5 Mental “Secrets” for Staying on the Healthy Track by Deanna Schober So you changed your lifestyle. You’re moving more, you’re eating healthier foods, and you’re drinking water like it’s going out of style. You’re patient for about 6 weeks or so, and then you step on the scale or you try on those jeans, and the results…

Where in the world are you?
I'm in Atlanta, Georgia, but I've only been here less than 2 years. Before that, I was in Houston & Galveston, TX for 20 years, NYC for 10, Birmingham, AL for 13, and was originally from New Orleans! Where are you?

R.I.P. Zig Ziglar
"If you can dream it, then you can achieve it. You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want." What's your favorite?

Step 1: Shift your mindset (fake it 'til you make it)
Here's what I know for sure: I got fat by eating and drinking mindlessly. I ate and drank mindlessly because I had a few years of extra-high stress. Doesn't matter why. Everybody has 'em. That's life. When I made the active decision to take control of my life, I became deliberate about everything I chose to do. That…

I shocked even myself! (55 lbs down, 20 to go)
I went through a 100-hurricane in 2008, and gained 35 pounds in its wake. Now I've lost nearly 55 in the past 12 months, and shocked myself when I put these pix side-by-side today. Just 20 to go!

RECIPE: Superfood Stir Fry (vegetables & shirataki noodles)
This is a yummy and nutritious way to use up leftover vegetables (or cook up new). I made it with broccoli, edamame & arugula, but you could use whatever you like. Here's the recipe -- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/notes/alices-restaurant/superfood-stir-fry/430048517061136 Blog:…

It's all in our heads
Sunday I went to brunch and was craving a burger. This place makes a "skinny" bison burger -- about half the size of a regular one with lettuce, tomato & grilled onions on a 100-calorie bun. My friend ordered the gigunda-kitchen-sink burger and I was worried I'd feel deprived. I asked for a tablespoon of gorgonzola…

Darn you, Evil Sodium!
Seriously, if you care a whit about your sodium intake (which for women over 50 is supposed to cap at 1500mg), it's almost impossible to eat pre-packaged food. Another piece of evidence in support of home cookin'....

Do you calorie cycle (zig-zag)?
A MFP friend pinged me on my diary last night -- noting that at 949, I still had plenty of calories left for the day. I think she was worried that I was under-eating, bless her heart (as we say in the South). What she couldn't know was that I calorie cycle, and I'd had four 1800+ calorie days last week and an average of…

How do you help guide really bad eaters?
Do you know someone who's on a "get healthy" path, who routinely makes their calorie goal and is losing weight, but whose diet is 80% junk? What would you say to help guide them to healthier choices?

Navigating the Holidays
I'm going to use my holiday/travel time to break this pesky plateau. If you're interested in trying it, here's an easy explanation -- Go here: http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/ Half-way down the page on the right, play audio clip #2: Break Weight Loss Plateaus. I'm going to let my weeks away be "reset" weeks -- eating…

Let's put holiday eating in perspective
The reality is, you have to eat your TDEE plus 3500 calories to gain a pound. Most of us on this site have been eating considerably less than TDEE -- say 300-1000 calories less -- in order to lose weight. So if for the 3 days surrounding Thanksgiving (and subsequently the December holidays) we eat pretty much whatever we…

Don't skimp on the protein!
Turkey is soooo good for you! When in doubt, have another slice. Focus on extra servings of protein over carbs & sugar this holiday season. You'll feel satisfied longer and have many fewer regrets. Unless there is a medical reason against it, most of us can be eating .6-1g of protein per pound of lean body mass. That…

I don't want to be ripped; I want to be lean
It's about health (and mobility) as much as for looks. So I'm doing pilates. What's your goal physique? What are you doing to get it?

Slow weight loss is the best weight loss
Yesterday my new massage therapist said I was really well-toned, that she couldn't tell I'd just lost 50 pounds. She said I must've done it the "right" way -- slowly. Which I did... an average of 5-6 pounds a month for the first 9 months, and then a slow-down for the last 20 (in progress). I know there's a lot to be said…

Negative carb count?
Did you know that if the nutrition information for something has more FIBER than it has CARBS, then the data is wrong? Don't use those entries unless they're marked "NET CARBS." Net carbs = Carbs - Fiber The number cannot be less than 0.

Thoughtful THURSDAY
"Always desire to learn something useful." -- Sophocles It's never too late to change, and it starts with our mindset. Just because that's how something has always been doesn't make it relevant or true today. Are you in a learning state of mind? What's the best nutrition/eating myth you've debunked on your journey so far?

Weight notches up the day after exercise
Have you noticed? Regardless of calories, my weight seems to trend up a pound or two the day after I do pilates, then back down a couple of days later. I think it's water retention. Any insights? Any tricks to mitigate?
