Jean - I get very nervous when I don't have calorie counts. Even our weekend dinners often come from an Omaha Steaks or Kansas City Steaks box which has the calorie count (or calorie count can be looked up n line).

I decided today will be "packet day". I'm probably going to go vote and spend the rest of the day working.

They didn't do much with Jack yesterday. The internist didn't feel that she wanted to do a repeat CT scan and biopsy. I guess she would have done it if I"d pushed but I decided to go with the expert opinion. I still worry his upper respiratory might turn into cancer like Willie's did but I guess there is only so much we can do. She wants to start him on claritin.

I'll have to look for that Stouffer's potato cup. I have a few NS loaded potato cups left but since I'm not buying NS now I'll be looking for a replacement. I checked further on what triggered counting visits on the site. I logged food first and then went to the home page. The visit was already counted. If I go to the home page first, I see it add the visit. So I guess it counts a visit every time you log in wherever you go on the site.

Helene, I think you are correct about how this site logs visits. I rarely go anywhere except this page, which I have bookmarked.

I'm getting out more and gaining confidence in my ability to get around safely. I just got home from having my nails done and that was a big hurdle for me as the lady who does my nails for years works out of her home, which has four steps to get to her front door. There is no rail so I was a little worried about losing my balance and falling, however, I managed without any issues. She helped me down the steps just to make sure, but I think I would have been fine without any help, too. I've also begun doing some light housework again, which makes DH happy since he's been doing all of it for the past three months. It feels good to be able to do more, although I've never enjoyed housework, lol!

My neighbor remains in a coma in Madrid. He is on a ventilator currently, but is scheduled to have a tracheotomy tomorrow or Friday as they don't like to keep someone on a vent for more than ten days or so. He has developed pneumonia, which is a complication, but they are keeping it in check with antibiotics. The doctors are keeping him in an induced coma until his intracranial pressure decreases. Currently it remains fairly high, with spikes from stimuli such as noise or touch. It sounds as if this will be a very long recovery process and have my doubts if he will ever be able to return to work as an airline pilot.

Pam - I'm glad to hear you're getting around so well! But very sorry about your neighbor.

DH and I both voted today. We had to go to a new place but it was easy to find. I only did early voting once before and went on the first day - mistake. Today on the other hand was in and out. Quick and clean. I felt sorry for all the (I assume volunteers) working for 8 days to cover early voting. DH thinks they probably just work short shifts. I wonder if they can get enough people to give them short shifts. And there are about 10 such locations around the city. No need to show ID here which probably speeded things up. Plus we got the ballots in the mail ahead of time which also I imagine speeded things up.

I've got to buckle down and work. We were informed late yesterday that our outlines for the client seminar are due Monday. So instead of having two weekends to do this I have only until Monday. Yikes!

I've got my food and spreadsheet laid out for the day. Guess I'd better eat breakfast and get to work!

Pam..It sounds like you're making great strides at regaining your independence. I think going up those stairs with no railing would have been a bit scary. I'm glad you had no problem doing it.

Your neighbor's situation sounds very sad. Like you, I doubt he'd ever be able to go back to work as a pilot. DH developed pneumonia after his heart attack and was intubated and sedate for a couple of days. In his case. it was to take strain off his heart. They probably have him on high doses of oxygen, antibiotics and steroids. I hope his family starts to see improvement. How long ago was the accident?

Maryanne...Good luck getting your work completed. You strike me as someone who works well under pressure. I ended up bringing the Robb book back. I read about half and found myself picking it up and putting it down so I guess I wasn't that into her. In the meantime, I started reading the new Deaver book. I'm halfway through that in just a few days. he's one of my favorite authors. It's amazing how many twists he can put in a plot.

Jean..How was your day? I'm working on starting to pack up paperwork and emptying cupboards of unopened boxes of food which I'll take home. I tend to stock up on new types of GF foods when I see them. I found several I'd never seen back home so I stocked up.

I'm reading the last Lucas Davenport book (John Sandford) because the next one is soon to come out! Introduced me to the concept of a Juggalo Gathering. Geesh, it takes all kinds. Apparently these are fans of the Insane Clown Posse that have these huge gatherings every year, paint themselves up, listen to rap music, etc. Must be an upper midwest thing.

I do like Deaver - he's certainly in my top 20 or so!

Is there anything that isn't bad for us? This week it was dryer sheets and benadryl. I've had to give up antihistamines because it starts my heart racing. If I have to give up benadryl too that would be bad news.

"Works well under pressure". Great way to describe a life long procrastinator. We make our own pressure often times. LOL!

I need to finish up my grocery shopping - including picking up Jack's meds at the Giant - before the thunderstorms roll through.

Been trying to explain to DH who Prince is. My other half is SO not up on popular culture of any decade past the 60's. Hee hee...

