  • I would eat grilled cheese for every meal every day if I could. But I try to limit myself to once a week. It has been my favorite food for about 15 years.
  • @amunet07 I do what @janer4jc said-- press plastic wrap across the top of the food before putting the lid on. And I try to eat everything within 2 weeks. This seems to avoid freezer burn. I also keep my freezer very empty (pretty much all I keep in it is an ice cube tray and some tupperwares, if I have frozen leftovers),…
  • Yes! I freeze pretty much leftover everything, since I live alone but like making big crock pot meals. I freeze everything in pre-portioned, microwave-safe containers so that it's easy to grab-and-go in the AM when I head out for work.
  • I highly recommend this. I used to take coffee with milk, but started buying high-quality, fresh-roasted beans and grinding them myself (which takes like 30 extra seconds)-- and wow, the taste of the coffee without anything added is so rich and phenomenal that my need for milk in it disappeared. I also drink less coffee…
  • I always make carnitas in the crock pot with pork shoulder or pork loin. SO easy, and a 2 pound cut usually gives me 6-7 big servings.
  • I've started buying at individual shops-- fruits and veggies from the produce stand, meat from the butcher, cheese from the cheese shop, etc. I find that this cuts down on a lot of "ooo I want that!" impulse purchases I'd normally make at the supermarket, because now I usually go out with a specific product in mind (and…
  • I love hiking, too! Living in NYC, I don't get the hiking solitude that I like, but I looove taking long hikes in upstate NY on the weekends :]
  • Baked banana-pumpkin oatmeal. Nice and warm and comforting when it's freezing outside!
  • I have an Omega J8004 that I love. I don't use juice as any sort of cleanse or meal replacement-- I just really love fresh juice with breakfast and making ice pops with juice in the summer. I've been using it regularly for over a year now and have never had any issues with it. I have put pretty much every type of fruit and…
  • I definitely eat less in order to drink more-- I'm skipping lunch today in order to have some beers tonight! The tradeoff is worth it for me. Something a lot of bars will do (if you ask, because sometimes it isn't on the menu) is pour you a half pint. I do this often because mentally, this somehow makes me drink less…
  • In addition to the snacks you keep, you definitely will also need meals sometimes! Most university dining halls have healthy options, if you ask around for them. I actually lost like 15 pounds my first semester of college because I was obsessed with the salad bar, and they had take-out containers if you asked for them-- so…
  • I agree with many people that Netflix is a good way to kill time on cardio machines. But my thing is listening to podcasts when I work out-- I feel that they are often a little more thought-provoking than most television shows, and it's much easier to just leave my headphones on when going between cardio and strength…
  • The other day I walked past two rather portly men who were standing around on the sidewalk eating one of these right out of the box, and making fun of the people visible through the big windows of the kickboxing gym next door. I wish I had made any part of that story up-- but it kept me laughing the whole way home.…
  • I absolutely don't track calories when on vacation, especially when I'm in another food culture-- most of the fun of vacation (at least for me) is eating and drinking as much as possible! Paris is such a perfect walking city, so hopefully that'll help you mentally offset some of the calories you'll be consuming :) My…
  • Congrats! That's a really good one :) My goal is also to be at a comfortable 12 minute mile before summer starts! I feel like I can go on forever at about 13.5 min/mile (4.5 mph), but never seem to get faster, so that's what I am working on now. Good luck!!
  • SO MUCH THIS. I love throwing 90s rap onto my running playlists. I'm more of a podcast listener while I work out-- I feel like I am learning something while also being entertained!
  • I'd say eat your normal breakfast, and maybe have a tiny snack a half hour or hour beforehand-- or just wait until you're done to eat lunch (1:30 isn't that late for lunch). When I'm nervous, food sits weird with me, so I just avoid it until the stressful situation is over. I had an evening interview recently that went for…
  • Did a 5 mile run today (albeit slowly, I've always been a slooooow runner)-- longest run I've done since 2012, I think!
  • Thanks everyone for your help and advice! I'm excited to get out there as soon as the snow clears. There is a great bike/running path close to me that wouldn't involve too much road riding-- I'll get comfortable there before I venture out into more traffic. And arditarose, your post had me cracking up because last time I…
  • I like Gaiam yoga DVDs-- you can get some for super cheap eBay or Amazon. I have a few that I purchased like 5-8 years ago, and still use them when I'm unable/unwilling (like during yesterday's snow storm in NY!) to leave my apartment for a workout!
  • This was very much a matter of "hmm what's in my fridge" since I didn't have a chance to go food shopping before the storm hit!! I mixed 180g carrots (chopped in food processor), 1 egg, about 15g flour, 1 clove garlic, and some salt/pepper/parsley/smoked paprika. I cooked them in a little butter for about 4 minutes each…
  • Snow day from work! Carrot fritters with Greek yogurt. Plus an apple and some cheese. Yum.
  • I'm going on a week-long vacation soon. I fully plan on eating and drinking whatever I please. It's one week of my year that's meant specifically for relaxation and pure enjoyment-- and to me, that means not worrying about what I'm eating. It doesn't mean I'll purposely binge because I'm on vacation, but if I want a giant…
  • I do both. Mostly it depends on whether or not I'm already wearing my sneakers. I HAVE to do 30DS on a yoga mat, regardless of whether or not I'm wearing shoes or on carpet or hard floor-- and this does help with traction if I'm not wearing anything on my feet. Overall, I advocate for shoes most of the time, but sometimes…
  • Since I stopped eating gluten (due to the awful effects it has on my poor tummy), avoiding things in the break room is really easy! I also recently started a job where I only have one coworker, thus there are no massive trays of donuts or bagels or cookies. We go out for lunch once a week and I usually get something…
  • Go downtown and wander until you find a place that looks good. There are so many great restaurants in East/West/Greenwich Village, anywhere near Astor Place (it's a stop on the 6 train), Park Slope (if you're traveling to Brooklyn, plus Prospect Park is gorgeous), and even Midtown East has some good places to eat (though I…
  • I live in NYC too. Everything you could ever want is here, so you don't have to worry to much about not being able to find anything. Depends on the neighborhood too, though. Either way, you'll love it and find that eating healthy is both very easy (because there is so much that is easily accessible) and very difficult…
  • I could've written the same thing. It took years for me to figure this out (because I was having these problems before "gluten free" became a 'thing'), and it was through no help of any doctor. Once I self-diagnosed (because professional diagnoses were not helpful) and stopped eating gluten, all these symptoms cleared up…
  • I'd eat everything, because Moroccan is just about my favorite type of food in the world. But tagines often are pretty healthy-- they have lots of yummy stuff and don't necessarily require couscous (though I like putting a few tablespoons of couscous in the leftover tagine broth). It's mostly meat, veggies, and often…
  • When I started taking it, within a few weeks I stopped being to tired all the time. Prior to finding out my disastrous blood work results, I was getting home from school or work and falling asleep by 5PM every night-- and sleeping through the night! And my moods and motivation greatly improved. Because I felt better…
