The pull-up
So I can do exactly zero of these. It's never bothered me really that I can do zero, but I'm wondering if I should try to. I imagine it works a set of muscles that otherwise don't get worked - is that the reasoning? Aside from the obvious reason of being stronger. And if you can only do zero, how do you even start.…

Please remind me...
I know I've been told this before, and probably 5.2 million threads exist stating it - but I have mad cow and it's eating my memory (j/k). How long after you start lifting does it make your weight go up or stay the same? I know that loss gets put on hold initially because of the shifts in waking up the muscles and water…

6 months - tell me what you know
Yesterday I had a very rushed doctor's appointment to discuss my cholesterol. Rushed because my doctor was running behind (because her patients were running behind), and I had to tell her I needed to go because my son had an appointment to get his braces on. So I had about 8 minutes to cram in 'discussion' - which was…

**sneaks in, head down**
Yeah...fell out of lifting practice, unfortunately. I was very sick in December which is what stopped my progress on all exercise fronts. I should've started back sooner, but I didn't. Unfortunately, this means that I had a major deload to mostly dropping down to starting over. The deadlift and squats started with a little…

A funny surprise
I just ate a tootsie roll midgie (vanilla) and shocked myself by thinking "OMG, that is the sweetest little morsel of chewy sugar ever!" --- I guess that's a side effect of low carb and limiting sugar more. I've also stopped using any type of sweetening agent in my coffee - it's just a small amount of heavy whipping cream…

Lab results = bacon in my blood stream
Ok, so not bacon exactly, but my cholesterol came back high. It's been high in the past, but at the time I was told not to worry too much about it because my good cholesterol was high enough that the bad wasn't concerning. I haven't met with my doc yet, but sent the results over to her (my gynecologist ran the tests and…

December, January and the challenges
December was a tough month for me. I set my goals in the challenge thread and I was pretty awesome in the beginning, and only 'ok' towards the end. Exercise didn't happen at all thanks to a series of unfortunate events. First week I got sick, a cold - made me feel too tired to do anything. The 2nd week that cold morphed…

If it fits
What do you guys do with the carbs - do you eat "IIFYM" or do you specifically exclude certain things with your low carb (like breads/pastas, etc)? I've only been doing this for a fairly short time and I've used some of Atkins products (recording the actual carbs, not net) - and another example - I had some chicken and…

Annual coming on December 24
I have a new doctor (mine quit a few months ago), so it's a clean slate. They have my records and everything, but I really want to fill this doctor in and get off on a good foot! I know I want to have my hormone levels tested and I want to switch to constant BCP to stop my periods (for a few reasons). I'm finished having…

Magnesium & Potassium
So I've received some advice and I've done some reading. I've been having some terrible foot/calf cramps out of nowhere. It does seem to coincide with dropping my carb intake, but I can't be 100% sure of that. After reading about the symptoms/signs of low mag, I'm almost positive (without being tested) that it's definitely…

It's me with another question - preference based, I think
Do you track net carbs or all carbs? At first I was trying to stay under 100 carbs, now I'm shooting more for under 50 (but I'm pretty ok with up to 75). I know that's a little higher of a range than a lot of you, but I am hoping to ease in. I'd say I have about 20 pounds I'd like to lose...so not a super drastic need for…

Where I stand with this new style of mine!
General Low Carb synopsis: The goods: significant decrease in churning tummy/intestines, slightly better fitting clothes, surprisingly fewer cravings and food that I miss than what I expected, full for longer with very infrequent feelings of hunger, recipe hunting is fun, I'm learning a lot about a lot, I seem to have a…

It's been rough *head hanging, kicks stone*
I made it through a week of lower carbin' it (last week). My stomach was happier, felt better. My mood sucked, though, soooo bad. I didn't like watching people eat my favorite things. It wasn't thaaat hard, but it was annoying. My crappy mood poured into Mon/Tue this week and I tanked on the carbs. Chicago style pizza,…

