@blitzbis I work in customer service in a supermarket for the last 25 years the thing is we have just hired a few special needs adults so I was asked to take two under my wing and train them on carts. As the regular guys have no patience and are putzs. Oh lets see I wanted to die. But I showed my newest helpers the ropes and my store manager is like you have the patience of a saint I'm like you owe me. I can only hope they don't learn any bad habits from the teenagers.

I love the name thing with your sister :D That is too cute!

So back to names I named my daughter Emily Rose after my great grandmother who was the last of 21 children . She hated her name her name was Emma and she always said they should have named me s**t last name was Rosenbach. Thus Emily Rose I picked it out when I was 12 and was fortunate enough to have one child and a girl.

I agree I like my seniors I find them amusing this lady came in today and I was like I love your hair and she's like Honey it's a wig when you get to be my age you can be anyone you want just by changing your hair. I so want to be like that when I get older. LOL

@2020pinktogo wow, customer service. I bow down to you. Rarely do you get to serve happy customers!
I'm impressed that your company hired some special needs workers. Everyone likes to feel useful. It should be interesting the new things they learn from the others, however.

I'm loving this name thing. That's one of the first things I ask our patients. One of them was a twin and patents had only one name picked out so my patient was named by the nurse!

Well I don't know what I did in my sleep but my knee is killing me and I can even see the veins popping out all over. It is a good thing I wear pants to work LOL I'll just keep trying on shoes til I find a pair that is the most comfortable and if it's hot pink so be it. ;)

I keep thinking I should get back to my daily walks. I felt so much better when it was a daily routine. However, the heat and humidity has been terrible. I was looking forward to summer, now I want winter back.

Hello! I am another newbie drafted by @2020pinktogo . :-) Thanks for the invite! Looking forward to getting to know all of you, some of you a bit better (ie: @blitzbis ).

My name is Danielle. I've always liked it, and never thought it was difficult until I was grown up and encountered many people who would call me Donelle, Diane, Daniel. Oh, well.

I live in Seattle, am in my late 40s, and am lucky enough to be retired! When we moved up here a year and a half ago, DH said he made enough money that I didn't have to work if I didn't want to. Since I had to quit my job for the move, I thought I'd give not-working a try. So far, I love it!!! XD We have chosen to be childfree, and I have a pet rat. ~( 8:>

Right now we're ending our trip to Maine with DH's family. I fly home early tomorrow, then we have some friends visiting and in Aug my sister and a niece come up. *whew* I love traveling and having visitors, but it will be nice to get back to my normal schedule.

Well, enough about me. I'll be checking in again soon!

After a frustrating morning (student protests meant I could get to my knee rehab session - I did a beachfront run instead - then I went to work on my off day as some paperwork was due and I needed signatures from people due back from leave today, only to find they hadn't come in) I had a wonderful day. Brunch at one of our favourite coffee shops with my two best friends, their kids and my little brother (ok, he isn't really but he acts like it and he is dating one of the said best friends) and then we spent the afternoon looking for animals at the national park. Saw lion, elephant, kudu, zebra, warthog, jackal, hare, etc. So much fun and less than an hours drive away... I love South Africa.

Oh, I heard recently that many foreigners do not consider South Africa to be part of Africa. Do any of you have an opinion on that?

I see Africa it's just Africa. Doesn't matter if it says South :)

I would love to be retired. That will never happen. I married an older man and my daughter is a diabetic I am the insurance. My goal is to stay where I am til my daughter graduates grad school . Then maybe do something I like for the rest of my time on this earth. Lol. We shall see if I can do this.

@CaptainBoing Your national park sounds incredible. Africa is Africa to me. I'm not a world traveler or a geography buff so I'm not familiar with other continents and/or countries. Even as a teacher I spent so much time on reading, writing, and math (standardized tests) that we didn't have much time to look at the world.

@JanolaBarbara welcome aboard! I don't think people today understand basic grammar rules. My last name is Crye and for some reason that silent "e" throws people! The travels sound fun, but you lost me on the rat. I must say though that after some thought it's actually perfect in that it's easily portable. What made you choose the rat?

