Bike maintenance 😔
I went out for a long lunch ride, but my watch told me to change the batteries in my pedals. It's been telling me for days, I can only ignore it for so long or in back to using heart rate. 😳 And: if it's not on Strava it didn't happen. After finding the right ones and getting them in, I went back out and ran over some…

North Mountain (pics)
A good friend and I skied an under appreciated gem last weekend. We drove as far as we could without getting stuck, and started up the mountain. Conditions were marginal but got better quickly and we wound up having lots of fun. More smiles than usual in our pictures of each other. 🙂 Being outdoors with good company and…

Cycling with a Garmin watch
This wasn't possible the last time I checked, but that was a while ago. Before I go digging into it maybe somebody knows off the top of their head. Is it possible to get a Garmin watch to upload an activity as road cycling instead of just cycling? I know the Edge units can do it, maybe it's buried in the menu somewhere? I…

Anybody in here use Gaia GPS and Garmin?
Back story: we got a huge snow storm and I lost my phone skiing downtown. I had to get another one because I need it to work. On my old phone, in the Gaia app I could tap "Export" when I'm looking at a planned route, select gpx format, and Garmin Connect would pop up asking what kind of route I'd like to save. When I try…

Goal: 3,500,000 steps in 2021
That works out to about 5 miles a day on average, or a little under 10,000 per day. I like hiking, so those long and joyful days will buy me some slack, let me take it easy other days. I've got a lot of fitness goals for 2021, I think this is the easiest to relate to. Anyone else have a step goal for the new year?

What fitness items did Santa bring you? 🎅
I got a pair of backcountry skis, can't wait to go get my heart rate up on them. I also get more daylight, about two minutes a day, so I can look forward to spending more time on the trails. What did you get? 🎄

What were your favorite (exercise related) moments of 2020?
There's been a lot wrong with 2020. Really a lot. But we all made it. This is a time for reflection, and there's room for positivity. Tell us about things you've enjoyed this past year. Did you get a PR that meant a lot to you? Try a new sport and realized you love it? Do a hike that's been on your list forever? Share your…

Where is steps per year in Garmin?
I'm wondering how many I did in 2020, and can't find it in the app or website. Does anybody in here know?

2021 Calendar
I've been making my own calendar for a few years now. It gives me an excuse to reflect on the year that's gone by, to remember some of my favorite hikes, and it gives me something to do on cold, rainy November evenings. You should make one if you haven't already. A few of my friends make their own calendars too, it…

34 is the new 17
Last month Jonathan Shubert rode a bike 100 miles in 2:57. 🤯 On his 34th birthday. The previous record had stood for most of his life. Anyway, I found that impressive. There are a lot of people doing incredible things throughout their lives.

Uphill skiing is hard work (unless you ask my Garmin)
Garmin has been in the estimated running power market for a couple years now, and they've started to do cross country ski power too. It uses a bunch of sensors (accelerometers and compass at the chest and wrist, gyro on the chest, baro, and gps) and an algorithm. There's basically no documentation. Naturally I'm curious…

I got to ski today! 😁
My good friend Mary and I drove a scenic byway to a mountain pass, and then I skied and she snowshoed out to a historic ghost town. It was a great time. 🙂 There was almost enough snow. I'm king of all I survey! Actually I'm wondering how the *kitten* we cross this river. The sketchy way. Of course. The scenery wasn't bad.…

Don't get separated when hiking
This probably doesn't apply in city parks, but if there's any doubt stick together and if that doesn't happen it's a problem immediately, don't just hope to meet back up at the car or anything. Bring more gear then you think you need, too. A snowshoer got lost in a winter storm last week on Mount Rainier. He had come in…

If you wear down to stay warm...
Throw it in the dryer (by itself) on medium heat for an hour. It'll come out warmer. 🙂 Down compresses very well and springs back well too. After a lot of cycles of that, it doesn't loft to its full potential. The dryer and mild heat bring it back up to its full potential. You don't need tennis balls unless it's wet. It'll…

How to track all miles on a pair of shoes?
I'm hoping there's an easy way that I'm not thinking of. I'm getting over a slow healing foot injury. There's a particular shoe that helps me a lot. Other shoes give me a long lasting dull ache, these do too if I let them wear out. It takes a few days to notice and it takes a few days to go away after I realize and fix it.…

Table Mountain - fall color hiking pics
I spent yesterday hiking, a storm is filling the mountains with snow right now, sometimes you have to get while the getting is good. 🌞 🌨️🌨️🌨️ Table Mountain burned 8 years ago. Pretty extensively, for miles in every direction it's nothing but giant toothpicks; here and there a stand of the trees I came for, the only ones…

Peleton recall
FYI. Problem doesn't seem common, but potentially high consequence. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/16/business/peloton-pedal-recall.html Out of curiosity, does anyone know what pedals they come with? Did Peleton roll their own? Can their customers send the pedals back, keep the bike, and use pedals of their choosing?

