Hi all, I have a question!
I run, walk, and bike for my exercise. I currently have a Gary Fisher Tassajara mountain bike from nearly 15 years ago. It sat for quite a while and needs new tires. Since I don't actually mountain bike anymore (just hilly paved trails) I wanted to switch the tires to something more road friendly. The tires are 26 by…

New PR for 5K!
I had a race this morning and have a new PR to show for it. 38:33 (yes I'm Slow). My last 5K race time was 40:11 10 days ago so a good improvement! I did have to walk about 30 seconds or so. There was a big hill right at the end and after running up it, I had to walk. But still beat my last time so I guess it's ok lol.

Where in the world would you go as a reward?
I'm considering doing an international trip as a reward if I reach my goal weight. I would love to go back to Korea, but I think next year is too soon - I'd like the baby to be older the next time we go so he'll remember some of it. I would likely want to take our children with us. So, where would you go? And why?

NSV...Sizes
Things have been going pretty slowly lately. I had tried upping my calories and my loss slowed by about exactly as much as I raised my calories. So last week I lowered them back down. I still only lost half a pound, but this week (Wed is official weigh in) I might see 1.5 to 2 lbs. lost, if the scale holds true. But…

How do you "know" the right running shoes?
I went to a running store and got fitted. I am running in Nike Zoom Structures and really like them. However, I bought a second pair and they don't fit quite as well. So, I started looking for other shoes. I need stability shoes and frankly, I wanted something prettier LOL. Yeah, I know it doesn't matter...except it kind…

Results of RMR and BF Testing
I went this morning to the University and had my RMR tested and my BF using the BOD POD. The results were surprising to me. I'm a slow loser and really wanted to blame my metabolism (I have hypothyroidism and PCOS so it made sense to me). But apparently, I can't LOL. BMR Estimates: Harris-Benedict Formula: 1582…

My estimates for MFP plan vs. Eat More to Lose Weight
I had my RMR tested this morning, along with my body fat. I then used the chart the hospital gave me showing the multiplier for TDEE. I used the "Low Active" category multiplier of 1.52 because it classified that as "walking 50 minutes per day at 3 mph or golfing 40 minutes per day". I work out a bit more intense than…

Anyone get RMR tested? How did it differ vs estimates?
I'm getting mine tested next week at the university hospital. I suspect mine will be lower than the estimates. I know I saw someone on here recently with a ridiculously low RMB based on her height. So for others that have gotten tested, how did it compare to the estimates? I'm also getting BOD POD tested too.

What running does to fat...pictures
I have been on MFP for almost a year. I've lost 50.5 lbs. as of this morning. I started exercising last October (walking) and have been increasing the time, speed an intensity. About 1.5 to 2 months ago I started the C25K program. I'm on week 5. I've been going slow, repeating weeks, and working on my endurance and speed…

The protein shake I tried - review
A friend gave me one of these to try. They taste almost exactly like the pre-mixed Slimfast shakes (so not bad). They have 160 calories, 3 g fiber, 1 g sugar, and 30 g protein. You can get them at Costco for around $25 for 18. Just thought I'd share! I've only tried the chocolate flavor.…

How do I find "slow" races?
Kidding actually, but as I see people post their times and placings here, I've realized that running in a health conscious college town pretty much means I'll always be at the back of the pack LOL. It's fine, I'm not worried about winning any races. I just kind of laughed this morning as I realized my locale is not helping…

OK, I laughed through this article - Mud Runs for Rookies
I can't say it made me want to do one though LOL. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/13-Tips-for-Mud-Run-Rookies.htm

Since the scale treated me poorly this week...NSV
I had to record a 3 lb. gain today. I do think I gained a little (had a VERY bad weekend) but not 3 lbs. worth (just finished TOM so I'm blaming that LOL). So to make myself feel better, I'll post the NSV I had yesterday. I went to Target and tried on a dress and two styles of shorts. I grabbed the dress in an XL. It fit,…

How to eat more protein
I thought I had my macros set to 40/30/30 and I usually hit my protein targets. But yesterday I realized that a while ago when I switched from aiming for a 2 lb loss to a 1 lb loss, it switched my macros back to the default. So I changed them back yesterday and came no where NEAR hitting my protein goal. I don't love meat,…

NSV...there are some muscles under there!
After seeing the "ladies show me your guns" thread, I chuckled and snapped a picture of my arm. But then something surprising happened...when I compared to a similar picture from January, I was SHOCKED at the results. You see, I don't strength train (yet - plan on starting this fall, though I do carry a 28 lb. toddler…

