  • Upper 30s - feel free to add me! (Unless you're looking for flirty chats... I don't do those.) I'm a new mom struggling to eat well and be fit again, despite having been successful with MFP for a few years.
  • I got diagnosed last week and started with the glucose meter and nutrition plan this week. Feels like trial and error so far. It's frustrating because I had good diet/exercise/weight going into the pregnancy, and worked hard to maintain it throughout -- then the results of the glucose tolerance test. :/ :s I'm in week 30.…
  • Most places will offer you a trial period, like 1 visit or 3 visits to see how you like it. Before I joined my Y, I got 3 free visits and that included classes (the ones free with membership). Trial runs are a good place for you to start without committing. And I find that Ys are friendly to all kinds of people. We have…
  • Mondays - Zumba class Wednesdays - swim (less lately with the blizzards) Fridays - Kickboxing class Saturdays - Kickboxing & Circuit Training class I find all of them combat stress, because they keep me focused and expend lots of energy. And I have lost all the weight I wanted, but I still have a little belly pooch.…
  • I don't think Paleo or any special diet is necessary. My levels had been in the right place for years, so once I started using MFP and exercising I was able to lose the weight. I also take Synthroid. I don't know if there's an optimal carbs/fat/protein percentage -- I just used the presets MFP gave me. Trying to meet…
  • I've worn it dozens of times in the pool. You won't break it.
  • I love mine and don't have too many issues with it. Sometimes when I'm swimming it loses the signal, but I guess some of that is to be expected. In Zumba it works fine, but in kickboxing it sometimes resets itself or loses the signal momentarily. Not sure if the impact of getting kicked by somebody jars the device or what.
  • I wore my heart rate monitor the other day and didn't burn quite that much. 324 in almost an hour and a half. I went out for a follow-up shovel but didn't wear the HRM. I wouldn't log it if it were only 30 minutes, but when I'm out there for 90 minutes to 2 hours I'd say that's legit. The stuff is heavy and I'm throwing it…
  • What she said. And OP, how would you determine if the herbs were working? I know some people want to go the "natural" path, but I'm sticking to my Synthroid. I think if it was as easy as herbs or diet alterations, we'd all be doing it.
  • Thank you for adding that! I get tired of "Chinese food" being synonymous with unhealthy, fatty, greasy, caloric, etc. Like lots of home cooks, I use fresh, good-quality ingredients and I'm conscious of the amount of cooking oil I use, whether I'm cooking Chinese food or other stuff, and my mother was the same way when I…
  • I've done both, but lately I'm focused on eating before and find it fuels me better for strength and endurance. I aim for 90 minutes before my workout, so I have time to digest.
  • I've never heard of DHEA... had to look it up. Always learning something new here! I take Synthroid and it seems to mostly work for me. To answer your question, I always eat back my exercise calories. These day I try not to eat back all of them. I read an MFP blog post recently about eating back exercise calories, and it…
  • Hypo here, non-Hashi. I've had it 10 or 11 years now, and am on Synthroid. Lost 25 pounds, and have been in maintenance for about a year and a half. OP, I sent you a friend request. Anybody else can feel free to send me one.
  • Another vote for the Polar FT7. I love mine! Also got it at Amazon. I use it during Zumba, kickboxing, and swimming.
  • I dye mine brown-black to cover the greys. I also do the conditioner-before-swimming thing, and use a swim cap. Water tends to seep in, but I figure it's better than full-on exposure to the chlorinated water. I also stopped shampooing every day. I only swim once or twice a week (I do other workouts), and I try to wash my…
  • I'm new to swimming myself, and once got yelled at for not asking before I jumped in. The man was swimming in a circle and didn't know I was there until we almost collided. So I always ask. I've also complained to a lifeguard before when people wouldn't stop jumping in without asking. Sure, I'll split a lane with that…
  • Can I trade places with you, OP? I'd love to be 19 again *and* exercise! At your age I felt like you did, but now I'm hooked. I sometimes imagine how much more I'd do with the extra energy and strength of my teens and 20s. Not trying to convert you, just being wistful. :)
  • Maybe you shouldn't knock it before you try it? Maybe you'll lose the weight and meet a girl who's interested, and in the middle of all that animal attraction you won't care what she might have thought of you XX pounds ago? Maybe she'll be the love of your life, and vice versa. My point is, don't let a hangup about what…
  • 5'2 here! I started at 146, felt confident at 125, and am now 119/120ish. I still have a little extra around my tummy and upper arms, but the chub came off my face and I couldn't be happier with my legs. How did I do it? MFP, of course. :D And lots of exercise.
  • I'm 5'2 and in maintenance... lost at 1400 calories a day eating back all exercise calories, and maintaining at 1600. I'd say be patient. 1 pound in 3 weeks can be frustrating, but I only lost an average of 1 pound a week (sometimes it was zero) yet still got to the finish line. 1200 sounds low to me, especially if you…
  • An extra 100 calories for one day won't add on anything. Also, gaining a little during maintenance isn't like this slippery slope you can't recover from. :) I've put on 2 or 3 pounds here or there, felt the pants get tighter. Just step back, eat well again, and exercise -- it comes off. Or reassess if that doesn't work.…
  • I haven't tried the Wii boxing, but I can say that kickboxing with another person is way more rigorous than cardio kick. You expend a lot of strength and energy striking an object rather than the air.
  • I'm near Boston. Feel free to add me.
  • Stick to your guns and tell her you don't want the food, and thanks but *she'll* have to take the extra food home. Since you bend, she keeps doing what she's doing. You're not forcing anything on each other if she eats what she wants, and you eat whatever/if/when you want. Good luck!
  • I've taken both Levo and Synthroid and never experienced what you describe, but it's really bad to just stop taking them. You've been diagnosed with a health condition, and it needs to be treated. Talk to your doctor about your anxiety.
  • I'm also a beginner (I only learned to swim last year, and only started doing laps in the deep pool this spring), and I get being worn out. I thought I was in good shape, but swimming works your lungs and endurance in a whole 'nother way. It'll take time to work yourself up to good distances, plus there is the technical…
  • You could try what I did: Set your goal to 130 and reevaluate when you get there. I'm 5'2 and today weighed in at 119.8 (starting weight: 146). You can check out my pics on my profile, but like someone pointed out not all 5'2 or 5'3 women look the same. There are bigger and smaller builds. Just get to where you are happy.
  • Supposedly iron interacts with Synthroid also, so wait a few hours before taking a multivitamin or iron vitamin. Or red meat, I guess.