My food for the day is chosen and the spreadsheet printed.

The Quaker Super Grains hot cereal had an odd taste. I'd have to say it's not worth the 50 extra calories over the weight control.

  • Helene610
    Helene610 Posts: 2,862 Member
What was odd about the taste? Do you think you got a bad batch? Maybe some raisins would improve the taste?

It looks like we're going to miss the rain. Parts of FL are going to get it but we have another beautiful day here. Maryanne..I guess you must be getting some of that storm system. I'm assuming it must be the one that flooded Houston. I'm doing laundry and more sorting and packing today. We usually end up doing all the packing in a couple of days and that's so exhausting. we have 10 days left so I'm trying to do some of the preparation every day to spread it out. It would be nice to start our drive without being exhausted.

The advertised flavor was honey almond and that was what I was expecting to taste. Thinking about it, my guess is the taste of one or more of the grains - most of which I don't ordinarily eat - probably overpowered the honey almond.

We supposedly have rain on the way but it hasn't started yet. The Savannah has been hanging around the yard all day so far. I finished my grocery shopping so it can rain all it wants now!

Our rain has finally left the building, to paraphrase a famous expression. I think we got about 5-6 inches over the past week, although other parts of the state got a lot more. Today it is sunny and warm,me hitch is very welcome.

Helene, my neighbor's accident was 13 days ago. His daughter posted today that he is showing improvement, but is still being kept in an induced coma. The doctors there keep telling them "tiempo y pacencia" which translates to time and patience. I think it will be a long road back to health for him. Our neighborhood has organized a prayer circle for him on Sunday evening, inviting many friends and former neighbors as well as current neighbors. There isn't a lot we can do for them from here, other than caring for their animals, but all of us can pray for them.

Yesterday I made a pie that I'm taking to a birthday party tonight. I didn't feel up to making and decorating a birthday cake yet, but this pie is pretty easy and delicious. It is a lemon mousse pie, made with lemon curd, white chocolate, cream cheese, and whipped cream. I always cheat by using store bought lemon curd, so it comes together quickly and easily. I'll garnish it with lemon peel curls and fresh raspberries. I've missed the last couple of birthday celebrations, so I am really looking forward to this evening.

No one has rated the supergrains cereal yet on Amazon.

On the Quaker site (where they could control the number of low ratings included if they were so included) it has 4 stars but couple "tastes awful" comments as well: http://www.quakeroats.com/products/hot-cereals/InstantOatmeal/Supergrains/Apples_and_cinnamon.aspx

Sammy Dubbs loves chicken cat food and chicken baby food so I thought he'd go nuts for rotisserie chicken. But no.. LOL!

We changed Jessicat's pain meds. She's on tramadol. I looked up cats and side effects. Apparently they are rare (often true with cats - lucky them). One listed was hallucinations. How would you know they were having hallucinations? Inquiring minds want to know......

Boy the produce at our stores is pathetic. They had a big sale on cantaloupes. DH loves cantaloupe. There were two produce guys standing there chatting while I inspected some of the cantaloupes, finding nary a ripe one in the bunch. Of course neither employee asked what I was looking at. Then I checked out the Very Veggie salad mix. All the ones in front were already brown. I assume they did that on purpose instead of just tossing. Geesh! It just goes on and on like that. If I find a few things that look edible and aren't already past their "sell by" date I take them. OTOH I now have two stores that have great chopped pepper/onion mixes. For my eggs and my NS burgers! Saute'ing those makes me feel like a chef (yeah, it doesn't take much, I know).

I'm making real progress on the stuff I have to have done for work by Monday. I think I'll make it. Yeah! One of the owner's sons is now working for us and he's in charge of collating the outlines and getting them to Kinko's to be printed. I guess that's why we've got such an early deadline this year.

The Savannah is visiting our yard most days. DH swears he thinks he saw it with its head out the window of its owner's car when it drove past one day. I remain dubious but I guess it's possible.

The Decorah eaglets are getting really big already: http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

Tuffy is lying here between my keyboard and my screen. He's way too big for the space. Luckily I have a desk drawer I can pull out to put the keyboard on.

Haven't heard from my sister lately. No response to recent emails which isn't unusual (she suffers from depression). Their NJ house listing is showing as no longer on the market so I assume the buyer signed the contract.

I need to call my dad and see how he's doing in his planning to get moved back home.

Looks like a quiet day here today. So far we've been to church and stopped at CVS. I have to fill a couple of prescriptions before we head home next week. DH wanted to make some prints of photos for my sister and was using the Kodak machine. The darned thing froze up half way through his selections. He tried several times with the same results and the manager said the machine was acting up. So we'll have to wait until we get to SC and try again there. I'm making lists of things that have to be done (stop newspaper, Comcast and forward mail), laundry. cleaning and packing. Meals are going to be whatever we have left in the freezer and refrigerator. If we run out, we'll be eating out. I wouldn't mind if that happened. We have 8 days left to get things wrapped up here.

