Strength training: the Four Percent Solution? Or what other formula for increasing weight?
The low reps, low sets with weights are working for my chronic-pain-bad muscles! At least, I can tolerate the exercises and added a rep each, and so here we are. I even have actual DOMS today instead of the nerve and spasm pain, which is so amazing I can't describe it :) Thank y'all so much for your answers to how minimal…

Absolute smallest amount of reps and sets for strength?
What do y'all think is the smallest amount of sets (particularly) someone could use to gain strength in a muscle? I don't mean should or ideally. I mean the bare minimum that will still strengthen a muscle, hypothetically. Hypothetically but with some science, tho ;) What do you think? Assume the muscle is unusually weak…

My dad has requested a meal tomorrow that will have 900 calories itself and is carb-heavy!
He loved the meal I cooked for Thanksgiving, and the leftovers, which I ate one day, too. So that's 2 days higher than normal. Fair enough. But our friend gave us yeast rolls and country ham. I could make that reasonable. But no, my dad wants scrambled eggs (cooked in the meat oil and butter)and cheese grits along with it,…

Can you get DOMS in your diaphragm?
My diaphragm area feels strange. I've started sprinting and am trying to do longer sprints, so I know I've been breathing differently during them! It could feel like DOMS if that's possible to get in the diaphragm. I can't think of what else it could be. ??? What do y'all think? Ever had DOMS there?

What (average) size pants are 39 inch hips on a woman?
I know the waist size matters, so if you answer and know the waist size measurement, that would be great. I seriously can't figure out what size I am now. There are too many brands and their size charts don't work when you order online! Before I have to try on a gazillion pairs to find my average size, I figured I'd just…

A quick question about glucose testing
I'm supposed to test my BG 4x a day until my next doctor's app't to get a log for him (but I'm not diabetic, so it's not health-critical testing). It looks pretty much like I'm pre-diabetic from my tracking so far. It's supposed to be based on my meals, but between a couple of them, I sip on coffee with cream and might…

Uh oh, does Metformin make you lose your appetite?
It is not like me at all to not find enough to eat in a day. I've been on Met a few weeks now, at a low dose, and recently I don't get hungry like I used to. Is it because my BG drops aren't screaming at me to eat? I have pre-diabetic BG levels that spike really high after meals, and my drops would still make me feel shaky…

Where is your barbell equipment at home? :D
Or will I be the only one with a big ole barbell in the middle of my living room? I finally broke down and got one for my glute bridges. Everything else I could cover with dumbbells, etc. Please tell me y'all just stick them in your kitchens or odd corners, because mine is not going to have its own special room, lol.…

Glute Check
I ran across a great post on a variation of the Bird Dog that I'll have to try: http://zachdechant.wordpress.com/2010/11/18/the-superdog/ I was 'prescribed' the normal Bird Dog when my back problem first came up, and I do still think the regular version is important for the back/core, especially for beginners. But this…

Do y'all think my anemia could be affecting my exercise?
This may be a dumb question, because I know it can in general :) My hemoglobin is low, and I'm with a gastro guy sending him lovely stool swatches through the mail and all that :D Those results will be a bit. I take iron 1x a day, Rx, from my GP. This has only been for maybe 2 months. I definitely noticed having to rest…

Hiking Boots OK for Pavement Walking?
I'm trying to add regular walking to my fitness routine in the winter, but the only footgear I have for that is hiking boots. I'm going to be walking a paved track in a park. Are the boots OK, or do I need to look into something more like athletic shoes? It gets wet and/or icy here in winter, so it would have to be…

What calorie level do you crash on? How soon?
I'm just curious, mainly :) I had an awful crash day today, and my doctor had given me a glucose meter to see if I'm getting hypoglycemic often. Nope (I'm actually higher than either of us knew). I've eaten good proteins, great carbs, etc. So what is the deal? Looking at my logging that I do on the PC, if I net as low as…

Maintaining/gaining muscle and meal times
My specific question isn't nearly as interesting as the whole topic, so feel free to veer off subject :) I'm trying to maintain muscle/gain muscle at a slight caloric deficit. I'm a newb gainer again, but we'll say I'm trying to keep all the muscle I can while gaining strength and not worry about my hopes ;) But I keep…

Shot in arm. How sore will it get?
I just got a flu shot and the nurse said my arm would get sore. Does it get sore like a tetanus shot? I could switch my UB workout with my LB workout and go on and do arms before it gets sore tomorrow. Is it worth changing up my schedule, or should it feel fine either way? Does yours get sore with these shots?

Halloween Outfits or plans! :D
So tell me about your outfit for Halloween! I love this time of year :) I'm still a tad curvier than my taste, but where I go is so dark that I'm going full Christina Hendricks this year, rocking the curves. The outfit I really wanted was only available in a size that won't have any extra give (it's that stretchy velvet…

Metabolism and 100-200 calories a day
Hi! I'm new, but I have a burning question I've been wanting to ask forever, so that's why I started posting. Do y'all think it's at all possible to try to lose weight too slowly? By that I mean that do you think it's possible that a body's metabolism could absorb a difference of less than 200 calories a day and not really…