@NewOR2015 where in Texas are you? I'm in east Texas almost to the Louisiana border. Most of my relatives are here too though I do have a cousin living in Germany for a few more years (husband is in the Air Force)

@CaptainBoing sound like a great attitude. So many people who would go into work on their off day to get signatures from people who didn't show up, have your therapy session interrupted but still consider it a good day is someone who really be knows how to roll with the punches. The zoo sound awesome. I guess I have never thought about it, but of course South Africa is part of Africa. Maybe people don't understand the difference between countries and continents.

@2020pinktogo I'm with you sometime retirement seems far away. However as I am seeing my 74 year of father struggle to find a job, I'm doubling down on my savings for the future!

I had a great day today. Had a therapist out today so I had to do group. I usually find that more enlightening and rewarding than my usual paper pushing. That being said, I don't think I could do it as often as the full time therapists do, really taxing on the emotional reserves! I did get my walk in and went to a session of cryotherapy. Not sure how beneficial it is for real, but I always feel better for a few days afterwards.

Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!

My daughter as she is a research scientist wanted a rat. She also wanted her mother to baby sit it. LOL She got a kitten last year instead and her grandmother and I said we would take her on if something happened. I could not say I would do that with the rat. I don't even like guinea pigs or hamsters.

I am giving myself a star on the calendar today. ;) I just spent 2 hours assisting my husband fixing his bathroom toilet. I did not yell I did not even roll my eyes. I will not understand why we buy new parts to use only some of them and reuse the old ones. then he goes we need a smaller screwdriver and comes back with one of mine a set he said he had no idea what I was talking about when I asked if he knew where they went. My first set of tools were red those my hubby made off with. Second set was yellow my dad made off with most of those. Now my tools are pink and purple. they are not as nice as my other sets but they are staying put. LOL ;)

    Til tomorrow my friends, sue

Rats make great pets! I was cuddling with my friend's last night. She makes the cutest little noises snuggling in your neck. I can't get one because you have to have the rat first, and I have the cat first! Plus, my Labrador is not the most gentle and the smell would drive my snake crazy.

@2020pinktogo Research scientist? That sounds awesome. What field?

Our National Parks are amazing. We have private game reserves as well, but the national parks are much more accessible financially. They even have a cheaper rate for South Africans! I love zoos (I work in one) but it is so much better in the reserve. You have to drive around looking, there is no guarantee you will find animals but they are in their natural habitat.

I am very proudly African. Here, that normally means someone of black skin, but my opinion is that if you were born and raised in the African continent, you are African. I may be first generation, with European ancestory, but this is home and always will be.

@CaptainBoing Chemistry she has so many things she is working on. Right now she and I think 3 or 4 others are trying to find a marker in urine for Autism so the kids don't have to go through so many battles of neurological testing. They have moved onto testing her mice which I'm sure all have names.

When she worked at the Laser Lab for Energetics she was working on a dye to detect cancer in an MRI machine. When I say WOW she's like it's not a big deal you don't look at a MRI and say wow look what Bob made you just say it's a MRI machine. Now when I go have tests done like April when I had my mammogram done I looked at everything differently and said WOW same thing with my colonoscopy when they were pulling out everything they were going to use I was thinking WOW someone had a great Idea.

I am mainly German with a touch of Dutch but my Great Grandmother on my father's side was Native American Indian. I guess my grandfather looked the most Indian and that was when he was tan none of the kids or grandkids or for that matter great grandchildren do. I most identify with my Indian heritage. My sister says the same thing though she also says she knows there is some black in our lineage as she has curly hair on steroids and what her hairdresser calls it can't be written. LOL

@2020pinktogo its amazing our our "girl tools" end up being the most useful. I have a pink set now and it seems to be the one we use 90% of the time (mainly because it gets put back in it's pink case and back where it belongs. Great job on fixing the toilet. Even better on not needing marital therapy afterwards. Sometimes my husband swears he can hear me rolling my eyes. So thankful for your daughter's research. WHen I was working in the school district I had lots of Autism spectrum kiddos. Very difficult, but also some of the most rewarding since they are so concrete and react well to schedules etc.

@CaptainBoing who would have ever thought snuggling with a rat would be exciting? But I think you are right, you would drive the poor snake crazy having a live rat in the house that was off limits. Plus, what would the poor rat think if it saw the snake eating "family members". "Gee, I wonder what Frank did to upset master? I need to be more cautious".

@NewOR2015 I haven't ridden the train from Rusk to Palestine in ages. But I remember it fondly as a kid. I don't get to Austin much unless I'm visiting family in San Antonio and then it's just a pass through. Love that area though. Too bad it takes us about 6 hours to get there!

