  • Of course it is! Logging calories is the first step in creating awareness about how to consume a sensible amount. For ages I convinced myself that if it was healthy (fruit, veg, nuts, dried fruits, dips, fish, etc) I could eat it in unlimited amounts and my diet was 'healthy'. Logging calories made me aware that I was just…

  • Actually I disagree. I think if you mixed all of them together and drank 4 - 6 liters of the mix every day, then you would feel so ill you wouldn't want to eat anything else, and then you would loose weight. Hmm, I think I might have just come up with a new business idea.....
  • The other thing to consider is that maybe you are just loosing more slowly or have reached a plateau? I usually find that after loosing a bit for the first month or so, things really slow down and then I need to check measurements to stay on track. It isn't always just about the number on the scale.
  • Wow - thanks for all the great advice. I vary my workouts, as I am slowly settling into a rhythm that works for me. I rotate between the elliptical, bike riding (outside) and Pilates. I also aim for 20,000+ steps a day and 30 flights of stairs. But tomorrow has now been declared a rest day! I will still aim to do the steps…
  • It doesn't effect weight loss, but I always opt for room temp water because I can drink more of it than icy cold water.
  • I have the charge HR and I love it. I debated for a while about getting one, but found a good deal online and I am really happy with it. It helps motivate me a LOT! I am always looking out for extra stairs to climb, and make a conscious effort to move more.

  • I would second the insert comment. I suffered with painful feet for months, and it pretty much stopped me exercising in the end. I finally decided to go and see a Dr about it and she referred me to have inserts made for my shoes. This literally changed my life, and my feet were fine again within weeks.
  • Do you have someone (friend, partner) you can go shopping with? I make terrible clothing choices - big shapeless tops that are always a size too big, and make me look even more shapeless than I actually am. MY Dh on the other hand is a realist and quite good at being objective, so he is good to shop with. I tend to try and…
  • I have only had mine for a week, but I already love it (Charge HR) and it has really motivated me a lot. I now find myself looking for stairs to climb, and parking further away from places so I can make my daily step goals.

  • I would be divorced ;-) I don't think my DH could survive me without caffeine....
  • I love this one :-) And my own would be my fitbit - it forces me to be realistic about how much I am moving, and constantly reminds me to keep going.
  • I also think that sometimes it is hard when you see someone regularly. The odd lb lost here and there isn't as obvious as it is to someone who only sees you every few months. But I think that is really sad. Maybe you should turn around and be brutally honest. Tell her you are working hard and doing well and loosing weight,…
  • I have to say that I recently bought a fitbit, and it has been a HUGE motivator for me. I don't think they work for everyone, but I am constantly driven to climb extra stairs and walk further because I know it is being counted. It has also helped me develop a very realistic idea of just how active (or not!) I am from day…
  • I'll be working out, but only because it isn't actually Thanksgiving here - does that count? ;-)
  • Yeah that - I am also an ex-pat so I can understand how hard it is, but you need to step back and decide how you can make this work. It is all up to you, and this will be an amazing experience if you let it. Search out Ex-pat forums on the web in your area (trust me - there are loads out there). Menu plan and add exercise…
  • She did a great job, and it was really interesting to see how small things can make such a huge difference. I love seeing people's success pics on here - it really inspires me - but she made some good points, particularly in relation to people using these before and after pics to sell or promote something.
  • Switzerland!
  • I really needed the inspiration this morning. Thanks for posting. And I love that you are donating your old clothes too.
  • Going to someone else's house to eat makes a lot of sense. Even if you do over indulge, once you leave, you leave behind a house full of temptations, and can return to your regular eating at home.
  • I also have occasional 'stalls', but then drop a reasonable mount of weight quite quickly. I just try to be consistent and not look at the number on the scale too often. The other thing to consider is where you are getting your 'calories burnt' numbers from. Machines give notoriously high readings compared to a personal HR…
  • If it's a decent brand and set up right then it should be pretty accurate. Just be prepared for the calories to drop dramatically as you get fitter!
  • I would agree with getting a specialist fitting and some gait analysis. And looking around online for a better deal is a good idea too.
  • It took me a while to accept this, but it's true. My Polar FT4 is alarmingly accurate, and the machines are not :-( Stick with the reading from the FT4 (even when they are not what you want to hear!).
  • DH knows, and that's about it. Although today a good friend who I don't see often, noticed and that was nice.
  • I think it can take a while to find your 'workout type'. I am also one of those who signs up for classes I never really attend. But in the past couple of months I have discovered that I CAN get up early and work out at home! And I am not a naturally early riser. So now I drag myself out of bed 45 mins earlier, pull on…
  • This comes up fairly regularly here. I am always over my sugar limit (according to MFP) and I am type 1 diabetic, following an approved diet set by my Dr. I was taught that it isn't the amount of sugar you need to worry about, it's the type of sugar. Fruit and unrefined sugars are the best choice, so a piece of white bread…
  • Just once a week here. I am trying to notice improvements, rather than get too hung up on a number on the scales.
  • My husband knows and is my biggest supporter - I can't imagine doing it without him knowing. But i haven't told anyone else. I find friends fall into 2 camps - they either say, it's too hard, you will never do it, there is nothing wrong with your weight, etc. or they try to sabotage the whole thing by turning up on my…
  • Move to Switzerland ;-) Up until a couple of years ago full fat was the only kind around, and these days it is still harder to get low fat options! I find this particularly interesting in view of Switzerland's relatively low obesity rate. 'Diet' and low fat foods are still a minority group here.
  • I agree with everyone else - the sugar levels are ridiculously low. I am diabetic (Type 1), so I fully understand the importance of not having too much sugar in your diet. But with the levels on MFP even a glass of milk and a banana will put you over. I am over every single day, but the sugar in a banana is not the same as…
