Augusta 70.3
I haven't posted in here in forever, but I wanted to update. I completed my 2nd 1/2 Ironman yesterday in Augusta. It was lots of fun. If you are interested in my very long race report, you can read it here: http://www.swimbikemom.com/2013/09/10870.html if you ever decide to do one, I highly recommend Augusta!

My first marathon
I did my first marathon on Saturday. I have to say that it was MUCH harder than I thought it could be. I had trained a lot, but it was SO HARD! At about mile 22 I thought, "well, this is it. I'll never do an Ironman." I have my first half ironman in May, and until that moment I thought I would one day work towards Ironman,…

Ever do REV events?
I was just looking at the series. Has anyone done any REV events?

Ironman races versus Ironman DISTANCE races
What are your thoughts on ultras (Ironman distance) races that are not sponsored by Ironman. I am interested for a few reasons. 1) They are cheaper. 2) They don't fill up as fast. 3) There are some closer to home. SO??? THOUGHTS??? I am doing my first HIM in May, and I want to have an Ironman goal for late 2013 or 2014. I…

"Nothing is worse for your cycling than your running"
I don't love to bike. I do it, but I don't love it. I love to run. So, about a week ago I was in a bike shop. We are looking for road bikes for the kids. The sales lady was trying HARD to sell me a tri bike. I can't afford it. I love my road bike. I'm not buying one. NOT. Maybe one day I'll have the money, but I am not…

Guys opinion wanted -- leg muscles
Since really stepping up my running, adding biking, and starting weight training, my legs have "muscled up" a lot. I'm working on some butt "problem areas," but it will get there. So, I am now starting to get that "shelf" muscle on the front of my thigh. I don't like it. I think it makes me look "thick" through the thighs.…

Time-Crunched Triathlete?
Has anyone read or used this? I am trying to train for a HIM, but having trouble with time. Something always seems to get in the way. I'm going to try to get serious about setting up a schedule after NEXT weekend when I finish my half marathon. Does anyone have any suggestions or like this book? I'm a full time working mom…

strength training?
How much strength training do you do in conjunction with triathlon training? Do you find it helps? After talking with a friend, I decided I should do more strength training. I did a session with a trainer today, and I will do one next week. This is NOT something I can afford weekly, but I have "given" myself a few sessions…

Triathlon coach?
How many of you have a triathlon coach? If so, what type (one-on-one in your area, online, etc.)? How much do you pay (if that isn't too personal)? I am interested in one, but I am not sure I can afford this, and I am wondering if it is really necessary and/or how much it would help.

And so it begins....
Today I officially start training for a 70.3. It's still 6 months away, but I am ready to get to work. I bought a few books to help, and I mapped out my plan for the week. This morning I did an awesome swim workout that was in a book I bought. It was very challenging. I actually needed about 15 more minutes to complete it,…

Wear your sunscreen!
Yesterday my husband and I had the scare of our lives. He went to the dr. last week to have a mole removed and they found a few other spots that were concerning. They called yesterday morning to say the one in his leg is melanoma. We went in yesterday afternoon and they cut a HUGE area out of his leg. We are extremely…

Did my last triathlon of my first season on Sunday...
It was a Sprinternational.......1000 meter swim, 21 mile bike, 4 mile run. I have to say that I wish I had stopped my season after my first International a few weeks ago. I'm still bummed out about this one. I am not sure why...my times were good (for me), but I just don't feel great about it. I've been sick for about…

Conquered my first Olympic
Yesterday was my first Olympic triathlon, and I am pleased to say it went very well. I was SO nervous, and there are things I would do differently, but I did it, so I am thrilled that it is over. I managed to squeak in a few seconds shy of 3 hours, so I was thrilled with that. That time was good enough to get me 2nd in my…

