I nearly always eat back my exercise calories, has worked fine for me

white rice or white bread

exercise and fun only for me, I live so close to the shops it's not worth the hassle of securing the bike at the car park, easier to walk so I rarely need the car anyway and my workplace is 95 miles away so not really a choice for commuting. I do use my bike a lot though.

+1 70%+ dark chocolate is fine, just not too much of it in one go, leave the milk chocolate alone though (I don't understand how they are allowed to even call that stuff chocolate)

Polar FT4 does everything I need it to, very good value

I do HIT cardio work, mostly on waterrower machines, intervals up to 95% max HR. I could manage roughly 10 minutes when I started (in fact I almost threw up) 2 months later I was doing 45 minute sessions no problem, just keep at it.

I would not worry about it, I just watch the carbs. I'm diabetic (very well controlled primarily through diet and exercise) and contrary to popular belief sugar (sucrose) is not as much of a problem as starchy carbs (flour etc) and fruit (fructose). the really bad one is High Fructose Corn Syrup which is twice as bad as…

I should have carried on with the sports I loved, that's the only thing I would change

you are not eating enough, your net calorie deficit should not be more than around 500cals. If you reduce your calorie intake to much your metabolism slows right down and if you do this for too long you may create permanent metabolic damage. A common guideline is that you must never eat less than 1200 net calories,…

I'm 57, and live in Folkestone. I've been on a low carb lifestyle for around 6 months now, feels like slow progress but I'm getting there, occasionally find it difficult, but am persevering anyway, just take each day as a new day and forget any past screwups, no point worrying about the past - look to the future. I row and…

marinade it in white wine, olive oil, garlic and onion for 4-8 hours, then grill or fry it a t a low temperature while basting with the marinate to keep it moist. Absolutely delicious

I'll do a deal with you. You buy me a gym membership and I'll do all your workouts for you.

Made the mistake of listening to my doctor and increasing my carb intake, coupled with an incredibly stressful job which got in the way of my mountain and watersports, so major increase in the type of calories that I really can't metabolise well, coupled with lower level of exercise. I quit my job, changed back to a lowish…

I weigh every day too. provided you understand your body's weight fluctuates considerably throughut the day/week cycle and don't get freaked out by it why not? The overall trend is what counts.

People were happy with a 2oz burger, nobody ever "went large", our legs actually worked so we walked a lot more, less processed foods and we were generally a lot more active back then. I used to walk or cycle to work (4 miles each way) every day. Didnt need to go to a gym to get exercise.

I had the same thing, I started to eat back more calories and started losing again

lol, that looks like a heart attack wrapped in a carb bomb to me, but sooooo tasty!

I endorse the recommendation for the Polar FT4, and you can use the PolarFitness.com site to calculate your workloads and recovery times too

I know a lot of people that have had bad stomach problems with metformin, many have resolved this by having their prescription changed to Slow Release Metformin, this is what I am on and I have had very few problems after the first week or so. Anothtor can be if you go onto a high dose too fast, most doctors seem to…

well looks like my motivation just took the day off, back on track now :-)

Thanks for the responses. I'm 5'11" tall, currently 192.2lbs in weight, fairly heavily built (think ex rugby player). I started out initially with a 1200 net calorie intake and recently increased that to 1430 net calories for the very reason mentioned. I am actually eating more than my basic energy requirement of 1900…