PSA: 50% off at Eddie Bauer
Apologies for the spam, I hope this benefits somebody. The seasons are changing, it's getting colder here. Few things: 1 - They make it sound like everything is on sale, that isn't the case. 2 - If you want something that isn't on sale, ask customer service to double check, and they'll give you 20% off. 😁 3 - Don't ever…

Fall color: Easy Pass larch march (pics)
Larches have needles and cones, you'd think they were evergreens, they look just like any other pine. But they tolerate extreme cold by dropping their needles in the fall (October) and growing new ones in the spring (June). Before the trees go bare, they turn a brilliant shade of gold, it's magical when the sun hits just…

Hikers: what do you look for in a day pack?
I finally wore my pack out after 6 or 7 years of abuse. I tried a few before I found one I was happy using, and it kind of surprised me what I wound up with. After going through this exercise I'm curious what other people consider essential in a pack, and which of those features are negotiable? In my case, I just couldn't…

Sunset walk (pics)
I knew it would be dramatic, the sun has been golden red all day. So I brought my camera on an evening walk. I know nobody will believe me, but that's not a Photoshop trick. The smoke (from the California fires) must be settling into horizontal layers. I used a 300 mm lens to embiggen it.

Sunrise in Seattle (2 pics)
This is pretty much what the entire West Coast looks like. Stay safe folks.

Fire and Ice
Last weekend my good friend Mary and I hiked together on Mount Baker. This was my third time up the Railroad Grade trail, but my first time as a day hike; it was her first time up there. It instantly became one of her favorite trails. We arrived Sunday morning when most people were leaving. Our trail begins in the woods,…

Think solar powered Garmins are high tech? Think again.
Dragon eggs can help scientists study violent natural processes in unprecedented detail, but for Tom Scott, a materials scientist at Bristol, volcanoes were just the beginning. For the past few years, Scott and a small group of collaborators have been developing a souped-up version of the dragon egg’s nuclear battery that…

Road tubeless: Sealant keeps gunking my valve cores
I can't get any air in (without a compressor), as soon as I put the pump on the valve sealant comes out everywhere and makes a big mess. Anybody else experience this? Any idea what might be wrong? I'm using Enve 4.5 AR rims with Schwalbe Pro Ones in 28 mm, and Stan's sealant.

Walk of shame not in exercise database
I'm sure the bitter taste of defeat burns extra calories. Not to mention cursing the god of inner tubes.

Wildflower riot in the Goat Rocks (hiking pics)
Magical day in the Goat Rocks yesterday. In the center of a triangle Adams, Rainier, and Saint Helens make, high up on the ruins of a giant extinct volcano. We left the trail for a long ridge traverse and then came back down between two waterfalls. It was a wildflower riot. We started on the Snowgrass trail, which is an…

Garmin's newest watches
Probably nobody in here will use any of these, they're too expensive. If you think it's crazy that an iPhone could cost $1,000, Garmin is charging $2,500 for a watch. I'm posting this because it's a clue to what the next Fenix and ForeRunner might be like. After the F3 had been on the market a while, Garmin made a crazy…

Norse Peak (pics)
I knew this was going to be a great hike, I had seen beautiful photos, heard that the wildflowers are starting to peak, and knew that there would be burn meadows. Somehow it was so much better than I hoped for. I did a socially distanced hike with two close friends. In the old days we'd carpool and catch up on the way,…

Bean Peak (pics)
I did Bean Peak with my friend Mary this weekend. It's a short hike that follows a creek into a lovely meadow, then a fun scramble to the top. The views are spectacular, and there's just enough exposure to make it spicey. From the car to the summit and back was 6.5 miles and 2,800 feet of elevation gain. We saw lupine,…
