Things I didn't need to eat to lose weight

I lost 80 lbs in 12 months and have kept it off for 13 months so far, and I've never once had:
Apple cider vinegar
Green smoothie
Protein shake
Green tea
Diet pills
Kale
Goji berries
Acai berries
Kombucha
Chia seeds
Coconut oil
I just ate what I wanted within my calorie limit.
Of course, if I ever decided to eat those things, I'd eat them, but I'd still need to eat less calories than I burned.
There is no magic weight loss potion. If there was, Oprah wouldn't be fat.

About the only thing I needed to swallow was my pride, and admit that my size was under my control.56

This is great! I've had some of those things, but more because I wanted too...and the ACV, well a friend and I drank it for 40 days as a Lenten penance once5

You mean I've been choking down my diet pills with a green smoothie made with kale, acai, goji, Chia, coconut oil, protein powder and ACV for no reason?
Dammit.31 -

Ah, you've been doing it all wrong!! You need to first crush the diet pills, and then blend them into the smoothie!!! This is the only way to really detox!!!!!!!!!!!
And you must must MUST finish everything you eat by 6pm or your car will turn into a pumpkin or something28 -
I like protein smoothies. Never once thought they'd make me lose weight (calorie bombs!) but I enjoy one on a hot day after a bike ride.10

But at least then I could eat the pumpkin. But would the carbs after 6 make me fat?8 -
I've never had kale or quinoa and i don't eat salad. I prefer cooked thick veggies. I don't really eat whole grain bread, either, unless it's the only bread there. I just eat white bread moderately.1

It's great with pulled pork and some collards cooked with bacon.7 -
I love making pie and I will be making this Sunday for Mother's Day. Another use for ACV.

1/2 of this list just sounds delicious, lol. I think the only things I don't at least occasionally consume are ACV, diet pills, and acai/goji berries2

I had a chocolate-covered acai berry today. It was delicious!
OP, congratulations on your results - and thank you for sharing this list, I hope it'll be useful to some of the folks just starting out!6 -
Did you run fasted on a morning after not eating after 6pm?
Did you drink your body weight in water daily?
Did you eat 10 small meals a day?
And you couldn't possibly of enjoyed a beer or some bread could you,?12 -
To play devil's advocate for a moment here... what I really want to eat is potato chips. The amount I need to eat for a snack right now is 50 calories, which is exactly 5 chips. You and I may be different, but I would go berserk eating five chips. I would rather eat something less calorie dense in a larger portion.
Also I really like kale.6 -

I actually had the same thought. Apple cider vinegar (not just vinegar pie, btw) is an excellent thing to put into a butter crust to make it flakier; so I use it pretty regularly.
I also bake with coconut oil as an alternative to vegetable oil, as I'm allergic to soy. A 1/2-butter, 1/2-coconut oil mixture makes excellent cookies.
As to the OP: great list! I agree 100% I did (as mentioned above) consume 2 of the items, but I think they actually contributed to slowing my weight loss, given I used them solely in delicious baked goods. However, they supported my mental health.. so there is that..3 -
Oh, I also didn't eat Garcinia Cambogia.11

Sad thing is, I've tried most of those in the belief that they would actually help. My wallet got to be nice and slim and my liver ended up on the iffy side of things from the diet pills. Losing weight at a sensible deficit caused both my wallet and my liver to start on the way to recovery.
But I have to say... I actually like Kale and ACV (just not as a drink, that's nasty )
(PS: you forgot detox teas on your list. You know... the ones with laxatives and diuretics...)6 -
I didn't have to eat turkey bacon, egg whites, and low fat butter with breakfast. I can have real bacon, fresh cracked eggs, and real butter. Makes me so much happier in the morning.9
-
I've worked out the exact same thing, you just need to eat in a sustained caloric deficit to lose weight. And there is no magic food, potion or pill that will do that for you.1
