Thank you both for your responses. I would prefer sticking with a hamster because of the size of the cage and already having everything we need for it. Raspberry - Can I ask what issues you were running into with your previous hamsters? Maybe Hammie had a similar issue. I am truly at a loss as to what caused her death.

I'm from Jackson, Michigan but I currently live in Rives Junction, Michigan which is like smack dab in the middle of southern Michigan. We go to Frankenmuth once a year around Thanksgiving with the whole family and make a day of it. Northern Michigan is kind of the area we want to be. Thanks for all the suggestions!
