Things I didn't need to eat to lose weight

I lost 80 lbs in 12 months and have kept it off for 13 months so far, and I've never once had:

Apple cider vinegar
Green smoothie
Protein shake
Green tea
Diet pills
Kale
Goji berries
Acai berries
Kombucha
Chia seeds
Coconut oil

I just ate what I wanted within my calorie limit.

Of course, if I ever decided to eat those things, I'd eat them, but I'd still need to eat less calories than I burned.

There is no magic weight loss potion. If there was, Oprah wouldn't be fat.

I've never had kale or quinoa and i don't eat salad. I prefer cooked thick veggies. I don't really eat whole grain bread, either, unless it's the only bread there. I just eat white bread moderately.

1/2 of this list just sounds delicious, lol. I think the only things I don't at least occasionally consume are ACV, diet pills, and acai/goji berries

I love making pie and I will be making this Sunday for Mother's Day. Another use for ACV.

I actually had the same thought. Apple cider vinegar (not just vinegar pie, btw) is an excellent thing to put into a butter crust to make it flakier; so I use it pretty regularly.

I also bake with coconut oil as an alternative to vegetable oil, as I'm allergic to soy. A 1/2-butter, 1/2-coconut oil mixture makes excellent cookies.

As to the OP: great list! I agree 100% I did (as mentioned above) consume 2 of the items, but I think they actually contributed to slowing my weight loss, given I used them solely in delicious baked goods. However, they supported my mental health.. so there is that..

I've worked out the exact same thing, you just need to eat in a sustained caloric deficit to lose weight. And there is no magic food, potion or pill that will do that for you.

    "Clean" unprocessed foods.

I didn't have to eat turkey bacon, egg whites, and low fat butter with breakfast. I can have real bacon, fresh cracked eggs, and real butter. Makes me so much happier in the morning.

I actually have to do that to stay in deficit.

There's nothing magic in what you do or don't eat while in a calorie deficit because the magic happens in your head when you write down your food intake. ( I says while nibbling on homemade yogurt mixed with PB2, super berries, and high protein granola.)

Nice list although a couple of those I have added to my diet and enjoyed. Kale mainly but I have had bars with chia seeds and goji berries added. I have however stayed clear of brussels sprouts and lentils.

And I don't have enough kefir just yet to make a green smoothie with my kale.

Hmm. I will have to try that next time there's a pie making reason.

To play devil's advocate for a moment here... what I really want to eat is potato chips. The amount I need to eat for a snack right now is 50 calories, which is exactly 5 chips. You and I may be different, but I would go berserk eating five chips. I would rather eat something less calorie dense in a larger portion.

Also I really like kale. ;)

I like kale too. And I rarely eat potato chips (I'm low carbing now, but even before I rarely did, because I'm picky about them). The place that makes the chips I like most (housemade, comes with a sandwich if you choose them instead of almonds) gives them out in servings of 150 cals, which will fit in a day (well, not with my current macros) easily enough if you want them to.

But I actually could be perfectly happy with just a few (even 50 cal) chips as a side, if I didn't tend to want to eat everything in front of me, LOL. Less calorie dense in a larger portion doesn't play into it, since I don't eat chips alone, but with some kind of protein and vegetables. So the whole plate is filling even if the chips on their own would be.

It's exactly how I fit in things like bacon and cheese. (Unlike chips, cheese really is a weakness of mine, and I would not give it up, and I don't go berserk eating just small amounts. Same with a square of good chocolate.)

I'm not saying you should eat chips but just pushing against the all or nothing idea -- you aren't only eating whatever it is, so that it is not that filling on its own might not matter so much.

I guess this mindset kind of works for me too. I think it depends more on whether it's a breakfast or lunch, or nearing my last meal of the day. Earlier in the day, I'm still thinking about making room for a treat later, or wondering where I will end up for dinner if I'm socializing, if I'll want to save room for a drink, etc. Then those 100 calories really come into play. They can make or break my evening.

If it's my last meal of the day...take 'em if you got 'em.

I had to have coconut oil. It tastes so good when mixed with chocolate, peanut butter and rice krispies. It even helped me lose weight because I ate it within my calorie goal.
