  • Sounds like hypermobility syndrome to me, which seems to be synchronous with a lot of other problems including thyroid issues. I was diagnosed with hypermobility a few years ago, and although it's not something 'curable', it was a relief to get an explanation for all of my joint issues! Like others have mentioned, sugar is…
  • I grow veggies on 1/8th of an acre. Perfect hobby for anyone who loves food, but wants to be healthy and fit. Digging burns a heck of a lot of cals, and *nothing* tastes better than freshly pulled carrots, and peas fresh out of the pod
  • Nowhere near my goal yet, but spotted a 'fat me' picture earlier, and realised I've come a long way already! I'd already lost a bit before I started with MFP. So, first pic, SW around 96kg/211lbs. Second pic, CW 85kg/187lbs. Haven't been brave enough to take body pics yet, but I can see it in my face  Fat me by…
  • I don't know if cup sizes are the same in the UK as they are in the US, but I'm a UK 38J... The last time I lost weight, they went down to a G or F depending on the brand - all manufacturers don't appear to use the same sizing :grumble: Anyway, I use an elliptical and walking as my forms of exercise, and mostly manage…
  • Probably wasting my breath here, but, the reason fuel prices are steadily rising, is because it is a finite resource. Perhaps y'all should be campaigning for better public transport, rather than complaining about the fact that a really bad-for-the-environment way of extracting oil has been vetoed
  • I didn't know that, so thank you  Learning something new everyday on this site
  • I'm looking into it too. But as a start, I'm trying to get as much processed stuff out of my diet as possible. So I've more or less stopped eating bread and pasta, and processed sugar. I can really notice the effect if I DO eat it now, and it's not pleasant. Sluggish, narky, and acid indigestion for 24 hours.
  • Low fat sausages (our local butcher makes them, and they're fab!), home-made oven baked, thick-cut fries, sauteed mushrooms, and scrambled eggs. A slightly healthier version of a very naughty dinner! I've saved cals over the week to allow for it though :)
  • The compost tumblers are great, a friend has one and her compost is ready so much faster than mine. I have quite a few compost bins/heaps, all for different things. I have one outside my back door for kitchen waste, this is one of the 'dalek' shaped plastic ones, and I have 2, one inside the other, which helps to insulate…
  • Hi guys  I'm Sarah, I live in Yorkshire, in the UK. I've been growing my own food for nearly 6 years now, and learning all the old ways of preservation. Canning isn't a big thing here, so I had to import a canner from the US to be able to that, and I just love it! There's nothing like having your pantry and freezer…
  • Sounds familiar! I have had these problems with knees and ankles, and my back, since early teens but didn't get a diagnosis til I was in my early 30s! It is a hereditary condition and 2 of my 3 sisters also now have a diagnosis. It's looking like all 3 of my kids have it too. One good thing is that it provides an…
  • Sounds to me like you are all hypermobile. Classic signs of it. Check out www.hypermobility.org (a UK based information website) or have a Google. The best things you can do to help yourself are low impact exercise to strengthen muscles, swimming is great if you can do it, stationary cycling is good for knees and ankles…
  • No, your target is already set at a 'deficit', ie less than the standard calorie intake for an adult. This is calculated when you fill in your weight etc and your usual amount of daily activity. If you go much below the stated target, your body will stop burning and go into 'storage' or 'starvation' mode.
  • I right-clicked and selected 'Open in New Tab'. You're looking fabulous, well-done :D
  • Lots of useful information is available on the about.com thyroid pages. http://thyroid.about.com/cs/hypothyroidism/a/hashivshypo.htm And a sensible explanation of why you should be taking your meds... : http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroiddrugstreatments/a/refusingmeds.htm
  • I've only been diagnosed with a problem for about 5 months, but I've been slowly gaining weight for about 12 months. I don't think my dose of thyroxine is high enough, but now I'm in the 'normal' range, they're reluctant to raise the dose much more. I really struggle with carbs because when I have the tired days, my body…
  • Hi there :) I don't have PCOS, but that would be impossible as I had a full hysterectomy about 8 years ago ;) I do however have the thyroid thing, the Fibro thing, hypermobility syndrome, back problems, costochondritis... I'll stop now, I think ;) So yeah, it's tough trying to lose weight, but at the same time, you know…
  • http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v104/n1/full/6605993a.html "Conclusion: Our results support the view that salt intake is an important dietary risk factor for gastric cancer [...]"
  • An excess of salt is also linked with stomach cancer, if you use it in excess over a long period of time. However, I do think the OP is correct in that people do get overly hung up on the issue. If you have high blood pressure and have been advised to cut down on salt, fair enough, but otherwise, I think that like…
  • I bought 2 recently, and they were just the same - far too tight. Mine are a 36H which is what I usually buy. Instead of faffing around sending them back, and waiting for a 38H to arrive, I ordered a pack of 'Bra Extenders' which are an extra set of hook & eyes on a piece of fabric. I figured this way, I can use the bras…
  • I took a 24 hour free trial on another 'diet resource' website, and used it to find out calories used in lots of different activities. The ones that amazed me the most were the gardening ones. For instance, digging apparently burns 554 calories an hour!
