  • i thought i knew the basics too. then I read Nourishing Traditions. Flipped me on my head regarding nutrition and now i'll never go back.
  • i have his Encyclopedia of Natural Medicines or something like that and it's one of my "go to" books.
  • Nourishing Traditions is a life changer. A must read for every person interested in eating healthier.
  • sounds like you may need to read Nourishing Traditions or the GAPS Diet.
  • I also love NT, but I'm really new to it. I tried making the buttermilk biscuits in the NT book and turned out to be hockey pucks. I'm next going to try making kefir. I've already got some kefir grains coming in the mail. :-)
  • SOUR KRAUT!!!! OH THE SMELL . . . BLLLEEECCCHHH
  • My understanding is that a healthy person is supposed to take their body weight and divide by two, then subtract 10 for the grams of protein to eat each day. (not for body builders or those who are trying to bulk up). So, my weight is currently 180, so I would need to half that (90), then subtract 10 (80). so i aim for 80…
  • lentils are a great source of protein (cooks in about 20 min), as is barley (cooks like rice), and buckwheat pasta.
  • Honestly, i cut out all sugar, including hidden sugar in foods, and cut out all caffiene. I've stopped having afternoon crashes. i feel "level" all day long. Besides losing 24 lbs along with the change in diet. My husband noticed, so he cut out all sugar and caffiene and he's leveled out too. and he was a 2 or 3 Mt Dew's…
  • The barley has a very potatoe-y feel in this stew. Even my vegetable-hating husband loves this stew. 1 cup chopped carrots 1 cup chopped bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped celery 4 cups beef broth 1 cup no sugar added Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce 1 14 oz can Red Gold petite chopped tomatoes 2/3 cup pearled barley 1.5…
  • Per Wikipedia: No evidence for stevia constituents causing cancer or birth defects has been found.[50][51] Other studies have shown stevia to improve insulin sensitivity in rats,[52] and possibly even to promote additional insulin production,[53] helping to reverse diabetes and metabolic syndrome.[54] Preliminary human…
  • you don't have to add any liquid?
  • 1 cup chopped carrots 1 cup chopped bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped celery 4 cups beef broth 1 cup no sugar added Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce 1 14 oz can Red Gold petite chopped tomatoes 2/3 cup pearled barley 1.5 teaspoons dried basil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 lbs chuck roast, trimmed of all visible…
  • I figured it out! Thanks for having me go back and check. I had added the wrong type of roast. I changed it to chuck roast shoulder, which is what i used, and the protein is now 56 grams per serving. Thanks again!
  • MFP shows 54 grams protein for the entire recipe, and I entered it as serving 6. I double checked the barley amount and the roast amount, they both look correct. MFP showed 20 grams protein each for the barley and roast (for the entire recipe).
  • i'll definitely check if i entered it correctly.
  • Pearled Barley is in the dried beans/rice section of my grocery store. It's barley with the hulls removed, but still very nutritious. It is smaller than white rice when dry but swells to about the size of a corn kernel when cooked. When I put the recipe into MFP, the protein of 2/3 cup of barley *equaled* the protein of…
  • the Barley has a potatoe-y feel in your mouth and adds lots of protein. But I'm sure potatoes would be delish in here as well!
  • i use Truvia and Stevia in the Raw. i put it in greek unsweetened yogurt and in my tea. it tastes so good and it's good for you. From Wikipedia: No evidence for stevia constituents causing cancer or birth defects has been found.[50][51] Other studies have shown stevia to improve insulin sensitivity in rats,[52] and…
