Lifting twice a week- Best bang for your buck?
I recently joined a gym so that I can start a regular lifting routine. My main goal is to gain overall strength and flexibility, particular to prevent future running injuries. I would like to lift twice per week, hopefully Tuesday and Thursday. I can probably spend up to and hour each day. Does anyone have any suggestions…

Do you crate your dog when you aren't home?
We are trying to decide if and when we should stop crating our dog. She is a one and a half year old fox hound mix and weighs 45 lbs. The only time she is in her crate is when we are not home. I really don't think she would have a problem being left out of the crate, but I think she actually likes going in there when we…

Proximal hamstring tendonitis (high hamstring tendinopathy)?
Has anyone had this? Was it the result of overuse from running? How long did it take to heal? What exercises did or didn't you do in the meantime? Any info is appreciated. FWIW, I have been under the care of a PT, I am just looking for some actual experiences.

Dry Needle therapy?
Has anyone had dry needle therapy for tendon problems? I am a distance runner seeing a PT for a chronic hamstring issue and he is doing dry needle therapy to stimulate healing. I am trying to figure out what to expect and would love to hear some of your experiences.

Egg yolks?
If a recipe calls for egg whites (e.g. I just made macaroons), do you save the yolks? How do you store them? What do you use them for? FTR, I threw them away.

Meals for one?
I make a nice, home cooked meal for myself and my husband almost every night. He will be out of town for work this week, and I usually keep things simple when I am eating alone. What are you favorite EASY meals when you are solo for dinner? I don't mind cooking for myself, but I like to keep the effort at a minimal level.…

Appetizer recipes for New Year's Eve?
Anybody have any favorites you would like to share? I am thinking of making some Asian lettuce wraps and brie cheese baked in a puff pastry. Haven't tried the brie recipe yet, but it looks good. http://www.marthastewart.com/341765/baked-brie

Homemade protein bars anyone?
Does anyone make their own protein bars? I tried a recipe over the weekend that used whey protein powder and the results were very disappointing. Not only that, when I put it into the recipe builder, it only came in at 7g of protein per serving. I would like to know if anyone has any good recipes for protein bars that have…

Talk to me about beet greens
I am constantly throwing my beet greens away and I have no idea why. I know that they are edible and I love greens of all types. I have found some simple recipes that I might try, but I was just wondering if anyone could give me some opinions on how they substitute in things. How does their taste and texture compare to…

Racing back to back half marathons?
I have two half marathons on my radar in October on back to back weekends. Originally, my plan was to race one of them (try and PR) and casually run the other, although I never decided which one I wanted to race. As they grow closer, I still can't decide. There are reasons for wanting to race both of them. Is this a bad…

Question about Garmin data on the treadmill
I have a question for the Garmin users (specifically the FR220) who use it on the treadmill. I don't use it often on the treadmill except to monitor my HR, but I would like to transfer my data accurately to Garmin Connect and Strava when I do. My experience with using the Garmin to track my pace and mileage is that it is…

Sleep poll. How much do you get?
I am going to post this in the general fitness forum as well, but I am mainly interested in runner's answers. 1. How many hours of sleep to you usually get? 2. Do you feel like it is enough? 3. Do you increase your sleep time as you increase your mileage? 4. Does you sleep affect your training? I used to average about 7…

Sleep. How much do you get?
1. How many hours of sleep to you usually get? 2. Do you feel like it is enough? 3. Do you increase your sleep time as you increase your training? 4. Does you sleep affect your training? I used to average about 7 hours a night, but I am currently getting about 6.5 since I got a puppy. I have noticed that it affects my…

Healthy but exciting seafood recipe
I want to make a nice dinner for my husband on Friday night. I am leaning toward making seafood. We eat fish and shrimp often, but never anything too exciting. Does anyone have any recipes that are different from the usual baked fish, shrimp scampi, etc? Also has to be gluten free. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Let's Talk Marathon Courses!
Since there are so many people here with marathon experience, I thought it would be fun to compare thoughts on favorite courses and races. If you are anything like me, you are constantly adding races to your bucket list (even though in October I said I was only going to do one more marathon, yet I have one scheduled in two…

Can/should I do this?
My good friend will be running her third marathon (Cincinnati Flying Pig) on May 1st. She and I trained for and ran our first marathon together (also the Pig) in 2013. It was such a great experience, but we kind of went in different directions with our running since then and have not run together very much since. I had not…

Ragnar anyone? Would love to hear about your experience...
I am thinking of trying to get a team together to do the Buckeye Country or Appalachians Trail race in the fall. Just wondering what to expect. I currently do very little trail running. I have done a lot of road running, including three marathons, and lots of hiking, but have yet to really put the two together. I am…

looking for breakfast casserole recipes
I am looking for some recipes for egg based breakfast casseroles. I need the recipe to be fairly easy to assemble and feed 12-13 people (along with a fruit salad). Must also be gluten free (I do not want to use GF bread because I am the only one that needs it to be GF, so I would prefer it to be naturally GF). I have found…

Long runs...alone or group?
Wondering what is everyone's preference for doing their long training runs. I usually do mine alone and I have talked to several people recently who find this odd. I have met up with groups in the past, but sometimes I find it hard to find somebody that is running at my pace the entire way. If you run with a group, do you…

Natural Peanut butter
How do you get your natural peanut butter to homogonize? Regardless of how much I stir it and how I store it, I always end up with and oily layer at the top and a dry, lumpy mess when I get to the bottom of the jar. Any tips on how to keep this from happening?

Problems with buying bulk quinoa?
Has anyone had a bad experience with bulk quinoa? Twice I have bought it from bulk bins (from two different stores) and I have ended up with pantry moths both times, with the quinoa being the obvious source. If I buy it prepackaged from Costco or Kroger, I have never had a problem. It's much cheaper in the bins, but I…

Daniel's Training Tables...How accurate for you?
I am just wondering how accurate the Daniel's tables are for your marathon pace based on your half marathon PR and heart rate data? When I plug in my HM PR and my resting and (guesstimated) max HR, the numbers that the table populates with are spot on accurate in terms of my HR vs. pace for training runs and my 5 mile PR…

Struggling to set macros for marathon training
I am currently training for an October marathon. I am reading Matt Fitzgerald's Racing Weight and have realized that, according to him, I have been woefully deficient in my carbohydrate intake. I am 5'0, 102 pounds and run about 50-55 miles per week. He suggests that I should be consuming at least 300g of carbs to support…

Toppings for fish tacos?
Homemade fish tacos are one of my favorite fast and easy weeknight meals. I usually use cod, grouper or mahi, lightly seasoned and pan fried. But we have them so frequently, I am always looking for different ways to top them. I like avocado and cherry tomatoes, or cabbage slaw and chipoltle Greek yogurt. I serve them in…

Runner's Poll: Thoughts on Cross-training?
Runners: How do you approach cross-training 1-2 days per week? (Note: By cross-training, I am referring to other forms of cardio exercise, not strength training). A. I appreciate the break from running B. It's a necessary evil, but I do it to minimize the risk of injury C. No thank you...I'd rather just run I'll go first:…

Marathon courses-Hilly vs. Flat
We have all heard courses labeled as "flat and fast", which are usually considered ideal for a PR. However, I have noticed that, given an equal average pace, my average heart rate is almost always 4-5 bpm lower on a hilly run than on a flat run. I am not sure if this would in any way translate to a faster race time, but is…
