Third Quarter of 2016: We Can Do This!!

I thought that recipe sounded familiar. I made it a couple of times and it was delicious. Pam..I think the a la cart plan includes frozen now but you'd have to check to be sure. If I ever go back to NS, I'd do a la cart. I finished the last of my JD sausage frittata. I liked it but I have a hard time finding anywhere that sells them. I found one box in a Walmart 20 miles away from home.0
-
Helene--Hopefully you will be able to find the sausage frittata. It is so difficult when you have something you really enjoy but the store no longer carries it.
I had the Southwestern eggbeaters and a slice of Canadian Bacon for breakfast.
Yesterday, I went to the city to see a movie. Normally, the theater complex is freezing but the place was packed and with the 99 degree temps, the AC kept it comfy but it was far from its normal freezing.0 -
I got great lab results today. My white blood count is below normal but that has been that way for years. What I am most pleased with are the results that have direct relationship to the heart. The Total Cholesterol has gone from 226 to 186 or in normal range. The HDL or good cholesterol is higher than normal or average; the LDL or bad cholesterol is definitely within normal limits as are the Triglycerides. Now for a late lunch of Swanson canned white chicken breast and salad.

Guess it is just me. Hope all are doing well. I am making progress one day at a time. It all adds up.0

We've made a quick trip down to Houston to see our nephew and his wife and son before they leave tomorrow for two years in France. Today is also DH's birthday, so I've baked a cake for him and I think we'll be making some ice cream to go with it. Lots of activities today.
Jean, great news on the awesome numbers from your blood work! My total cholesterol came back at 217, but all of the components were in the normal range, so I'm not sure what the doctor will recommend. I'm not exercising right now due to my foot, so I suspect that is why it went above 200 again.0 -
Jean - I hope you enjoy the movie! That dessert sounds like it could be good.
Pam - I'm the oddball wrt NS frozen. I'm not any more crazy about most of it than the ss. But working both into my diet plan does work for me. I do love the frozen french toast.
I finally weighed myself today. This binge "only" cost me 6 pounds. Could certainly be worse.
I'm still waiting for the final test results on Jessicat. If it also comes back inconclusive we'll have to decide if we treat her for lymphoma anyway. My instinct is saying "yes". We'll see what the internist says but of course I get the final call (unless of course the oncologist refuses to put her on chemo - but I have trouble picturing that). Of course without a definitive diagnosis the insurance company may not pay for chemo. I'm not seeing putting her through exploratory surgery to get a diagnosis.
I ate breakfast (wonderslim pancakes with a smushed banana) and fed the colonies. Now I need to get to work!

Yes, I enjoyed the movie on Sunday. I was tempted to go back today and see another one and also pick up some more groceries to fill in. I did a check with the local supermarket and found the items were not carried.
Maryanne--It really doesn't take much for me to put on the pounds either when not being careful. I'm sure that you will take care of the gain. I do hope you get some definite info on Jessicat so you can proceed with treatment.
Pam--This is the equation for calculating total cholesterol. The equation is: LDL + HDL + (triglycerides/5) = total cholesterol. For instance, if you had an LDL of 100, HDL of 60, and triglyceride level of 150, then the equation would read: 100 + 60 + (150/5).
My LDL was 95, the HDL was 69, and the triglyerides were 109 so that gave me a total of 186. Raise your HDL and lower the triglyerides and LDL to bring the total down.
In addition to reducing the saturated fat in the diet, adding fiber helps to lower cholesterol as it binds with the fat. "Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010" advises eating 14 grams of total fiber per 1,000 calories, or 28 grams in a 2,000-calorie diet.0 -
Jean..That's wonderful news about your cholesterol numbers. My new doctor is having mine check late next month. She'll review the results when I have my September physical. I just finished up a mani/pedi. I'm really into blue polish lately. My toes are blue jean blue and my fingers are similar but sparkly. I've come a long way from someone who only did clear or light pink I had a sparkly teal from last time when I went for the colonoscopy. Several of the medical staff made positive comments about the color. I'm enjoying the library AC. We don't have it at home and it's in the high 80s outside. I made my sister's corn and bean salad for a birthday potluck tomorrow. The birthday girl is in my book club and she's turning 90. She's very active and looks much younger than her age.0
-
Helene--I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming appointment and tests. The library is a great place to be if you don't have AC. I remember those days when this house had no AC. The blue polish sounds like a great shade. I need to break out of the "American Manicure" mode in which the finger nails look like a healthy pink with subtle white tips.0