I don't get this "qualifying" thing...please explain
Yesterday, while on a bike ride, a person mentioned that his goal is to qualify for the Vegas 70.3 HIM World Championship. I went out last night to try to read about how to qualify, but I don't get it. It's a point thing...I get that....but it looks like you don't know until race day if you qualify. That can't be right.…

My blog/website
So...inspired by the Swim, Bike, Mom woman, I decided to start a blog/website and detail my journey into triathlon life. I'm SO at the beginning of this all, so I don't think this has any advice for anyone, but it is more about balancing it all. I work, have four kids, and I'm trying something totally new. I think it is…

Training plan & nutrition
Two questions... 1. Does anyone have a FREE training plan for an Olympic that is good? I am just spent out right now, but I think I need a more formal plan. I've looked on beginner triathlete, but most of the ones that interest me are not free. SHOCKING, I know. 2. HELP with nutrition. I literally can't stomach those darn…

Sprint Triathlon #3 - Complete!
Yesterday I did my 3rd sprint triathlon. It went well...took 2 1/2 minutes off of my last time finishing at 1:22:50. The only problem was that it was SO HOT that I thought I would pass out. The run was pretty miserable. My run time was not what I wanted (over 25...wanted low 24s), but I literally had no more to give in…

Nutrition
I am starting to train longer distances than my "just a sprint" distance, and I am realizing that I will need to take some sort of nutrition in an Olympic distance. I didn't in the sprints and was fine. This morning I swam a mile, ran 5 miles, and then biked for 30 minutes. Though that isn't all that much, I did find that…

"Just a sprint"
Ok Iron Men and Iron Ladies, I would like to ask you to remove the phrase "Just a sprint" from your vocabulary. When a person is BEGINNING, I would assume that most begin with "just a sprint." I have found that the more people I talk about this with, the more often I hear, "OH, well for just a sprint you don't need…

Got a new bike!
I was out of town for a bit on a work trip. While I was gone my husband found himself a bike on Craigslist (great deal, btw). He sent me a text saying he wanted for us to go biking together when I got home (yesterday) and had someone to watch the kids while we did it. So, when I went out to our building to get out my bike…

Finished #2!
Today I did my second sprint triathlon. It was very different from my first (last week). It was an open water lake swim, so that was significantly easier than the choppy swim of my first one last week. The official results have not been posted (grrrrrr) and I had to leave before the results came out there, but by MY watch…

Finished! ... And it was awesome!
Yesterday was my first sprint triathlon. It was in Tybee Island, Georgia, which was a great location. The swim actually ended being pretty bad because the tide shifted the night before, so we swam against the tide. Ouch! It was very choppy and they were pulling people out right and left. The bike was flat except for one…

Ever do a series of the same race?
In Charleston, SC (about 2 hours from me) they have a tri series of five sprints, but they are all the same (May-August). I am going to do one Sunday and may repeat it on July 8. I'm not so sure why you would do it 5 times in the same season. Any thoughts?

What do you eat the night before a sprint?
Before races (running), I never think about what I eat the night before. But, I figure that since the sprint will take 1.5-2 hours, I should plan a decent meal the night before. What do you guys eat?

Is this reasonable?
I am registered to run the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon (half marathon) on Oct. 21. They are offering a discount of $20 on the International distance triathlon the weekend before. I would really like to do it, but I am not sure if it is reasonable to think I could be ready for an international by Oct. I am scheduled to do my…

Swimming time?
How long does it take you to swim a mile? I've been doing this 3-4 times per week in the pool. I'm not trying to be fast, I'm just swimming freestyle. How long should this take? Today it took 40 minutes (about). I haven't been worrying about increasing speed, but I think I need to start!

My mother's day gift was bike shoes & pedals!
I am so scared! I know I NEED to use clipless pedals and bike shoes, especially since I am struggling with biking, but I am so afraid of falling over and getting hurt. I thought I wanted to "lollipop" kinds, but I did some research and decided I wanted the more standard type that clip in front to back (can't remember the…
