  • When I was heavy, I thought I was fine. And I was, mentally. But after I lost the weight, I could do so much more than I could before. Fun things. I decided I really liked being lighter. Ten years later, I'm back up a bit again (up 40, but still down 80). I'm still able to do the things I could when I was lighter, but not…
  • The biggest benefit to me in logging food was it forcing me to see how many calories each food contains. I found that some food I liked just wasn't worth the calories. I wanted to "spend" my calories on something I liked better. I still eat some "junk" food (or candy), but only the kinds I really enjoy (keeping in mind…
  • I have heard that some cancers can only metabolize carbohydrates (or sugars), and treatments that include a no-carb/low-carb diet have been studied for their effect on cancer. I agree with Sand_Tiger that it could be true for some bacteria as well. After all, metabolizing fat takes more metabolic machinery than sugar, and…
  • This is a general warning. I have a question. If someone posts something considered to be in violation of the guidelines, are the penalties just summarily applied, or does someone from MyFitnessPal say specifically what violation was made and why, allowing a person to correct themselves?
  • I agree that much of the literature is like this, but I have read a number of those studies, and they all have flaws of one kind or another. Most are too short, don't pay attention to what people are eating when the are eating, or they have a very small sample size. Can you name the studies that showed very few study…
  • I found this to be true... It will let you do a 24 hour fast that way, but then it won't let you start another fast at the same time the last one ended, and if you enter a fast that is 23 hours and 59 minutes long, myfitnesspal counts it as 23 hours. Of course, my body doesn't care what myfitnesspal says. I'm doing an…
  • I agree. It has encouraged me to up my game in the abs department. I do 5x5 weightlifting, and have a beautiful 6-pack under a few inches of fat. I just have to drop my body fat percentage to show off. Easier said than done, and at 60 years old, harder than I want it to be, but I think I can do it. We'll see.
  • I'm on day 4 of an extended fast. My fast is water only plus an occasional non-calorie electrolyte tab. I have done a number of 10-day fasts, but I decided to change it up this time. I'm not fasting for a specific amount of time... I'm fasting until I reach a goal weight. My goal is to lose 40 pounds. When I started on…
  • My favorite myth is the Fasting=Starving. Starving exists. Starvation mode doesn't. As Dr. Jason Fung points out: Fasting is like running because you are doing a 5K. Starving is like running because the lion is chasing you. Not the same.
  • I have to echo recommendations in previous posts about the work by Dr. Jason Fung. He's excellent. I've been doing IF this week, but I have to say I really prefer extended fasting. Every time I eat, it seems to reset my body to expect food, and then I have to be hungry when I'm not eating. When I do extended fasting, after…
  • Is it OK for an otherwise healthy, overweight adult to do an extended fast (water and electrolytes only)? [Otherwise healthy: BMI 25-30, not taking any medications, not pregnant or breastfeeding]
  • I have two pictures of my progress chart. Portrait and landscape. Portrait shows better how much weight I lost at first. Landscape shows better how long I've been working on it, and my bobbles between when I started and now. (I'm approaching my 10 year anniversary of when I started my weight-loss journey in April.)
  • I'm not the OP, but I lost 120 lbs over the course of a year and a half 7-8 years ago. I had quite a bit of loose skin. I thought about plastic surgery, but decided to give it some time. Partly, because I was afraid I might regain the weight. Partly, because of the expense. Partly, because of the fact that plastic surgery…
  • Yeah. The twentypullups.com program makes me dream that it could be possible. I'm starting on Monday at week -2. On a bicycle, I can ride 630 miles in 3 days, no sweat. One pull up? Impossible!
  • I'm a cyclist. That means my legs are good, but my upper body is weak. Core is OK. I've just started weightlifting for the winter season, but the weight is still (empty bar) light. I think I'm going to add pull ups as a supplement to my weight training. I'm sure I will have to start with negative pull ups.... [-something…
  • I'm not an Aussie, but I love 'em. My wife's grandmother and great uncle emigrated to the US from NSW. I got to visit Melbourne for work a year ago. I traveled there with two colleagues for two weeks. On the weekend in between, they visited the casino and museums in Melbourne. What did I do? I hired a push bike and rode…
  • There is a huge difference between eating less than 1000 calories a day and eating nothing. Fasting is a perfectly normal thing for a body to deal with. Eating, but with a super-restricted calorie intake, is much more dangerous.
  • The answer for me is: the higher calorie count is always more correct. Unless it is exercise, then the lower calorie count is the right one. <grin>
  • I'm a 54 year-old who started 5 years ago at 300+, got down to 175, and am now back up to 203. I'm looking to get back to the 180 range. (Going on a cruise just before winter sets in doesn't help for weight maintenance.) I do cycling as my main cardio, and I do Stronglifts 5x5 for strength. That program starts with very…
  • I have two things to add: First, women's bikes "tend" to fit women better, but that isn't universally true. My wife has a "men's" bike and loves it. Definitely check out both men's and women's bikes. I'm a guy, but I'd buy a women's bike if it fit me better. Seats are like that too. I have a men's frame bike, but I have…
  • I eat a mostly fruit and vegetable diet myself, but I'm not a vegetarian. I'm OK with Vegans as long as they admit it is not a natural human diet. I do have an axe to grind about vegans who think they are better than others because of their diet. It's just not true. Humans are natural omnivores. I can go days without…
  • I agree that calorie burns are estimates no matter how you measure them. As I've lost weight, movement is easier, and therefore burns fewer calories. I think this effect is stronger than the one MFP builds into its calorie-burn estimates. On the other hand, as I've lost weight and lifted weights, I've become more active…
  • I signed up for the annual Premium version of MFP; it cost me about $50. I figured it was worth it, because MFP helped me lose 106 pounds so far (I want to lose a few more pounds, but my wife tells me I'm there already.) I've logged every day for more than 1100 days, so I'm definitely already on board with MFP. It's way…
  • I usually weigh, measuring in grams. If I don't have a scale handy, I will guesstimate. If guesstimation works for you, that's fine, but if you find that you aren't getting the results you expect, I suggest guesstimation followed by actual measuring for a while to verify the accuracy of your guesstimation. My guesstimation…
  • I am interested in what people might have to say about this as well.
  • I like just about anything on Youtube by FlatRater2010.
