Helene - good luck to your sister. I know I wouldn't be walking as well as I am if not for P/T!

Pam - hooray for the good news! I don't have a clue about the formatting. Does MFP have a forum for help issues?

    Any help here? https://myfitnesspal.desk.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1453170-known-issues-ios-app

I went to the endocrinologist today. Another thyroid biopsy coming up in May. Based on what she said today I wouldn't be at all surprised to find they want to take my thyroid out this year. I was hoping it would wait until I retire!

I have no idea why, but when this moved to page two, I'm back to normal formatting.

Maryanne, I hope you can hold off on the surgery. How much longer before you plan to retire?

Cool that your formatting fixed itself. My kind of computer problem! I plan to work full-time at least 4 more years. It doesn't sound like the surgery is a biggie but there is an overnight stay. I have always said I hoped to die without ever being in a hospital. I can sort of feel in my throat that the thyroid nodules are making my thyroid bigger and bigger. I knew it would likely have to come out someday. My aunt had the same thing. She did nothing about it, it grew to the size of a large softball, and eventually turned cancerous.

Pam-- I caused the super wide margin when I posted a link that was longer than usual.
What I have been doing is estimate where I should stop "typing" and hit the return so
that I can keep the info in a reasonable space. I would have corrected that post but it
had gone over an hour before I noticed it and could no longer edit it. When we fill this
page up, the posts on the next pages will have normal margins. Sorry! The person making
the entry has to format it so that it is reasonable and easy to read. It also happens if a
picture is posted which takes up more room than normal.

When I wrote this, I was on page 1. Now that we are on page 2, everything should be fine.

I was thinking "what should I have your breakfast tomorrow" and thought "Jean's oatmeal!!" LOL! Once I decided that, typing the spreadsheet for tomorrow was easy.

Maryanne--Oatmeal is the magic solution! Sometimes, I even eat it for an evening snack...which really fills me up! It is also beneficial for good cholesterol numbers.

O.K., on tonight's NBC News, there was a feature on the growing realization that fasting one day can help with weight loss. Basically, think of the number of calories permitted in a week. Choose one day and reduce it to around 600 calories. As a result, one day can be one in which you really eat more than you would normally. This results in people not being susceptible to binging when deprived of favorite foods for a long time but in a week they still eat the same number of calories permitted under the traditional diet.

The reason I perked up when I saw this was that I was experimenting with this approach. It is somewhat similar to the old Rotation diet in which low calorie days were rotated with higher calorie days so that the metabolism would not get lowered by consistently low-calorie days.

600 calories eh? I could do that on a day I was super busy but most days that would be tough. I like the concept though!

Just goes to show that everything old is new again. The 600 calorie fast is probably a variation of the rotation diet. when I get back to Sanibel, I'll be researching a new diet. I read an article about Dr. Mark Hyman's diet book. It incorporates more healthy fats and cuts carbs and sugar. I'll see if the local library has the book.

My sister and one of her daughters are having success with "The 17 Day Diet" which starts out as a low-carb, low-fat diet for the first cycle, then each successive cycle adds back more carbs and/or fat. You can repeat the first three cycles as many times as you like. When you are ready to transition to maintenance, you go to the fourth cycle. I think each cycle is supposed to last 17 days, hence the name. It does require you to cook, so Jean might not be interested. Pinterest has a lot of 17 Day Diet recipes and cheat sheets, if you are interested.

I got a good report at the doctor's office yesterday. The doc pronounced my bones fully healed and gave the OK for me to walk using only the boot, or I can wear something like an athletic shoe when using the walker. I have to continue on the oral antibiotic for another month, which I had hoped to discontinue, but that's not that big a deal compared to everything else I've had to handle. So I've been trying to walk more and use my scooter less, but it is still pretty painful regardless of which option I choose. I hope that improves quickly. It's worth the pain to have more freedom, but I'd enjoy it more without the pain!