Today I'm catching up on things at the office. Fingers crossed that I get my walk and my strength training in today.
    See ya soon

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

A bit more about me: 6 years ago I discovered that I had food sensitivities, so I avoid gluten, dairy, and sugar. Gluten makes me feel the worst, so it's the one I am the most vigilant avoiding. But, after a terrible GI incident in May, I decided it was time to get serious and kick out the dairy. Overall, I've done alright this trip, but not 100%. It'll be nice to be home and eat 'clean' again (and have a more settled tummy).

@CaptainBoing and @2020pinktogo -- Yes! Glad there are other people who appreciate ratties as pets! They are cute, affectionate, and very smart. I have been able to train them to respond to their names, come when I call, and do a few tricks. I plan on training my next colony to do a rat-sized agility course! The only downside is their short lives. They give me so much love and happiness in their 2-3 years.

@blitzbis -- How did today go? Get your exercise in? I am looking forward to taking a good, long walk tomorrow. I first thought of having a rat as a classroom pet, as I used to be a middle school science teacher. But, rats do better in a calm environment, and a classroom of tweens is not always calm or quiet! XD So, I decided to have them as a real pet, as I really wanted something furry to come home to. After my first pair I was hooked. :-)

@CaptainBoing -- I've been to Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt) and I consider South Africa as Africa. We toyed with the idea of visiting South Africa on that trip, but couldn't fit it in. We did safaris in T and K and loved it!!!

@NewOR2015 -- I hope you make it to Seattle. It's a great city! Not the best public transportation, but I love the green, mountains, and all the water.

Today I am flying back home from the east coast. Drove from Bar Harbor, ME to Boston, MA yesterday. We met with an old friend of my husband's for dinner, then up early today to catch the plane. DH flies back day after tomorrow. Pretty much spending all day either in the air or at airports. I am in the middle a 4hr layover in SF. I am very proud of the fact that I had a diet coke and cobb salad (no cheese!) at the airport!!

Well I didn't exercise today once again I assisted hubby on the fixing of the toilet. Only to have him him curse it's still leaking. The good thing is was my only goal for today was I didn't kill my hubby and he is still with us. Lol. Well tomorrow is a new day. As long as there are no toilets tomorrow all will be good.

Well, I got my walks in (2 15 minute walks through the day) and I did my 7 minute workout app at the house. Ate great until dinner when I bought a small pizza and ate on the way home thereby breaking two cardinal rules.... Don't eat when distracted and don't hide what you eat. Granted I am dressing up here.
I guess you can say that I am lucky in that I currently don't have medical problems due to my eating but I can't imagine they are too far away. Sometimes I just want to pop myself for my dining choices and the next I want to say it's ok, Cindy tomorrow or even the next meal is anew start.
That is what I am saying to myself now. I'm thankful I feel miserable after eating like i did and even more thankful that I threw 1/2 of the pizza away.
Tomorrow is a new day! Good night all!

@2020pinktogo That sounds like such a fascinating career! My friends brother in law is a chemistry lecturer and it is always so much fun to hear about the stuff he gets his students involved in.

@JanolaBarbara Kenya is one of my dream destinations in Africa, along with Zanzibar, Madagascar and Mauritius! Mostly I end up traveling inside South Africa based on which competitions I want to compete in or seminars I want to attend.

I am having an amazing week. It is the last week of school holidays so a bunch of my friends are bringing their kids to visit me at work. Part of my job includes showing people around at times so I get to share my passion with excited children and often interested adults! Yesterday I had two different groups which kept me busy all day. Then we had Jui Jitsu (60 minutes of beautiful technique with the most amazing choke! I so wish I could try it out in full rolling, but another 7 weeks till that is allowed.) Ended off the day with sushi supper and a long chat with one of my best friends while her boyfriend is away for work. Today is feeding and cleaning day with the snakes, then a swim, coffee with my pastor's teenage daughter to hear all about their month in the UK and evening fitness class!