Bridging to 10K
I completed my second 5K this weekend. I'm still very slow, but they are getting ever so slightly easier to complete LOL. I decided that I really do better with a training program to work from so I'm going to start a 10K training program. It's only 6 weeks long! Does that seem like a short amount of time to anyone else? I…

Running fail. Improving speed?
I finished C25K and ran a 5K on my own in 39:11. It doesn't bother me that I'm slow, but I do want to work on my speed now. I averaged about 4.7 mph on my last 5K. Tonight I decided to do speed ladder intervals: 600 meters at a faster run then walk for 300 meters. Then run 300 meters then walk 150. Run 150, walk 150. Then…

Eating more to lose weight - exercise motivation
So, I've slowly increased my calories a bit, but I just can't buy into the eat 15% less than your TDEE for a couple reasons. First, I haven't had BMR or RMR testing to know what my BMR is specifically - and due to hypothyroidism, and my historical experience, my BMR is likely lower than average. And second, and more…

Biking vs. Running
I have been running for a few months now and have a high calorie burn measured via Polar FT7. Typically, In around 48 minutes I'll burn 584 calories. My average heart rate during a typical session is around 170. It's HARD work for me so the calorie burn makes sense. Yesterday, I went biking for the first time in about 10…

Great running app: Jog Log
Someone recommended it in a thread here and I purchased it for $1.99. It's great! I love how you can set up intervals based on time or distance (LOTS of choices for the units of distance too) and it will call out when you should switch speeds or gears. It is super customizable for what the program calls out, you can…

C25K Graduate
I did it! I finished! I started my own version on March 2nd, 2012. On March 14th, 2012, I started an official C25K app on my phone, beginning on week 3. Once I went on to week 4, I started having shin splint issues so purchased new shoes at a running store. After returning the first pair and getting a different pair, and a…

Silly question about races
When do you start running? When the gun goes off or when you actually cross the starting line? The only 5K race I've done wasn't a typical one. It was mostly teen and pre-teen girls (girls on the run) and they generally didn't start running until they hit the starting line. I like that, personally, but somehow doubt that's…

MFP related NSV
Every time I reply to a fitness post, especially one about running, I'm just SHOCKED that I'm replying to a running question. Who would have thought? Certainly not me (or anyone who knows me, frankly LOL). I am still a relative beginner to running and have a long way to go, but I've been doing it long enough (3+ months)…

A hat for running?
I'm not enjoying the amount of sun I'm getting while running. I always wear sunscreen on my face, but I still am getting splotchy sun spotted skin. I haven't tried wearing a hat because of the extra heat. Does anyone run with a hat? Do you have a recommendation on one?

Reached my first goal today..and set a new one!
It's taken me a year and 3 weeks to do it, but I reached my first goal of losing 52 lbs. So today, I got to set my next goal, which is only another 16 lbs. away. Hoping I can reach that by fall! I also ran my first 5K this past Sunday. The next one is in 4 weeks! And here is a recent photo compare I posted at the one year…

What should I get tattooed, no really!
LOL...yes, I'm actually asking random strangers on the internet for what I should get tattooed. But wait, there's a good reason I'm asking. I have three children, ages 8, 7, and 2 and have a back piece for my older two. The baby has been home (all are adopted from Korea) for over a year and I still can't figure out what to…

Do you lose weight like this too?
When I started this process, I generally would lose small amounts of weight each week. Occasionally I would have a gain, or not lose, but most of the time, I would lose 1 to 1.5 lbs. a week. Ever since I started running in February, this has changed. On a monthly basis, I'm still losing 3 to 6 lbs. a month, but I don't…

My first 5K. Success!
I haven't completed C25K yet (one more week to go) and had signed up for The Color Run in July. Then I decided it would be fine to do a run/walk 5K so I signed up for The Girls On The Run 5K. It was today. And it was HOT. I hate running in the heat. On Thursday I did 5K at the park in 43:45 and ran for 35 minutes straight.…

Funny race day signs?
Looking for some ideas for signs for my kids to hold up on Sunday. Keep in mind, they're 7 and 8 (well, and 2) so they have to be clean :-) I have these lists so far: http://running.about.com/od/runninghumor/a/funnymarathonsigns.htm http://running.about.com/od/runninghumor/a/inspiringmarathonsigns.htm