    Cook? Not gonna happen.

Pam - glad you got such good news! Hopefully the pain will diminish over time.

Jean - I wasted an oatmeal packet this morning - used 3/4 cup of water and it was just soup. I forgot the directions don't work (for me anyway).

Finished the grocery store shopping today. We've got threats of snow and sleet this weekend! In April. In Maryland, Geesh!

The reason I perked up was that during this past week I remembered how I didn't get hungry when I had to do that one day prep for the bladder scope. I had the Quaker Weight Control oatmeal for breakfast but then just drank low sodium chicken and beef broth for the rest of the meals. I think the broth was 15 calories a serving and there were 4 servings in a box.

Maryanne--If you are talking about the 3/4 cup for the Quaker Weight Control oatmeal, the 3/4 cup refers to the combo of the oatmeal plus water. It isn't 3/4 cup of water. I never measure the water and oatmeal anymore. I just dump the oatmeal in the bowl and add water to the point it looks right.

Pam--Good news! Now to venture out using the appropriate supportive footwear.

Helene--I think the old rotation diet made sense and you are right that the old often comes back reworked.

Maryanne...I don't make oatmeal often but when I do, I got used to adding a spoon or two of chia seeds into it. It doesn't alter the taste and the chia seed swell when they get wet so it thickens the oatmeal up to a consistency that I like. And chia seeds are one of those healthy superfoods. I bought the chia seeds when I was making the recipe for chia seed pudding. I has a good sized bag so I figured I'd add them to the oatmeal. If I made smoothies (I don't), I could use them in those as well.

I put a request in at the local library for the Hyman book. There are other peole waiting so it may not come up for me before I leave. If not, I'll see if I can get it at home.

Pam...I hope as you're able to walk around more, the muscles build up and the pain lessens.

Oatmeal, okay, the box says use 2/3 cup water. The packet says empty the oatmeal and then fill the packet to the 3/4 cup fill line with water. I've never tried putting water in the packet. Maybe the packet doesn't really hold 3/4 cup but just says that. Strange! I just need to remember to use 1/2 cup!

There is a smart ones breakfast that used to come in a tray with 2 compartments. The directions said stir separately. They switched to a single compartment tray and the food is just mixed together but the directions still say stir separately.

Someone at these companies needs to read the instructions! Hee hee....

Today I'm planning eggs for breakfast, salad/turkey for lunch, small steak with small potatoes and vegetables for dinner and two 100-calorie snacks in the evening along with 1/2 orange.

It is COLD here. DH is at the stage with the tomato seedling that he needs to repot but normally he'd be able to start using the back porch. He doesn't have room for them under the lights in the basement. First time there has ever been this problem. Hopefully it will warm up by Monday. It's supposed to.

Weather on the East coast has been pretty strange this year. It looked like you were getting an early spring but now you have cold and perhaps snow. How weird is that? Meanwhile it's still lovely in FL. We actually had a couple of too warm days, up near 90. But I'm not complaining.

DH finished the bathroom floor repair/replacement he was doing for my sister. Now he has to put the toilet back in place. we had given her a toilet we replaced from our bathroom reno. It was in perfect shape but we replaced it with one of the higher profile models. We're at a life stage were higher is better. Hopefully the parts go in smoothly. we hope to head back to Sanibel tomorrow. Our original plans were to go home Thursday but the project was a little more extensive than planned and DH needed the extra time. My sister is a retired hair dresser so she'll give him a much needed hair cut before we leave. I had told him not to expect one because of her knee surgery but she feels she's well enough to do it for him. she wants to repay the favor of all the work he did for her and her recovery seems to be going pretty well. She starts PT at the hospital on Wednesday to work on the leg muscles that had weakened before the knee was replaced.

I weighed in this morning as I officially weighed in last Saturday for the start of this quarter. I lost five pounds. I went to the city today to get my nails done and get hair colored and styled. It has been a quiet birthday.