Holding steady?
I've been climbing my way up the weights and I'm at a point with most of them that I am really struggling. I don't look forward to the lifting because of the time it's started to take for me to get through it. I lift in the mornings and it becomes a rush when I fail and I'm supposed to wait 5 minutes until the next try. I…

Lower carbs and your preference/style
So as we all know there are many ways/degrees to be "low carb". I've tried a few in my life (read: Atkins, Primal, Paleo, etc.). I know it works well for me and I generally feel better, but I basically suck at sticking to it forever. This week I started low carb eating again (under 100g of carb/day is the general goal). So…

November is the month of watching what I eat
I fell off every wagon a few months ago with some major life events and vacations and all that. October has been climb back on the workout wagon (yay, it's working) - Strong Lifts and Cardio (in an alternating sort of pattern). This week I've been slacking on the 'organized' cardio, but have been very busy cleaning and…

Been MIA, but I'm back!
I've been gone from this group for quite some time now. I stopped lifting for a period (really I stopped exercising for the most part altogether). Got married at the end of July, went to Hilton Head for a week with the family, went to Mexico in September, etc., etc.). So Ive been busy and all that and got out of the habit…

SL vs. NROLFW?
Thoughts? I have experienced the strength increase with SL, but I'm considering changing it up for the sake of doing something different (for me mentally, not really physically). Good or bad idea? I don't know a single thing about NROLFW... Aside from those 2, any other favorites?

Slacker, checking in!
I'm back and I confess I've been not only a slacker with checking in, but a slacker with my lifts. The past month has been terrible for me with my workouts. I was hanging in there with 2 or 3 lifts a week and then last week I did nothing. So, tonight, I'll get back on it. This week and next I have no reason that I can't…

Grip stengthening
Do you use those little hand held grip thingy's to strengthen your grip? I've started using them recently, I guess I'll see how well it works. I can tell you that my hands are faster to fail me on deads than my body is. Hopefully this will slowly increase my wrist/grip strength. I broke my left wrist as a child and it's…

In terms of scheduling and being tired
What works best for you? To do your lifting and cardio (running, biking or walking for me) on the same day and rest more days - or spread it out. I was doing lift-cardio-lift-cardio-lift-cardio-rest-repeat for the week. I am up to try a different rhythm, but I don't know if I'll have enough time in a single day to do both…

Taking time off of lifting
Do you do this on purpose? On a schedule? Is it a bad/good idea? Are you afraid if you skip a week you won't get back to it the next week? I don't have any plan to do this, but I was curious. I know at the end of July I'll be vacationing at Hilton Head and I'm just guessing my usual routine isn't gonna happen lol. Then it…

My blog surprised me!
I wrote a blog a month ago about lifting and how it's changed my thinking/feelings about the number on the scale. It got the usual 3 up votes (haha) and that was that. This morning, though, I logged in and it was in the Popular Blogs list on the side of the page! I was totally surprised by that, but I'm really hoping that…

Lifting & Eating
So, general consensus for PCOS seems to be less carbs, more fat, moderate protein right? For lifting all I hear is EAT PROTEIN AND LOTS OF IT! Is this still a true story for PCOS peeps, or should I just not listen to these chants?

Recording calories burned for lifting - what's your method and reasoning?
On my lift days I warm up with some cardio (a 5-8 minute cardio burst on an app - I'm sweating by the end of it). My HRM says I burn about 55-75 calories in those 5-8 minutes. Then I move on to squat warmups, then squats, then the rest of it. By the end (about 50-60 minutes) my HRM says anywhere from 275-350 calories…

Worth it for the warm-up routine? I keep thinking I'll pull the trigger and buy...but then I don't. Anyone?

Sedentary plus exercise vs. TDEE/BMR - what do you do?
I've been going along with my calories set at a specific amount and eating back 80% of exercise calories. I see some friends who list exercise calories at 1 per workout using TDEE/BMR calculations. What's your preference and why? I chose the method I currently do because my workouts were not consistent enough to pin down…
