Feeling like too much of a failure to start over.

How do you know how many calories you're really burning?
Is there any way to really tell how much you're burning aside from wearing a device? When I do the elliptical, the machine says I burn about 100 calories in 30 minutes, and I've heard that the machines often overestimate.
