understand how my weight DOES fluctuate and change. I wanted to get a handle on understanding my body weight and how it's different in the morning, at night, from one day to the next, from one week to the next. I liked…
  • I started around 340 last February. I lost about 20 lbs before starting a low carb, high protein diet to help me combat not only my weight but my new gluten intolerance that had me sick all the time. Since switching what I have, I've dropped to 259 as of this week. Add me if you like!!!
  • Congrats on starting your running journey! I'm sorry it's been stressful. I started running when i was 320 lbs and I started with C25K. It took me like 18 weeks to complete the program and while I could complete it, I was sloooooooow. Which was fine. I didn't mind being slow. (almost 80 lbs down and I'm MUCH faster now!) I…
  • I'm also one that needs to work out on an empty stomach. When i don't I always end up feeling sick for most of the workout and I spend more energy working about feeling nauseous than I do about my work out. I warm up with a little cardio, then do weights, and then sometimes I do cardio. But I usually don't do them on the…
  • Weight training won't change your skin - but it will change what's UNDER the skin. Totally worth it for lots of reasons. But mostly you just need to give it time. A lot of time. A friend of mine had bariatric surgery and the doctor she talked to about removing loose skin told her to wait a year after she was done losing…
  • None, I think they are gross. They have such a weird chemical after taste. I use the real thing, but I've learned to use less of it. I only use it in coffee. I have tried nectresse (by the people who make Splenda) and it's not the worst thing I've ever had.
  • Running outside is impossible in the midwest in winter, so treadmills are it for us Nebraska girls until spring. Most days our temperatures hover around 0 degrees with unforgivable wind chill. I used C25K religiously to build up my ability to go for over 3 miles. This year I'm working on speed. I'm short legged 5'3 though,…
  • I usually see a 2-3 lb gain that lasts most of the week, and then drops off suddenly when I'm wrapping up. I don't really have crazy cravings, but I am more hungry, so I up my calories by about 250. I tend to eat a lot of nut mixes for about 250 calories throughout the day, and this helps. The salt helps me too. I tend to…
  • Agreed on everything everyone has said, although I would point out that even though targeting an area for exercise, weight training, core workouts, whatever may not burn fat in that area, once your body does burn the fat in that area you'll at least already have a start on really showing off the muscles there. So I would…
  • I love love love zumba! I feel ridiculous and also awesome at the same time. Like I'm in a movie where everyone breaks out into a dance sequence. I also burn about 760 calories during the hour according to my bodybugg. I use it as one of my cardio days during the week.
  • I agree with C25K. That's how I started. (I was 320 lbs when i started running! Anyone can do it and noone is looking at you.) I like running out doors, but I live in Nebraska and half the year the weather doesn't permit this. I also like running on a treadmill while I'm doing intervals or inclines or whatever because I…
  • You are absolutely welcome to add me if you like! I started my journey at about 338-ish. It was a struggle to get down to 320 due to other health issues I was experience. I finally decided that I clearly couldy do it on my own so I went in to the bariatric center at my hospital to talk to a doctor about surgery. What I…
  • I pay $128 for my Brooks Dyads. I love them and I've never felt bad about plunking down the money. I've owned 4 pair so far and they are worth it. I stopped injuring my right foot as soon as I got fitted for my shoes. Love them.
  • The best way to stay motivated? Pick a 5k you want to run that's a few months out from now. Register. Now you have a goal, you've put down the money, you're on the list of runners and have a target completion date. That's how I did it and it worked like a charm :-)
  • Lifting weights will help fill some of it out, but the best you can do is just give it time. Time will tighten things up to a degree, hydration will help keep your skin healthy so it can bounce back, and I have read that lotion will help with that. My doc recommended fish oil to me which I take for lots of reasons. A…
  • I ran my first 5k at 320 lbs!!! I also walked a lot of it, but that's ok too. Don't be nervous. I did the c25k and I had trouble getting past the first 3 weeks. I mean, I repeated week 1 about 4 times before I could move on to week 2. Then I repeated that about 4 times. Ditto for week 3. Then things got easier. So if you…
  • Not done yet, but these are my 2013 befores and afters. SW: 338-ish CW: 264 Height: 5'3
  • It takes time. It also takes great genetics. My doc recommends fish oil to help with skin elasticity. And weight training. Drink lots of water. There's no way to make your body target a specific area.
