My mom had 2 slipped disks and 2 surgeries. She does all kinds of exercise. I have 2 herniated disks and I do all kinds of exercise as well. Try this... Give yourself 3 days. Eat only healthy proteins (plain chicken, fish, eggs), fruit, and vegetables. Make what you eat as clean as possible. This will allow your body to detoxify, getting the sugar out of your body. If you can get through the first 3 days, you should be able to do better. Good luck!

In some ways I agree with you. All calories are not created equal. However, never deny yourself something you enjoy, because you will end up over doing it later. Like others have said, definitely go to a running store where they can fit you in the right shoe. When I went in for the first time they put me on the treadmill and the shoes I was wearing were causing me pain. When I got new shoes they fit me in, it made my running very enjoyable. They really know what they are doing.