I don't know about anyone else's oatmeal; I just use the Quaker Weight Control oatmeal. I add flaxseed to mine as it is a good source of omega 3's for the heart.

It snowed last night and snowed again during the day and is supposed to be down around 15 tonight. Sometime, we might see Spring...about the time Summer is supposed to arrive. Past Summer was not that hot.

Jean, congrats on the 5 pound weight loss! You're doing a great job.

Weather all over the country has been weird this year. We hardly had any winter weather at all. February seemed warmer than March to me, at least the nighttime temperatures. Today has been cool and rainy, so I wasn't tempted to get out of the house at all.

I'm wearing my gym shoes and using the walker to get around today and that seems to be less painful so far. The walker allows me to not put full weight on the bad ankle, whereas the boot without the walker puts full weight on it. For the next week or so I plan to continue using the walker and if the pain improves I will gradually transition to using the boot more without the walker, letting the pain level guide me. My SIL is coming next weekend to stay for a few days and she has offered to push me around in the wheelchair for a little retail therapy, but I hope to be able to walk at least some of the time. I'm looking forward to doing some shopping since I literally haven't set foot in any store since before Christmas!

Pam--Your body and any pain is a good guide. It sounds as if you have a good plan in place. Retail therapy is definitely part of the plan!

I just assembled one of those mini-ellipticals I got from Amazon. It had great reviews. I just did 15 min at the lowest resistance. Yes, this thing gets the heart rate up and it is heavy. Stamina 55-1610 InMotion E1000 Elliptical Trainer has 2200+ reviews and a 4 star out of 5 rating.

Today is a low calorie day. I had a Vitalicious Vitatop for breakfast. It isn't super high in protein but it is filling.

Jean - congratulations on the 5-pound loss. WAY TO GO!

Pam - if the pain doesn't get better, did anyone suggest you transition from walker to crutch as your next step? I went from wheelchair to walker to two crutches to one crutch.

Helene - sounds like you had a good visit! My DH does not do plumbing. LOL!

Had my eggs this morning. Now I'm going to work on the spring newsletter!

We thought we were in the home stretch. They were down to the bathroom sink faucet replacement. It looked all done so they turned on the water and the valve blew off and sprayed water all over. They think they didn't have enough cement on the joint. They're letting things dry a bit and will try again. we may end up staying until morning depending on how long the repair takes. It makes more sense to dive home in daylight than to do it after dinner if he can't finish pretty soon.

Jean..5 pounds is great. I'll have to look up your mini elliptical.

Pam..I'm sure you'll enjoy the retail therapy. I wonder if where you're going has any of those motorized carts like they have in grocery stores?

This was a 600 calorie day, so tomorrow will be a normal 1200-1300 cal. day as will Tuesday. If I don't work Wednesday, I may lower the count for that day with the goal of Saturday being a high calorie day with a beloved food. Time will tell how long I do this. As I said, I'm experimenting.

This is some info on benefits of mini-ellipticals:
    http://woman.thenest.com/benefit-mini-elliptical-12598.html

I used it again this evening while watching an entire episode of a tv program on Netflix. It was on low resistance as I'm getting used to it. Supposedly, I got in the equivalent of around 5000 steps. This thing is great if you have knee problems as it is low impact. I'm using it now while sitting which is one way to use it.

I definitely work Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Jean - watching your experiment with great interest!

I lost most of the birthday binge weight this week. Whew!

I'm off to the vet this morning with Smokie and Lola. I haven't been (at least not with the cats) for awhile but now that winter's about over both the cats and I need to get our doctors visits in.

The sink repair is complete. The faucet itself was defective and was leaking. DH assumed he was doing something wrong. He called the company and went through the steps he's done. The rep said it sounded like the fucet was defective and DH should being it back to Home Depot. He told him to leave the under counter connections alone and just bing in the faucet. He gave him a case number and he had no trouble exchanging it. About 30 minutes of work when he got back from the store and the sink is operational. We'll have lunch here and start the drive him. It's about 2.5 hours home and since we do audio books, that's not a long ride to us.

