My success: A story in pink
OK, I was trying on a new coat (trying to decide between two I bought) and had my daughter snap a photo. When I looked back through all my photos I've taken, I found series of pink pictures that I thought were really telling! And as things go slow as molasses these days, and it becomes harder, I need things like this to…

OK Runner Peeps: 3 weeks to first half marathon
What I have been doing up until now, is 2 short runs during the week (3 to 4 miles) and then a longer run on weekends. Some weekends it is a "medium" run of 6 to 7 miles, and some weekends it's a long run where I try to hit 10+ (but always over 8). Yesterday, I did my first 11 mile run. I was so glad when it was over LOL.…

NSVs Galore! With pictures
First NSV: This month, I hit 1 year of running. I started C25K in March of 2012. I have NEVER been a runner. Not even as a kid when I wasn't overweight. I am naturally slow I think, and I'm OK with that. But this month, I hit 1 year of running. I've run many 5Ks, a 10K, and have my first half marathon in April. People ask…

1 Year of Running, results of body composition tests
I've been on MFP, losing weight and exercising for almost 2 years now. I've lost almost 80 lbs. I need to lose at least another 20 lbs. It's going slowly now and winter has been rough for me exercise wise as I prefer to run outside. But it's warming up now, so I can run outside more often! I started running in March of…

New (Old) Shoes causing strained calf muscles?
My running shoes wore out so I broke out a new pair. Same shoe, same year, same color, everything. I wore them on a 6.5 mile run and my calf muscles were VERY sore for several days afterwards. I've never had that issue before. Any idea why that would be? My feet, knees and shins didn't bother me at all (my knees were…

Hmmm...time to replace my running shoes?
They still look brand new...on the top. On the bottom, the tread is starting to wear. There are little pink bits and parts of those are completely worn off. I thought I had more time, but maybe not? They still feel OK, but not as good as when they were new. When do you replace your running shoes? I've had these for 6 to 7…

A tiny, tiny, but important victory.
I started this journey on May 9th, 2011. Wow, that was a LONG time ago! I've been more successful than I could have imagined and I have probably another 7 or 8 months to go. Slow and steady for sure LOL. Over the month of December, 2011, I actually gained 3 lbs. Not a big deal, I got back on track in January 2012 and all…

NSV: My Annual Physical
I had my annual physical today. My Dr. is thrilled with my progress. So much so, she wouldn't even order a cholesterol test. My last one, my numbers were great, though my triglycerides were borderline at 166. She said that was so close to normal it didn't count so I didn't need a retest. My blood pressure (which was never…

Cold Climates: When do you put away your bike?
We went biking last week here in MI. And well, Brrrr......I'm not ready to put it away yet, but I will dressing MUCH warmer next time. When (if?) do you put your bike away for the winter?

New Photo Updates
Just found a couple pictures - 12.5 years apart - I was about the same on my wedding day as when I started MFP.

17 months, 69 pounds down, 30 lbs. to go! Pics
Today I hit my second major goal - I am no longer considered obese on the BMI scale. I never really thought I'd get here but here I am! And I have no intention of stopping. I have another 30ish lbs. to go to hit my final goal. It's slow going for me (I have PCOS and Hashimoto's), and will probably take close to another…

I can't believe I did that...
Yesterday I went running. I was kind of stiff and not "feeling it" before I left home (I run at a park about 15 minutes away). But, I went anyway. I told my husband I should do a long run, so might be gone a while, but that I probably would be back early if my legs wouldn't hear of it. And then I started running. And kept…

Questions for cold weather runners
First, do you find yourself quite a bit slower in the cold? I've been getting consistently slower and was trying to decide if its the cold or fatigue (I've been increasing distance a bit lately) And secondly, HOW do you warm up after your run? I'm ok while I'm running but then just freeze the rest of the night. Brrrrr!!!

