  • In my school district in California, school typically goes from ~8a until about ~2:15p. I sub K-12. Students K-6 get one 10-15 minute recess and one 30-45 minute lunch break, about half of which goes to a second recess. The kids often tell me, especially during the spring semester, that they only get PE, which would be in…
  • I'm also going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the people who you're talking about are also not vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free, so I fail to see your point. People who don't like to cut stuff from their diet because it feels bad to them mentally tend to not cut any stuff from their diet if they want it.
  • I currently live in the Central Valley in California. We have lots of access to lots of cheap fruits and veggies because we grow them. I am also in the downtown-ish area of a city here. The grocery stores nearest us are mainly the bargain types, Foods 4 Less, Foods Co., Grocery Outlet. We also have several Asian markets…
  • It's an interesting concept, but I will say I'm amused by people reaching the conclusion that there's something magical about keto when like no variables were controlled. It could also be that he underestimated his TDEE, got sick, which for me at least often ends in greater weight loss, and is eating significantly less…
  • After adding more calories, fat, and protein, know that sometimes you have hungry days. It happens sometimes.
  • I feel like it's time for one of these: You're entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts. The Hubster works at Costco, which is one of, if not the largest by now, distributers of organic foods, so I suspect we eat a surprising amount of organic foods if I were to count. We do this because he works there and it's…
  • Iirc, he was referring to people over 70 who are also obese. If you already knew that, ignore me. ;)
  • I'm going to guess the weight loss is coming from an understatement of his TDEE combined with illness, even if was brief. I always lose more than expected when I'm sick and I doubt I'm the only one. ETA: It's been interesting to follow, though!
  • To you and @extra_medium: I guess you had to be there. Her attitude and body language suggested much more than a statement of fact. She was also making a large assumption that I wasn't aware of my own usual blood pressure and flat ignoring the part that sinus infections can cause higher than normal blood pressure in some…
  • It is pure speculation because the International Medical Council on Vaccination is full of woo. It's a site full of anti-vaxxer conspiracies disguised as medical knowledge, i.e. alternative facts. In the scientific community, there is no doubt about the efficacy of herd immunity and the good that vaccinations do.
  • Yeah. I think it's a yearly physical type of thing, not an every time you see a doctor for an unrelated problem type of thing.
  • The Milgram study suggests that ~65% of people will do something, even horrible somethings, because a person perceived to be an authority figure tells them to do it. From that perspective, yes, I think there is a tendency to trust "authority" too much. OTOH, though, we seem to be going to the extreme opposite, where your…
  • Both times that I've lost weight, I did it myself; no one told me I was overweight, including my GP. I think it was because she'd known me for so long, though, that she felt uncomfortable pointing out my weight gain. I don't know if it would have made a difference or not because I knew I was overweight. That being said, I…
  • I feel that if you call your product "It Works!" that it probably doesn't. I also have a couple of friends peddling this woo; one appears to have gotten the other one involved in her "business." This first friend is still very much overweight, despite having been selling it for well over 2 years, and the other doesn't need…
  • And if you're that concerned about the higher calorie items being left up to human error, which will happen no matter how well trained, skip it. Problem solved.
  • The Hubster's work offers them free to me (Yay, Costco!), so I got it this year. I usually forget, but am trying to be better about it because I also believe it is a civic duty to protect those who cannot, for whatever reason, protect themselves from these diseases.
  • I have the FitBit One and I love it! I only charge it every couple of weeks and don't use the sleep function. I don't have any personal experience with their wrist trackers, but the people I know with them are happy.
  • I love cupcakes, especially the fancy ones because one is more than enough. I'm not too big on frosting, so a single, special cupcake really hits the spot!
  • The Blueberry Pie Oreos are what dreams are made of.
  • Lots of people can't live within their means due to low wages, or if they do, they have no extra per month and not because they're spending too much. A recent article demonstrated that a full time, minimum wage job will not afford you rent in any major US city. These things contribute to why it's more complicated than a…
  • Haha right. I think if our priorities were different, people may feel like they weren't overtaxed, since the numbers just really don't support that conclusion. Add I'm things like direct democracy at the state level and things get messy. In California, voters always tend to vote for new programs, i.e. stuff from the…
  • I was recently in Arizona and their produce prices made me sad. I do live in the Central Valley, though, so produce is stupid cheap, especially when in season. Prepared food is taxed where I am, but necessities are not. I agree that this tax would just make it harder to be poor, which is already hard enough. I disagree…
  • I see your point but PF Chang's, if that's where it was, is likely not the best example since they advertise themselves as "family style" or at least they do around here.
  • See, that's what I'm most concerned by with the new serving sizes. I think encouraging reasonable portions is good, not just reflecting how much people overeat and altering the calories listed per serving based on that. The personal pizza is a good example of a serving size v. entire item that ought to be changed, just…
  • Mega Stuf Oreos have too much filling. They're almost not enjoyable.
  • I think Lindy's view that there is no correct weight for people is the problem a lot of people seem to have with the FA movement because it's not completely accurate. I do think that there's a point where the health risks cross a line, but where that line is is going to depend on the person. This isn't to say that I think…
  • I am Option 1 and I've lost over 50 pounds always being Option 1. I'm not hungry or deficient in anything. I also routinely run half marathons and have done a few fulls, a 50k, and a ~60 mile bike race. I fail to see how that isn't a good option.
  • I think of it kind of like cancer remission. Yes, the cancer may be "gone," but that doesn't mean that you're completely cured or not at higher risk for cancer again. As time goes on, the risk lowers, but from my understanding, it is never again as low as someone who hasn't had it.
  • I found them in a Safeway in Arizona. I'm from California, too, and haven't seen them there, but maybe a Vons or Safeway.