Helene - that's really cool that you both listen to an audiobook!

Had no trouble with the cats at the vet. They were good as gold. The new office manager forgot to write down the appointment but luckily they hadn't filled the spot.

I got a couple photos of the new CROM cat. He didn't look very happy but supposedly they love him.

Helene--Glad the repair was done and that Home Depot was cooperative. Have a safe 2.5 hour drive home

Maryanne--You were fortunate the vet had an opening and that the cats cooperated. Good job on losing the birthday binge.

I did an hour on the mini-elliptical at a low setting.

I really enjoyed my NS freeze dried burger last evening. The house smelled like burgers for hours. I'll be so sorry when I use the last of those.

Today I'm planning: eggs, salad/turkey and NS chicken "pot pie". Then 2 snacks in the evening and 1/2 an orange. I actually found oranges that are sweet in our local stores. Usually the oranges are hit and miss but I haven't found a bad one of these yet. They are called Cara Cara oranges.

Work was slow but now it's heated up again. WAY too much to do in too little time. Have to force myself to take time for the treadmill and time for planning my food.

  • PamS53

I always liked the freeze dried burgers too. I thought they tasted pretty much like a real burger, after I learned how to prepare it. I used the deli thin buns and it was a pretty good substitute for a normal bun. I usually roasted thinly sliced zucchini coins to go with it, as a substitute for potato chips or fries and that was one of my favorite NS meals. The zucchini was easy to make and that was about the only way I liked it. I need to revisit that.

I'm enjoying walking despite the pain. I'm finding it more comfortable to use my gym shoes with the walker than using the boot. I think the pain is either diminishing or I'm getting used to it, as long as I don't overdo it. We are still doing wet to dry dressing changes on one of the wounds waiting for it to close. It's getting close, but is not quite there yet. I'm going to be left with a really ugly scar, but there's not much I can do about that at this point.

We learned late Sunday evening that one of our neighbors was seriously injured in a fall and is in the hospital in a coma. He is an international pilot for American Airlines and was on a layover in Madrid when it happened. His wife and daughter flew over to be with him, and various friends and family members are rotating in and out to provide support. Being a long-time employee of the airline, they literally have friends all over the world, and both he and his wife are originally from The Netherlands, with family still in that area. They are posting updates on The Caring Bridge website. He had emergency surgery the night it happened and has been in a medically induced coma since. They haven't given any details about how he fell, but from the severity of his injuries, it must have been pretty bad. He was with the copilot from the flight, who remained with him at the hospital until his wife was able to get there. American made all the arrangements to get his wife and daughter over there, and is having them stay at the crew hotel which puts them in contact daily with crews that are flying in and out, many of which they are already acquainted with. His daughter posted that American checks in with them daily and is really taking care of them. It's nice to know that they take such good care of their employees and their families in such a frightening situation. We've been neighbors for 22 years, and watched their kids grow up.

Pam--I am glad that you are enjoying the walking again and the gym shoes seem to work for you instead of the vet. I do hope your pilot neighbor recovers from the fall. It sounds as if American is very supportive.

Maryanne--I've never had the NS freeze dried burger, but I did have the Turkey and dressing entrée tonight. I've not had the "pot pie."

I worked today and was short on time to get to a microwave as I had taken the NS white bean/chili with me. I ate it without heating and it was acceptable. I guess I'm not a gourmet. I did another hour tonight on the elliptical from seated position. That makes 3 nights in a row; time will tell.

I hopped on the scales today for a midweek check. So far, no weight lost this week.

Not working today but was up at 6am and trash was put out. I'm now relaxing with coffee and a vitamuffin.

Just updated my NS order; I still get one every 3 months. I've been lazy this morning. I really debated going to the city for grocery shopping at WalMart but I've enjoyed relaxing.
