Hmmmmm interesting, regional variation or just differences? To me a mile is 1,600m (metres) - 64 lengths of a 25m pool. The open water lake events I've swum in most often offer 500m, 1 mile and 3.8km swims - nicely inconsistent :) The quarry pool near me has a 500m lap (circuit) so does timed swims over 500m/1,000m/1,500m.…

Well done and happy new suits! One other thing to consider - half the people in there probably can't even see you that well if they're not swimming in their glasses

She's rude and way out of order. Get in that lane with her. I don't ask and never will - it's not the other swimmers' pool any more than it is mine so I don't think I need to ask anyone's permission. If someone has paid for private use of a lane then the lifeguards put a marker board at each end to let everyone know. What…

Great goals all round :) This year's goal for me is to do a longer distance open water swim. First thought was the 5k lap of Buttermere, doable after the Ullswater 3.8k in 1hr22 last summer. But now some triathlete friends are talking about arranging an end to end of Coniston - 5 miles - very tempted but will be a…

Update - she did it in 11:00, I was tagging behind at 11:09 - she'd have smashed that time if she wasn't bothered by seeing the submerged boats, statues and divers - back to natural lakes for her next open water pb, she prefers slightly green water to crystal clear! Hope the blue green algae in Windermere subsides soon…

I swam open water today - felt a bit odd doing just the one 500m lap, like I'd just got going lol, but that was all my girl wanted to do, see what time we did when they post the results

swam at the dive centre beeautiful  3 x 500m laps then lots of splashing around while the kids jumped off the deck
-
Well done conniekat - we knew you'd get back in there! And you know it's going to get better the mmore you go

No swim today - taking kids to cubs and swim training Did a mile at the tri open water session last night - bit achey today but I think that's from pushing it to get round fast and line up for their bbq, lol

Signing in again after fantastic weekend in the Lake District - feeling extremely lucky to live close enough to visit and swim in these amazing places Saturday, swimsuit swim pootling freestyle in Ullswater with stops to chat to my friend and cheer on swimming triathletes - she clocked it as 900m and I'm not arguing Sunday…

Sounds like some of you have dedicated places to swim if this isn't your norm - I've never been in a 'lap pool' but I'm guessing that is like the 'lane only swimming' we get here for 90 minutes on a Wednesday night. At least they lok well behaved - no bombing, no pushing, no petting ;-) Hope you find a quieter time to get…

2000m - couldn't resist doing a fourth lap today and it wasn't even that cold
-
Hi again - not checked in for a few days, apologies for leaving the Coniston question hanging, thanks for picking it up 60sPanda  Today will be much colder - wetsuit will be on at Capernwray - a local dive centre in a flooded disused quarry that allows swimmers, so long as you've registered (swim fees much cheaper…

Swam a teeny bit yesterday - 15 mins in Coniston Water, temperature took my breath away at first but beautifuil once you're in - no wetsuit required  Would have loved to do more but wasn't fair to make kids stay out of the water any longer while mummy had her head down swim so we just splashed around together after…

Thanks for the link from me as well - I'd logged my Wednesday night swim as moderate effort but swimmingcalculator.com calories equate to mfp's vigorous effort  Shame I can't get to the pool tonight to shift the jaffa cakes I troughed earler, lol

Just found this check in  Swam last night, lane swimming at the pool, 4 x 500m freestyle in 45mins (30 - 60 sec rest breaks) Looking forward to 3.8km on the 13th http://www.epicevents.co.uk/open-water-swims/ullswater-epic-lakes-swim-july-13th-2014.html

If I'm making meringue  and use the yolks for custard, or add them to whole eggs for super rich omeletter or scramble mmmmmmm

Erm, sounds like your average public session in the UK. I'm lucky that the pool I swim in now generally has 1 or 2 roped off lanes, otherwise no lane ropes means no lanes and no expectation that any has swimmer has priority over another. It's an opportunity to practice your spotting technique and sets you up nicely for the…

Whatever works for you  Personally, for me, I find mfp consistency over-rated - it's the flexibility here and the realisation that one pig-out day/weekend isn't going to undo everything that has gone before that keeps me coming back and losing. In the past I've started diets then felt so bad, even guilty, when I…

Congratulations!!!! I can see a massive difference in your before and after pics - you've changed shape but you also look happier and stronger! Huge respect to you for changing your lifestyle and taking up the running and swimming challenges. Stick with it girl, you're doing great!!   :drinker:…

Hi I've done a bit of open water swimming in the last 4 years - Great North in Windermere and Epic Events swims in Ullswater and Derwent Water. I love it!! This year I'm building up from 1 mile swims to 3.8km. Long post coming up but hopefully this is useful. Get yourself a swim wetsuit, not a general or surfing on…

Love this thread - amazing transformations. My before is 231lbs last August and the during pics are 187lbs last week

Hi, my daughter went through a phase like this when she was eight/nine gradually came back to eating meat with the rest of us, she's now 11. We try to eat as a family as much as possible - things that were our staples included lots of garden peas & beans added to things like: omelettes - plain/cheese with whole eggs but…

Hiya - sciatica is truly horrible - been there, done that. If your goal is to drop weight you don't need to exercise, eating at a deficit will do it. Please be very careful about exercising - if you're in touch with your gp, physio etc then ask them what you should do. Not that many qualified people on this site and even…

I love swimming and yes it can be a great workout - difficult to recommend time/distance without knowing how well you swim. I think this is a great setup: http://www.swimming.org/swimfit/about-swimfit/ it's free and you can adjust the programme to suit your level of swimming and adjust as you progress. Their calorie guide…

My grandma used to peel mushrooms so that's what I learned to do but now I just wipe, only peel these days if they're getting a little old and slimy. If I was picking them in the wild from a field of cowpats rather than getting them cultivated indoors I think I might be peeling them like grandma did  And I always…

I don't. But I have had to speak up at home to avoid unintended consequences. On a Friday night I've cut back to one or two glasses of wine from each bottle and a single handful of crisps - hub was still finishing off the bottle and packet, same as when I was having (at least) as much as him. It's a bit like when I was…

Never had this from an adult but out of the mouths of babes..... I'm a parent helper at Beaver Scouts and 3 weeks ago, about the time I was pretty proud of myself for getting from 231 lb to onederland, one of them asked if I had a baby in my tummy. I smiled and said no baby in there, just lots of cake Nohing like a reality…

Spend a few minutes watching what others are doing - pools do vary e.g. for lane swimming ours has alternating lanes clockwise/anti-clockwise/clockwise and so on - you swim in the same direction as the swimmer in the next lane and less likely to clash arms over the lane rope. The direction is marked by boards at the end of…

Try increasing your calories - eat more for the next 2 weeks, see how that goes Don't you worry about your wife - she's clearly feeling insecure about your efforts to get fitter and sexier - never mind you size or age you rock those booty shorts babe!
