  • In each set, are reps 12-15 hard to finish? Are you spending more than one minute between sets and more than one to two minutes when you go from one exercise to the next?
  • What's the general routine you are doing for your strength training sessions (Exercises, sets, reps)? How much time are you resting between sets and how do you spend the time you are resting?
  • Definitely try the Injinji socks then. I'll bet it does the trick. Nothing to lose, right : )
  • Go barefoot or get some Vibram Five Fingers. However, gradually ease into them. There is a "How To" guide at www.birthdayshoes.com . Sounds odd to have a how-to guide to shoes, but many people feel so good in VFF's that they overdo it and end up with injuries--especially to the achilles or calf. A friend of my that also…
  • MyFitnessPal beginner triathlete calc0time (I use this for adding up workout times) Run Speeds (very basic-- you just punch in your time and distance to get your pace per mile).
  • Have you ever heard of Dulse? Its a seaweed which has a mild sea-salty taste. You can get it in a ground dried variation and shake it on food as a seasoning, or what I like, is you get it in a bag in a leaf form--you can chop it up and mix it in salads, fry it and it gets crisp, or chop/shred it and throw some in to rice…
  • Actually, whey protein is the least beneficial of all of them and the most impure. That's why its cheap and Jillian and other celebs on the packaging. Like someone said above, 'you get what you pay for'. Its no wonder you can get a 5 lb jug for $20. Whey is the 'high fructose corn syrup' of proteins. Its also one of the…
  • Like it. I'll have to check out Burn The Fat by Venuto. Thanks.
  • I try to always keep Clif Bars on hand. I try not to eat too much pre-packaged stuff, but Clif Bars are not your typical bar. Trader Joe's has several of their flavors. Walmart has them in 5 & 6 bar boxes for pretty cheap.
  • Ok, yes, the studies I refer to are based on post exercise, but I assume it crosses over to regular life based on other data (some below). But as you said, its important to consume a proper ratio post-exercise though. Although I am skeptical of 'governing' agencies due to their influence by lobby groups, the U.S.…
  • It depends if you mean how much they say in percent, or strictly by grams. Percentage is an individual thing and there's no magic combo and it depends on what you are doing and what your goals are. However, when it comes to grams, it might be low if you believe what the FDA and RDA says. Their fat and protein…
  • I disagree on the polar. Too over marketed, too monopolizing, too last decade. I use a Suunto T3C and an EKHO. The Suunto has some extra bells and whistles, like GPS (but no mapping and other stuff that Garmins have). What's nice is that the watches are very small because the GPS is a separate pod so you don't have the…
  • THRIVE by Brendan Brazier (especially if you want to make your own energy bars/gels). His books are 'vegan' based, but he never pushes that view. If I remember right, one of the books only had the word 'vegan' on the cover. Instead of preaching vegan, he shows you what is acidic, what is alkaline, and says to make sure…
  • Ok, I sounded a bit ranty. Sorry about that. Knittnponder summed it up--too many carbs=sluggish; too few=low energy. Whoever has a few extra pounds to lose probably got there by consuming too many calories made up of excess carbs, protein, and fat--most of which was probably processed. Basically, overeating. Tracking it…
  • @ lodro. Thanks for the articles. The person who posted this asked if high protein/low carb is the way to go. My answer was solid. Its not the way to go. The links you provide show studies of which diets work the best for weight loss. High protein/low carb will drop the weight faster almost every time. I don't argue that.…
  • No. Not good. You might as well throw the protein in the garbage. For each gram of protein to be used by your body, it needs 4 grams of carbos. When your protein is high, it is only filling your stomach, but not being used by your body (so its not fueling muscles/muscle growth without the carbs present). It stresses your…
