Prehypertension - anyone else?
I'm studying dietetics in college, and in one of my classes we were recently discussing hypertension. I'd been to the doctors a couple of times in the past four months and just had a physical, but they didn't say anything about my blood pressure, so I assumed it was fine. On a whim I checked it at the pharmacy on my way…

Cheesy, Quick, and Cheap: Brown Rice, Black beans, and corn!
Made this for dinner and it was a hit with my guy, thought I'd share it. 1 cup dry brown rice (I used Trader Joe's Organic Brown Jasmine Rice) 1 can black beans, drained of all liquid and rinsed thoroughly (I used Trader Joe's Black Beans) 4 -ish ounces of reduced fat cheese (I used 4.4 ounces of Cabot Reduced Fat Cheddar…

I hate steel cut oats!
I don't know if its the brand (Country Organics) or what, but I can't get them anywhere near soft without them burning to the pan! I feel like I'm eating hamster pellets! I'm switching over from instant oatmeal, so I know there's going to be a consistency difference, but these are just BAD. No one else I live with will eat…

Favorite workout video available on Netflix instant?
Pretty much what the title says ... we have Netflix for the household and I'd like to start using some of the streaming videos available, but I'm curious what people here have used and liked. Whatever I do has to be easy on the knees - no squats or lunges for now. :frown:

Using a mattock/raking soil/shoveling - how many calories?
I'm working on putting in a raised bed for a garden - which involves moving a six-foot high pile of dirt, smoothing it out, and chopping the beginnings of trees out of it. I had tracked it as general gardening but my boyfriend argued that it seemed more like shoveling. What should I log this as? I do it for 20 minutes and…

I hate "don't over do it!"
We've all heard it, right? "Don't over do it!" "Take it easy!" "Don't get hurt!" "Work your way up to it!" I didn't GET this way by working out to hard - or doing it at all! I've heard warnings about exercising my entire life it seems - its like if my face is red or my legs are a little shaky, people in my life assume that…

What to wear if you can't afford "workout" gear?
Well, spring is in the air and that means getting outside and going for walks, doing as much of any other workout I can out there, and in general not being cooped up! The problem I'm having is that the clothes that I have aren't designed to be workout gear... I have a good, new pair of shoes, but as far as tops and pants…

Getting ready for summer: camping foods!
We, like a lot of people, are planning on getting away for about a week this summer - in our case packing up the Jeep, grabbing some hiking boots and camping supplies, and heading into Acadia National Park to soak up the sunshine and salt water! I'm already freaking out about what we're going to eat. I haven't camped since…

Not an Army wife, just a girl friend, but I could use some s
My BF is National Guard and is doing ROTC while in college - we've been together for a year, have all sorts of plans revolving around him commissioning ... and he can't seem to pass his PT test to go to LDAC this summer. He's freaking out, I'm freaking out, and I could really just use some support right now... it's getting…

Hudson Sport Delux Heart Rate Monitor doesn't count calories
So my boyfriend had a brand new HRM sitting in the back of his gear closet, and I wanted to try to use it to track calories burned through exercise. However, it looks like it might not track them? The HRM is geared toward runners, with the ability to count laps, and keeps track of your heart rate and the maximum heart rate…

After just a week...
I've been tracking since the first of March (the first few days on a different site, the rest here) and have only been working out AT ALL for the past week - that being said I've noticed the following: - More energy, NO coffee! I used to spend all day in front of the computer, with maybe a half hour up cleaning up the…

Gained! UGH!
I've almost erased any of my minimal weight loss by GAINING - this past week was full of sodium and eating out and being stupid, but I didn't think I'd gain two pounds. I'm pretty discouraged right now.

Feedback on my diary?
Bored? Come criticize what I eat! But no, really, I'd like some feedback on my diary if anyone is so inclined - I welcome suggestions for improvements!

Best time of day to workout?
I'm planning on working out today but I'm not really sure when to do it. Right now (10 a.m., overslept so I've just gotten up, haven't eaten) or later in the day? I feel like it's probably a mater of personal preference but is it going to make any difference to my body whether I eat first or not?

Meal planning help?
So I've be tracking my calories since the first of March ( I started on Livestrong and migrated over to MPF a few days ago ) and I've just sort of been eating whatever we have in the house. My bf and I share a kitchen (and groceries) with his parents, and they eat a high fat, highly processed diet. We have a small "dorm"…

Help me figure out what to do with this old kale!
I have some Kale in my fridge that's quickly going limp and I don't think its really suitable for my normal steaming method. Any suggestions for cooking?

Another newbie!
Hi everyone! I'm new to MFP after finding out that the app for my Droid was free, unlike Livestrong who wanted $2.99 - cheapness brought me here but the easy to use site is keeping me! I'm 27, 200 pounds, and currently looking to loose about 20 - we'll worry about any more than that after I get down. In the past my weight…