Electricity was out from 4am to 7am. I was up early, so the cold left over coffee wasn't the greatest.
Egg Beater omelet with cheese and mushrooms for breakfast, followed with hot coffee.
I am down 3 pounds since last Wednesday (my mid-week check) and down 2 pounds since Sunday.0 -
Jean - good job on the cholesterol but sorry about the electricity! DH has been fussing and fussing with his generator. I swear if we don't soon get a power outage he's going to be sore disappointed.
I have a bunch of errands I need to do today. Such fun. Hah!0 -
Maryanne--I don't have a generator. There are rarely electrical outages of a long lasting nature here. The last one was in 2003...and it was unusually long...when an ice storm in February took down power lines throughout the state. I was without electricity for a week, and also no heat. At that time, many people bought generators but I didn't. Since then, outages have been rare and short lasting.0
-
We've been in this house since 1981. Before the last few years the longest we were ever without power was a few hours. That has NOT been the case the last few years. We've had some much longer outages. So I didn't object when DH wanted to buy a generator. Although now that I know there is such a thing as a whole house generator I wish we'd get that!
I have to feed the colonies, then go to the vet and pick up Indy. I'm going to keep her here tonight to make sure she doesn't eat tomorrow morning. Then heading to Annapolis where hopefully she'll get eye surgery. If you want to see what she has google "cat cherry eye". Not sure when I'll be picking her up. I hope not tomorrow evening. I'd rather come home and go back down Saturday morning. Night and day difference in traffic.
0 -
Maryanne--Hope all goes well with Indy. Ease of dealing with traffic is always a good factor to consider.
It is raining, and we have flash flood warnings out. Rain today, rain tomorrow, rain on Saturday and rain on Sunday. Enough is enough.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow but it is local. I was planning to get out today but I guess that will have to wait. I've got my contract ready to mail. School for the students begins in two weeks. Were did summer go? All I know is that it has been filled with rain.0 -
I can't say I'd ever heard of cherry eye. If it looks like you might run into afternoon traffic, why don't you ask them to keep her overnight? Then you can time your drive on Saturday to miss most of the traffic.
Jean..It's hard to believe you're going back to school so soon. The local kids got out only 5-6 weeks ago so they have the whole month of August to look forward to. The book discussion/potluck I went to yesterday was really nice. The 90 year old birthday girl was completely surprised. All the members made it. We're usually short one or two each month but I think everyone made a special effort for the birthday. Upon leaving, I got a mile down the road and hit a police detour. I figured it was a bad accident or broken water main. They were directing traffic through the industrial park, into a shopping center and then back on to the main. road. I was heading cross town to pay my taxes. I still have friends working at town hall and one of them told me it was an active shooter situation. It turns out, it was right across from my chiropractor's office. We had appointments today and he told me the police had all the businesses lock down and shelter in place. I think they were there a couple of hours until the swat team took everyone out the end of the building, escorted them (on foot) across the road and moved them to another safe location. My chiropractor lives just down the road in the neighborhood I'd just left. He didn't realize he was supposed to stay wit the group so he just walked home. Fortunately the situation ended peacefully and the man was take into custody and brought for a psychiatric evaluation. One of the receptionists heard he'd been served with divorce papers at work and that's what started the stand off. It lasted from noon until 7:30 and nobody was hurt.0 -
Helene--That was a terrible situation, one we never know when it can happen locally. Our school got out the first week of June as they chose not to take Spring break to make up snow days. Starting school this early is also a way to get instructional days in before Winter comes and the possibility of snow days....or flood days when there is excessive rain. I can remember when school began the day after Labor Day.0