It sounds like everyone is having interesting days. I am here with my 83-yr-old mom. She is doing better physically and mentally but still doesn't want to go anywhere or do anything. It's my summer vacation, and we're in the house doing pretty much nothing. She has time and money. We could go to Seattle and visit my cousins! I've never been and would love to go. She has been there, doesn't remember it, and doesn't want to go. :(

@NewOR2015 I use to be able to convince my mom to walk with me or to just go out garage saling as I love colored glass. I love depression glass but it's hard to find and people want so much for it that now I'm like if it's pink and it's pretty it just may go home with me. I haven't done that in years though. Now it' s like all my time is wrapped up around my parents and part of me thinks hmmm one day will I regret not having a vacation or time to myself. I don't know I just don't know. Probably not as I don't dwell on all the years I was heavy it's just a part of me.

So tonight I am going to do some form of exercise and then I am going to take a really long bath and just soak until I turn into a prune.

    Have a great day everyone!

ahhhhh.... so good to be home. Still a bit tired, but I'll recover in a few days. Went on a good, long walk this morning. Did about 5+ miles! I know I'll feel sore tomorrow, but I really needed it. Going to have dinner with a friend and watch the Metropolitan Opera's La Boeheme at the movie theater. I already looked at the menu, chose what I'm going to eat (no gluten or dairy), and have it logged! Also, I have to pick up DH at midnight tonight. :-(

@NewOR2015 -- My mother is younger than yours, but she also doesn't like going anywhere, especially after her husband died, so it's been years since she's been anywhere. I've even offered to buy her tix to come and visit me, but she doesn't want to. :-( It hurts a little, but I have to realize it's her problem (she does have some mental problems) and try not to take it too seriously.

@CaptainBoing -- Sounds like you really enjoy your job! Glad you get to share your enthusiasm with others, young and old. How many snakes do you have, and what kinds? As a rat-lady, I know you probably feed them pinkies or more grown feeder rats. My current rat is a rescue from a feeder rat colony. She'll be 3 in Aug and has never learned to fully trust me, but I am happy with how well she's doing, especially considering feeder rats don't live very long!

@blitzbis -- Congrats on getting your walks in! I am so impressed by your will power; I would've totally eaten the entire pizza. Can't believe you threw half away!! My newest positive self-talk mantra is "I am not the enemy." I always feel that I am constantly battling my body, punishing it for being this big. I am trying to see diet and exercise as ways to love myself. I still need a lot of work in that department.

So my goal this summer was to drop 5-10 lbs not a huge goal but I am not even to where I kicked off last winter. I still have to lose 2 lbs to get there. Last Summer I was so driven I exercised like a crazy woman twice a day and now I'm exhausted. Now I blame the weather as it's so hot and in the winter I couldn't wait for Summer. though I have to say last summer I was wearing pants and was comfy and this year we are in a drought and it's HOT so hot that no one wants to walk the park. I feel like one of those weather whiners. LOL

Well I have to get ready for work til later. sue

I'm still avoiding the scale because I know I won't like what I see. I did well for almost a year and then last spring break I let up and never quite got back. I know once I get serious about eating right and exercising it will work again, and I will feel much better. Being at my mom's house isn't the best for me. Once I get to go to my home and not go back and forth so much, I know I will be do better. Lots of talk, right?

@JanolaBarbara I know what you mean about enjoying being home. I love traveling and visiting but it sure is nice to get back to your own bed! It's nice to have a routine! Isn't it so difficult raising parents these days? I keep telling mine their life would be much easier if they would just come live with us, but they are stubborn little boogers and want to stay around their friends, family and church. They love to travel, though, just don't have the money to do it. I guess we all have our little difficulties with family! The people I work with laugh at me because they say if they just drive behind me, they could get a free meal. Want some M&M's. Buy a pack, eat one or two and throw one out the window. Twix.. Puffy cheetos the same. Sometimes the will power works and sometimes it doesn't.

@2020pinktogo and @NewOR2015 I know what you mean about struggles. It seems like I can eat well for a few days and then BLAMMO, I'm back on the aforementioned cheetos, pizza, beer wagon. It doesn't take me as long to get off the wagon, but I keep losing the same 3lbs. I had hoped by my cruise (64 days away) that I would be down in the 220's, but now, i'll be happy if I'm in the 250's again.

    Have a great day everyone!

@2020pinktogo I used to exercise in the morning, but now with an hour and 10 min commute to work, I have to do it during the work day. I know MANY people get up earlier than I do (545) but I just can't make myself do it.
I bet you will have a great day at work! Now you don't have to exercise when you get home. WTG