What running does to fat - revisited!
I posted a similar thread earlier this year. I took a new picture this weekend and am thrilled with my progress! The first picture is me before starting MFP and losing any weight. Clearly not the same angle, but you get the idea. Here is a before shot from February 2011 - meeting my son for the first time in Korea! Pic on…

My running NSV today
I've been running since March. My first 10K is next Saturday. I'm a SLOW runner. I also switched to the Galloway method due to injuries. I'm actually slightly faster that way and can certainly go farther that way. I'm running a charity 1 mile run at work on Thursday so today I decided to run the first mile of my training…

Halloween 2011 to 2012
OK, neither of these are the most flattering pictures (hubby is a terrible photographer LOL) but you can definitely see the difference. I've lost about 42 lbs. in the last year.

Girls - favorite jeans?
I need a nice pair of jeans for family pictures in a few weeks (in DisneyWorld!). I currently like INC jeans, in curvy, because they actually fit my waist. However, I'm in between sizes right now, which makes the bigger size too long. So, I'm looking into other brands. I like Loft jeans too, but I want something a bit…

Zombies Run! People - accuracy of GPS?
I've done 3 missions now and it's fun! I also run my Jog Log app to which then links to run keeper. When I compare the 3, jog log and runkeeper are similar but Zombies run is very different. When I finished tonight jog log said I went 3.1 miles in about 32 minutes (faster than it probably should have been). Runkeeper said…

Issues running with a stroller?
I ran with my 3 kids last night, one in a stroller. I've been running for 6 months, and once I got proper shoes, I haven't had any issues with shin splints. But last night, my shins hurt. Not constant, but occasional sharp shooting pain. Any idea why? It must be something in how I ran with the stroller, but I'm not sure…

How to bike in a group
I'm considering doing a sprint tri next year. Aside from not drowning, I'm a little worried about how to ride in a group. Right now, I only ride with my kids and husband and they're all usually behind me. I have to say, I'm not exactly a straight rider (drunken sailor comes to mind, though that's frequently because I'm…

A funny observation on my weight loss
I keep a weekly log of my weight (for the past 16 months) and use this to calculate monthly loss averages, and a chart with trend lines (yes, I'm a data geek). Today, I calculated monthly averages based on my exercise. And this is what I came up with: These go in time order too. The first one was from May '11 to September…

Any other running adventure apps out there? For kids?
I will start 5K training with my kids (8 and 9) soon. I think they'd get a kick out of something like Zombies, Run! but it's not appropriate for them (mild language issues and topics). Is there something else out there they might enjoy during our training runs?

Questions on Galloway Method
Ive been having hip problems lately - since starting 10K training. I've had to go from running 3 times a week to only once or twice and my hip still bothers me (waiting on an appointment with sports med). My endurance is terrible now too. I have a really hard time running continuously now. So I've decided to try the…

Jamie Oliver's Crunchy Garlic Chicken
The first time I made this, I made it exactly as he posted it. The crumb mixture is pretty heavy and wet because of all the butter. I would say you really need a good food processor for this too. I have a hand one (from Pampered Chef) and it was kind of big pain in the butt. So a food processor is now on my to get list…

What's wrong with this picture?
I was saddened when I received this picture from a nearby resort. Uh....fake hiking anyone?

Sore right hip. Running or biking the culprit?
I suspect it's the running, but not really sure. I've been running since March and am currently half way through a 10K training program. Over the past couple of weeks, my right hip has been just slightly sore. Slight enough, the first time I noticed it I just thought I slept on it funny. I've been biking farther and longer…

Speed by type of bike?
Just wondering what kind of speeds are "typical" based on the type of bike. On my old mountain bike, that needed new tires, I was averaging only 8 or 9 mph. On my new hybrid bike, I'm probably averaging 12 to 15 mph, when I'm not with my kids LOL. I don't have a road bike, nor do I want one (I don't trust cars enough to…

First ride on my Specialized Vita!
It was awesome!!! So much easier than my old Gary Fisher mountain bike. It was hard to go slowly with the kids so I kept going ahead and then looping back. After 8 miles hubby took them to the playset and I did another 5 miles on my own. I went about 13 miles and could have gone 20! The farthest I had gone previously was 9…

Can you easily change gear shift mechanisms?
My old mountain bike has a twist shifter. I liked it. When I bought my 7 and 8 year olds their first geared bikes, the ones I picked had the twist shifter. My new bike has the push button type shifter. My kids do not have the hand strength to actually change their gears! So I was wondering, how easy would it be to change…