Helene - good luck on the packing up and getting things done!

Pam - that pie sounds really good!

I lost a pound and a half last week. I'm one pound away from not being obese. I'd love to make Hopkins take that "diagnosis" off their portal. Of all things to bother me....

The newsletter and seminar outline are both done. YEAH! I want to reread the outline before emailing it in but otherwise I'm good. Now maybe I can get some billable work done.

Sammy has become my best bud at dinner time. He is totally interested in what we're eating but politely sits by my chair and rubs against my feet until I give him a bite. Most of the time he discovers he's not interested. Last evening? Pork loin? Must have smelled better to him than it tasted as he took one taste and walked away. PIcky little dude!

Maryanne, the pie was really good! My friends and I enjoyed it and it looked pretty as well. It's a good one to make for a gathering because it looks impressive but is really pretty easy to make.

Our friend who had the accident remains in a coma in Madrid, but the report is that he is beginning to open his eyes and make more purposeful movements. His intracranial pressure has come way down and his pneumonia is improving, so that is all very hopeful. American Airlines has offered a private chartered medical jet for when he is well enough to be moved, which we hope is soon. Last night our neighborhood held a prayer circle for him and it was really nice because many of our friends and former neighbors who have moved away came for it. It was videotaped and will be put on a private YouTube channel for them to view. I've heard two different versions of what happened, so I don't know which is correct. One is that he tripped while exiting a taxi and the other was that he was walking on a wet cobblestoned street and tripped and fell. Either way, it must have been a very hard fall. His co-pilot who was with him is credited with saving his life by recognizing immediately the seriousness of his condition and getting him immediate medical attention. He stayed with him at the hospital until Eric's wife could get there, and has flown back over a couple of times to check on them.

I am continuing to walk using the boot. I'm finding it more comfortable, but now that our weather is warmer, it is very hot to wear this 5 pound boot all day! I can take it off if I'm sitting down, but it's a pain having to strap it on again every time I need or want to get up to do something. I'll be so happy when I don't need it anymore.

Pam - isn't it amazing how a moment can change everything? Many of us (including you) know that on one level but your neighbors are dealing with it at a whole other level. There but for the grace of god.... as my late mother would have said.

Good evening, everyone! I've been missing because my wireless router died and had to be replaced. Today was the first time available for the telephone company technician to come and install it. I've spent almost a week without the internet. Now that I have a new router, I have to change the password on all my gadgets that use the internet. I had to cancel a day of work as I was told that the technician would be there between 8 and 5. He called at 8 and said he was coming. In the meantime, the school called and said they really needed me if the technician arrived early in the morning. I only missed an hour of work but will be credited for a full day.

Jean..That's good that things worked out between the tech's arrival and being able to work today. It drives me crazy to be offline that long. I'm glad you're back in touch.
Pam..There was an article in Sunday's News Press about a 35 yr old man who had an infection. He took a few days of antibiotics, felt better and stopped taking them. Several days later, the infection came roaring back and he developed double pneumonia and had to be placed in a medically induced coma. During that time, he suffered a heart attack and the doctor's figured he was without oxygen 10 minutes. 2 Neurologists told his family he was in a vegetative state and wouldn't recover. His wife refused to accept it and said she wanted to give God more time to work a miracle. And that's what she got. Her husband came out of the coma, recognized family and could say a few words. he has a long recovery ahead but is making progress. So even when the news is very dire, there is hope. The fact that your neighbor is making purposeful movement is a really good sign. Here's the link in case you or your neighbor'd family want to read it. They might find hope and inspiration reading Jake's story.

The family got great news today. He is off the sedation, also off the ventilator and breathing tube, his eyes are open, and he's able to cough and clear his lungs on his own. The doctor greeted them by saying, "I don't have good news today, I have GREAT news!" It seems he has turned a big corner at this point and is doing really well.

Helene--I didn't miss being online as much as I expected. I missed the internet support for Netflix, my transactions online..and checking credit cards frequently for misuse, etc. I wondered how you all were doing but that was all beyond my control, so I just kept busy.

Pam--That is super news. He seems to be on his way back and doing well. We just hope that he continues on this path to recovery. Miracles do happen!

Jean - obviously you are valued! Always nice to know.

    Pam - super news indeed!

I actually still pay for dial up in order to keep my email address that I've had for almost 30 years and the CROM email address that I've had for probably 25 years. The real question would be whether I could remember how to access it without internet to query to remind me. LOL!

I filled in this morning and drove around and fed several of the feral colonies for the first time on my own. The future is uncertain because their caretaker has cancer.

