I'm suspicious of this "Glute activation" fad
"Your glutes need activating": Fad or fact? It just seems somehow like a typical fad the fitness industry pushes on us to make us feel bad about ourselves and spend more money on gyms, coaching, equipment etc. You don't need to feel muscles to know they're working. Surely if you're not using your glutes, you'll fall over?…

The Psychology of Endurance
I'm doing an online course from the University of Kent called, "The Science of Endurance Training and Performance". In Week 3, we look at the "Psychological determinants of endurance performance" and we have an exercise where we look at critical situations we might come across. We then create a plan for each situation so…

"Accountability Buddies" - Do they work?
We see an endless stream of people asking for an "Accountability Buddy". I'd never heard of this term till I joined MFP in April 2015. I've been on these forums ever since I joined, but I've never seen anyone credit their buddy with being the number one help in reaching their weight loss goal. Where do people get the idea…

Bloat (this makes me laugh)
 To be serious as well, here's the best bloat post ever, by @AnnPT77 : And my 2 cents: if the bloating is none of these, are you sure you're not just sticking your stomach out and/or comparing yourself to athletes in peak condition with optimal lighting?

Xmas water weight gain and drop - Give us your data!
Weight goes up; weight comes down. I'd banked calories with extra exercise this week, so I enjoyed myself on Chrimbo day here in Australia. Logged guesstimates, and was maybe 500 calories / 2000 kilojoules over my daily maintenance limit. My scale weight rose 3 lbs / 1.4 kg on Boxing Day morning. Not to panic!... It fell…

"Motivation is like a unicorn"
An email from the awesome Aadam of Physiqonomics "Today I sat for three hours staring at the blank screen of my Google Docs page. By the end of those three excruciating hours, which, I should add felt like having the flesh torn off my limbs by man-eating penguins, I'd written a jaw-dropping 100 words. (I'd say that was…

Post-run fuel
If I have carbs and protein 45 minutes before an hour-long run, do I really need carbs and protein straight after I finish the run like the media say? (Note: I'm in maintenance and hit my calorie & macro goals for the day.)

"When Food Guilt is Ruining Your Life"
http://www.melissatoler.com/blog/food-guilt-is-running-your-life Some excerpts: "Women feel the need to confess and atone because we've been taught that eating certain foods or eating too much is sinful. You're a naughty girl if you eat from the list of forbidden foods. The belief that you should strive for dietary…

Is there good evidence highly active people need magnesium supplementation?
I've got some magnesium tablets you dissolve in water that are promoted as "good for muscles and nerves". Well, so is protein and oxygen. I looked a while ago online and couldn't find any high quality meta-studies that supported this claim. Have you seen any?

Garmin calories low recently
Anyone else recently getting stupidly low calorie burns for exercise from Garmin lately? I did a 30 km run on Friday - 1000 calories. I usually get more than that for a half marathon (21.1km). Today I did 10 km and only got 225 calories. I don't need to lose any weight, thanks Garmin! Gimme my calories!

11 months weightloss then 11 months maintenance/recomp (with pics)
This is what 695 days of logging all foods daily in MFP has done: I lost 80lbs from April 2015 to April 2016, and have maintained my goal weight range since then. My goal weight range is 62-64 kg, and I've stayed at my calorie limit the whole time. I believe I've gained around 1 kg of muscle, as I was in the lower half of…