I got the notice today from my doctor following up on my blood work. I was a little concerned that she would want me to start taking a station drug for my cholesterol since the total number was 217, but the ratio of good to bad cholesterol must be in range because she said it was ok and didn't suggest doing anything different. That's a relief for me.
Today I decorated the cake I had volunteered to make for a resident at the supported living community where I volunteer. As I went to deliver it, the lid blew off and I ended up sticking my hand in the cake when I tried to grab it. I was really annoyed, but after I got inside I was able to smooth out the icing and it looked ok. The place where I had written Happy Birthday was lost, but overall it didn't look too bad. At least I didn't drop the cake and ruin the white leg thing, lol!0 -
Off to doctor's appointment today. Such excitement!
I have lost 4 pounds since Sunday. I am trying the South Beach approach. I have been very satisfied despite them saying the first two weeks is the roughest.
0 -
Nice save on the cake. And greta you were able to avoid the statin drugs. Jean..That's great you're having success with South Beach. I know people who've done well on it. We're having showers today. It's been hot and dry so we need it. Nothing much on my schedule except laundry.0
-
Pam--It is good that you don't have to take a Statin drug. I do take one, one reason for the good results after the prior test. I haven't had any problems with what I take but some do. I am sure that the resident really appreciated the cake; good job on catching the cake.
Helene--We had limited showers today but after the past two days, it was nice to see sunshine. This has been the Summer of rain. We had people flooded again this week because of the amount of rain in a short period of time caused small creeks to overflow.
The appointment went well and the medical people approved the SB diet as they considered it a very healthy diet and with no kidney issues, there would be no problem caused by high protein.0 -
Pam - the only prescription drug I take is a statin. I've been taking it for years. My cholesterol is good on it, not great, so no one's ever suggested taking me off it. My dad takes it as well.
Helene - that was one heck of a scary situation for those businesses, Wow!
Jean - good luck with the SB diet!
I'm tired. Took Indy to the eye doctor yesterday. They wouldn't do the surgery without having her on 4 different medications first so I took her back to the vet. So yesterday I drove from Catonsville (west of Baltimore) to Annapolis (south of Baltimore), to Towson (north of Baltimore), back to Catonsville.
Before that we had to deal with me having a bad tire. Probably from the colonies (all the construction supplies and car parts). My car has run flat tires, no spare, so I always have a fifth tire. We had AAA come out and change tires and then I drove to Mr. Tire to order a new fifth tire.
I'll pick her back up Monday evening, we'll go to the eye doctor Tuesday morning and then I'll pick her up Tuesday evening or Wednesday evening, probably returning her to the vet the following day.
They tell me the odds of success on the surgery are around 85%. And they're giving us a pretty hefty rescue discount. So I'd say it's a go.
She was SO good when she was here and SO good at the vet. Except for one little hiss at the end. Couldn't blame her for that. The doctor had a student so poor Indy went through all the tests twice.
0 -
Maryanne--I hope all works out with Indy. I hoped she did a great hiss after having to undergo the tests twice. You certainly racked up the miles. I've ruined two tires in my driving history by running over something. I had AAA to rescue me; there is no way I can change a tire despite knowing how to do it.0

The official weight loss for the past week was 4 pounds which is the same as it was on Friday so it is beginning to slow down but at least I got a rare jump start.1
-
We had a massive downpour last evening. I knew the feeding spots at the colonies would be mud covered/water logged and they were. Being organized before I left home helped a great deal! There are still things I'm discovering that I can do different/better but I'm doing better. I just got done scrubbing two boot trays (helps with lesser rains to keep water/mud out of the dishes) and about 20 bowls of various types. Me, someone who doesn't even do dishes. One thing I didn't think to order two of I just got on amazon and rectified!

Maryanne--Feeding the colonies certainly takes time; you are a dedicated person. Amazon frequently comes to my rescue.0
-
Jean - there's a town near here - Ellicott City - sounds like they are going through something like part of W Va did recently. "Once ever 1000 years storm". DH says there are videos; I haven't checked yet.
It's made the national news: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/one-dead-100-rescued-after-flooding-causes-tremendous-devastation-maryland-n620416
0 -
Maryanne--I've been to Ellicott City. Rainfall of that amount in a very short period of time can and will create devastation. People don't understand how devastating it can be until faced with it. Chances are very good that many did not have flood insurance.0
