  • I'm 5'1" and 37 years old. I don't know my weight (I'm too scared to weigh myself!) but it could be anything from 125lbs - 140lbs based on how I feel and how my clothes fit right now. I think my BMI goes into the overweight category at 132lbs so I'm borderline. I'm more comfortable at 105-115lbs. I'm relatively sedentary…
  • sijomial - thank you; that's a more reassuring way to look at it. I really don't want a diet controlled by numbers in too many ways. I get very easily obsessed (have a long history of eating disorders but am now probably too lax with what I eat and am at the top end of what is healthy for me or borderline overweight (not…
  • Ok, fair enough if the macros don't matter, that's easy. I assumed mfp would set them at some kind of generally advisable level though so didn't want to ignore them. Lietchi - I don't like oils or spread unfortunately, which are the only fat only options that are, I think. Also dislike avocados and all nuts except…
  • If that's you in the picture then yes, I would imagine you are eating way too little. Consequences - I don't know - weakness, tiredness and irritability in the short term. Difficulty sleeping or maintaining concentration perhaps. In the long term you would become underweight and undernourished. Probably.
  • Of course it won't make you fat. Terribly unhealthy though. And I say that as a 6 can a day diet coke addict - thinning teeth, heart palpitations, nervous energy, sporadic insomnia. It's not a good thing to be addicted to if you can avoid it. I'm quite thin though. I'll drink diet coke instead of eating or drinking…
  • No. I have days when I want to eat a lot more but they're always the days I'm not doing much on. Which means I should need to eat less I suppose. So I know it's boredom not hunger.
  • If it's only walking, I really really wouldn't eat extra. Walking is just part of life so should be accounted for in your 1200. It's specific workouts that some people choose to allow extra calories for.
  • If you're only awake for 4 hours some days then 1400 calories must be waaaay too much. You must be eating for most of the time you're awake! Even with 14 hours sleep, your TDEE will be lowered. And, with your broken back, I'm guessing you're completely sedentary even when awake. It sounds really awful for you but, tbh,…
  • You may be eating more than you think. You've lost 9lbs over 3 months. That *is* slow, steady weight loss. You haven't lost too fast at all. Having said that, if your mood and energy has been poor, maybe you are being accurate. In which case I think you could increase to 1200 and still lose at the same rate. I doubt the…
  • I really don't know. Ask this question here a year or so ago and almost everyone would say that yes, eating back your calories was necessary to lose weight and that by eating more you would lose more. It never made any sense to me. Nowadays all that seems to have gone away and most people now say you should eat as little…
  • Eat massive bowls of red pepper and carrot. Sweet, filling and very low calorie.
  • It will work if you eat 1200 cals or less of it. Won't be good for you though.
  • Woah - I'm seriously jealous! My maintenance amount is around 1350 net.
  • 2090?! That seems like an awful lot of calories to me. Assuming from your user name that you're female? I don't think many females need to eat that much (net) even to maintain.
  • I don't think a grilled chicken breast would have more calories than any other kind would it? Raw weight of chicken breast is 105 cals per 100g I think.
  • I'm really surprised that such a small amount of food can fill you up - are you sure you're not just worried about eating more rather than unable to. 800 a day is very low. I have an eating disorder and get very worried if I'm over 1000 calories - but that doesn't mean I *couldn't* eat more - I'm not often physically…
  • I chop it up into small bits and stir fry it.

  • I'm not a doctor or an expert but I thought Ketosis was pretty dangerous. I have a friend with diabulimia and when she hits ketosis she's in danger of going into a coma and dying! Is it different if you aren't diabetic?
  • Huge congratulations. What an achievement :)
  • I have this problem at work. I eat tuna and salad from the canteen every day and am not allowed to bring my own. I've just guesstimated - hopefully on the high side.
  • Do you mean all carbs or just starchy ones? I don't eat bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, oats, wheat etc and have noticed no ill health effects at all (except that when I do break my diet and eat them I feel like death afterwards) But I eat loads of fruit, vegetables and coconut water so I get plenty of carbs that way. I…
  • Dried fruit doesn't usually have any more sugar in than fresh fruit (unless it's been added). The problem is that the drying makes it so small. I could easily eat 12-15 dried apricots in 10 minutes without feeling full at all but would never manage more than 2-3 fresh apricots at a sitting. I drink coconut water at work.…
  • What helped me lose weight fast? Not eating! Did it stay off? Nope!
  • Ohhhhhh. See, I didn't even know it was possible to cook like that in a domestic kitchen!! Normal frying would be another solution to the problem though. You'd know you were using all the oil you put in and the food would taste the same.
  • I have tuna, cucumber and lettuce or celery every day for lunch - comes to approximately 160 calories (not sure exactly because it's a school canteen so I have to take the tuna without weighing it. Low for a whole lunch though and I've gone from hating tinned tuna to loving it.
  • ^^ Oh, ok, I see. Kind of. But why don't you just use the amount of oil you need and not leave any behind?? Sorry if I'm being thick - cooking is NOT my forte!
  • I don't understand - why don't you just log the amount of food and the amount of oil as separate items? Surely the calorie content doesn't change because they end up mixed together. I fry chicken or fish every day and just log the raw weight of the protein plus a teaspoon of oil which I measure out. So 200g of chicken…
  • Salmon is really expensive (at least it is in the UK). However healthy it is, it would be awful to buy and eat it while trying to disguise its flavour because you don't like it! I love it but it's a treat. Thinking of deliberately making it tasteless makes me sad!
  • eat those long sweet red peppers. So so good. Much nicer than chocolate or sweets or anything. And about 35 calories for the whole thing. They have seriously transformed my life!
