Riddle for Diabetic, LC, Italian Opera Fans (Dr. Bernstein shenanigans)
Here's one for the Opera Quiz. Dr. Bernstein's discussion on the side effects of the various oral diabetes meds took a humorous, operatic turn when he turned his attention to the so-called starch blockers, such as acarbose. Straight out of Italian opera.... Anyone? (No Googling.) Discussion starts around 3:15:…

T2Ds - A1c tests and hemoglobin variants
Someone trying to nail down her blood glucose levels asked how often to check her BG and what could throw off HbA1c tests. T2Ds - Anxiety & high BG, and a simple fix
Dr. Bernstein on performance-related anxiety and the spike in BG it produces. Since the effects are caused by a surge of epinephrine, he figured a drug that blocks the effects of epinephrine might be effective in maintaining low BG. Bingo! He recommends treating preventitively with propranolol (Inderal), a beta-blocker…

Diabetics - insurance covered blood ketone testing!
Very quietly, my insurance co (BCBS) started covering diabetes monitoring and education expenses. This appears to be a "you have to ask" scenario, as nowhere in my skimpy plan documents is there mention of such benefits. After many rounds of correspondence with my endocrinologist's office and BCBS, it finally stated, in…

I know, seems like dumb question from a ketophile..... My spousal unit is slowly reducing her carb consumption (3 cheers).
