  • I honestly can't tell if you're serious or trolling... but the "hashtag" symbol has been around longer than twitter and it can stand for "number". So she was asking about her maintenance number.
  • Congrats on your success, and great job! My only other nitpick not already mentioned is the "Quinoa is awesome" -- not really. I fell into the healthfood bandwagon on this one and was incredibly disappointed. It's massively overpriced now because of how popular it's gotten, and tastes no different than grits or polenta.…
  • Yea except you're forgetting what I like to dub "The Great BMI shift of 1998" http://www.bigfatblog.com/bmi-change-1998 Edit: To elaborate on my point, you cannot compare these obesity statistics to time before 1998 because the government essentially redefined obesity (by redefining BMI to make once "healthy" ranges into…
  • Great job! And I totally get the "still being scared of pics thing" -- I was too still for a long time, BUT get more pics and you might be surprised! I finally let some be taken and it's kind of eye opening to be like "... that's me?"
  • Looking great! I started at similar stats, though a little shorter, and I have about the same goal so I feel you there! One thing I always like in these progress pics is how much better everyone's posture always is  And as for the rest, you can do it!
  • Oh and here's a link to a BF calculator that uses the US Navy formula. Results taken with a grain of salt. http://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
  • The second best method of measuring body fat (behind the water tank) is getting a professional to do it with calipers. There they measure the size of your (for lack of a better term) fat folds on certain parts of your body, and from there can get a rough estimate of total body fat %. Supposed to be pretty accurate if done…
  • Can I just say I hate men and how much easier they lose? =P Well, if it's working for you that's great. I would only suggest keeping track of body fat% and muscle% -- since you're doing a LOT of cardio but little weights, you could be losing more muscle than intended. I mean, exercise is better than no exercise and all,…
  • Personally I find this post quite patronizing. Sure, there are a lot of people out there who think staying the same for 2 weeks is a "plateau". And there are those who think staying the same weight for 2 weeks despite the fact they haven't logged everything and got a little lazy is a "plateau". But it's patronizing to…
  • First of all, it's percentages, so let's put it in perspective: 1: 232 lbs * 0.49 = 113.68 lbs fat 2: 227.8 lbs * .5 = 113.9 lbs fat This means your body fat in lbs has barely changed even taking into consideration that the scale could be innacurate. Also (and I don't mean to disparage your results, 5 lbs is good loss!)…
  • You may hate to hear it, but it's probably hard for you to lose because you're already very close to a healthy weight. You're within the normal BMI, and from my research I hear it's good if older women have a little extra (5-10lbs) on them--it's usually better health indicators for bone density, etc. Have you tried taking…
  • Grats to you on your weight loss! But all I can say is: Lord, do men have it easy
  • Uh none of that sounds at all healthy, I can't vouch for it's effectiveness. The best thing I've found for shedding water weight is 1) Drink a LOT of water and 2) eat very low sodium. When I do this it usually flushes enough out of my system that I can see a 2 lb drop overnight.
  • It's funny I don't know if it's a condition of my body shape or what but I was able to use the same clothes from about the halfway point all the way down. At my largest I couldn't really fit into much of the exercise gear available so I just worked out in loose sweat pants and a tee. Didn't need a super supportive sports…
  • All very interesting, thanks for sharing! Myth 1 Always eat breakfast - This, like #4 is one of those things that is just very individual. It's more about what makes you feel fuller (or less hungry). Do what works. Myth 2 Set moderate weight goals - Never really understood this one myself. I think realistic goals…
  • I'm part of the 97% sadly. I lose about 80 lbs in a bit over a year. I maintained for about another year. But I moved across country to be close to family and the new social activities, lack of exercise, and basic bad habits caused me to gain 30 over the course of a year. Nothing like yoyo dieting here. Just bad habits.…
  • Starvation mode is a poor name choice because among dieters it has come to mean a lot of things. In most applications of the term, it is a myth. However, temporary metabolic slowdown (which is what many mean when they short-hand "starvation mode") is completely real. Your metabolism can slow down when eating too little,…
  • This is such a hard question really. But I'll give my 2 cents. I think the best answer is a combination of NSV (non-scale victories), body measurements, and other people's opinions. DO NOT trust the scale or the mirror! Please! I myself was around 165 and thought I was still bloatedly fat, even though husband said I looked…
  • Advice from someone who only read the topic headline. As others say, I would keep with the walking. I started at 240 and walked for exercise until I was below 200. I did sort of have a program, in that each week I would try to increase my walking time by 5 minutes until I reached hour long walks. So for the first week I…
  • Same here. Anything below 140 on me would be way too thin, I think my ideal is around 150. CW is 190, I was at 165 and still felt I could lose another 10-15 lbs. So yea, still a lot more to go.
  • Yea sorry, it's easy to try and blame weight on something like hormones or medication, but truth is 99.99% of the time it's just your eating habits. I've been on the pill over 10 years, I struggled with my weight and still do but I know it has nothing to do with the pill. I do know I gain ~5lbs if I go on the pill (had a…
  • Sounds to me like you're actually doing alright if you lose BF% but stay the same weight. But if you want maybe try posting in this group and they can probably help give you some pointers (really great people): http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/10118-eat-train-progress
  • ^This. I think if you are offended by it then you either 1) can't take a complement or 2) really do have body image issues. As an anecdote, my sister has been losing weight as well, and she's petite (about 5'3) and weighs around 155. She thinks that's so high for her height and wants to lose like 15-20 more lbs at least.…
  • I'm the same - I started out only weighing once a week but as I get closer I like to weigh every day. I actually like to see the daily fluctuations. Sometimes makes me a little crazy but it's actually pretty consistent. For instance around TOM I usually go up 3-5 lbs. If I didn't weigh every day I might have taken that 1…
  • How have I never thought of making my own microwave burritos? Genius. Thanks.
  • Ironic considering the first story in the article is about a man in the UK who survived being stabbed 38 times. Having extra fat isn't necessarily a death sentence and I'm not even talking inside the scope of the article. There's tons of evidence that being "overweight" but also healthy and active can give you way more…
  • First I would ask how long it's been since you've taken a break? I usually find if I work out pretty intensely for 4-6 weeks I definitely start to get sluggish, more prone to illness, and generally just tired and hungry. By that time I know I need to take a week OFF. And that means no exercise, other than maybe some easy…
  • Doing a bunch of sprint/rest cycles actually counts as interval training. There is an exercise in MFP called "Interval Training" which is what I would probably log it under. For me it says 20 minutes of intervals (which is around the average to high end amount of time I would do) burns about 150 calories. No idea how…
  • To the OP, yes try adding about 100 calories a week to see how it goes. You likely WILL gain weight, but don't worry! For one thing, when you have been eating at an extreme deficit for a long period of time, your body has depleted its natural glycogen stores. This is why everyone tends to lose 5-10 lbs very fast when they…