Just had hearty grain cream of wheat with raisins and skim milk and now I have a conference call.

Pam..That's wonderful news about your neighbor's progress. It sounds like he'll be ready for that medical flight home pretty soon. My SIL had a friend who went into premature labor last year while visiting Portugal. She was 6 months pregnant with twins and had medical clearance to make the trip. The babies were born and weighed under 2 pounds. The little boy only survived a week or two but his sister survived. The parents were stuck in Portugal for a few months waiting for the baby to weigh enough and be medically able to survive the flight. Their insurance company wasn't willing to cover the cost of the medical flight and were telling the parents to take the fragile baby on a commercial flight. They backed down after extreme pressure from the public and local politicians. At least your friend doesn't have to worry about the flight. That is such a huge gift after seeing what this couple and their baby went through.

I stopped by Walmart today, something I almost never do. They are now selling 5-day JC kits which are being resold by a few people on ebay. I wondered where they were coming from so I googled it. Much cheaper at the source ($45). The clerk said "what is that"? When I explained she said "there's food in there?" LOL!

They also had something new from Jimmy Dean Delights. Three flavors of egg frittatas (spell check wants to change that to fritters - I wish). Highish in calories - 240-270 I think - but looked interesting so I bought a box. http://www.jimmydean.com/products/delights I've never seen most of the items they are showing.

I also picked up some Arctic Zero to try. I had recently found a couple of the 150 calorie flavors which I have to admit were pretty bad. Before I gave up entirely I decided to try the 300 calorie flavors that I could find.

Had NS soup and a small salad for lunch.

I decided to do a 3-day JC kit from today through Friday.

I had the cranberry almond barscotti for breakfast. Good but not real filling. For lunch I had the swedish meatballs and a small salad.

The new Walmart 5-day kits have less in them than the prior 5-day kits which I think were sold at Sam's club. They dropped the shakes (which I have a pile of since I never used) and the anytime bars (which I will miss but a South Beach bar should be a pretty good sub).

A rainy post election day here. Luckily the city of Baltimore did not elect as its new mayor a former mayor who resigned in disgrace but disgracefully she was apparently a close second. It was only the primary but for Baltimore city the primary is essentially the election. We're not in the city but the surrounding suburbs are of course deeply affected by what goes on in the city as are many of our clients.

Maryanne--At WalMart, I have seen two different Nutrisystem kits plus the JC kit. It has poured the rain here also, and absentee balloting has started for those not able to vote in the Primary in May.

Those on the State insurance who are not on Medicare are being faced with an extra $500 deductible if they fail to reduce high cholesterol and overweight to a certain point, with emphasis on the waist measurement.

I had to go on Medicare when my company cancelled its group coverage. Because my premium wasn't being taken from a social security check my premium amount wasn't "grandfathered". So I was in that group last year that was threatened with a huge increase. Primarily because of that as soon as I turned 66 I applied for spousal social security. Now my Medicare premium will come out of that and I won't be in the group any more that can be hit with unexpected premium increases. I'll wait to take my own social security benefit until I hit 70.

I have to read and comment on employer's "wellness" programs all the time. I think most of them are hooey but that can't be one of my comments. LOL! They're asking for legal opinions not man on the street opinions.

I've got my food laid out for the day and my spreadsheet printed. It's supposed to rain here through tomorrow so not sure when I'll finish my grocery shopping. I don't have a lot left to do so probably can just grab a raincoat and an umbrella and do it!

Maryanne--One of the people affected by the State's Wellness "incentive" said despite them having to fork over $500 more that she would prefer to have the choice of her lifestyle, diet, etc. This person doesn't have to worry about the overweight part of it but high cholesterol might be a factor.

I didn't work today so I worked "unpaid" by sorting through all kinds of things. I have a tendency to hold on to paper "proof" just in case it is needed. Would you believe that I had a file of info that was 12 years old?

After the five pound loss, I've been holding at the same point. This week, I decided to loosen up some and focus again next week. Dr. Oz is having a great segment on artificial ice cream, etc. making us fatter because it confuses the body which then seeks more to satisfy the missing ingredient in the artificial food that the body likes in natural product. I know that Skinny Cow just makes me want to eat the whole package, and some NS desserts do also.

I would love to see Dr. Oz tomorrow. Marie Osmond will be on it to discuss her battle with depression and bulimia.

Jean - you and DH can do a bonfire with all your paper. I overreact to DH's paper piles. I save very little (except for CROM).

I'm fine with Skinny Cow ice cream.

Today's JC food is not keeping me very full. I think subbing 8 ounces of skim milk for a protein shake is part of the issue.

Maryanne--Perhaps the JC food will work for you if you add your protein shakes. I'm a great believer in maximizing the amount of protein you can get within the calorie limit.
