Team 5
Introductions are in order…
My name is Rus (I am one of your co-captains). This will be my 2nd race and I’m so excited to get back to this challenge.
I’m 49, married 29 years, and have 2 kids. My son graduated college in May, got married in June, and started teaching HS Math in August. My daughter is a junior in college and is engaged to be married in May. I grew up in MN playing hockey and moved down to the Kansas City area for college and have stayed here to raise our kids.
After Thanksgiving 2014, I stepped on a scale and I had reached a number that I never thought I would be, so I made the decision that I was making a life style change to get the weight off… 22 months later and I reached my goal of 75lbs lost. I’ve been in maintenance mode for a few weeks, gained a few pounds, so tweaking my numbers to find my happy place.
Last Sunday I pulled a calf muscle (grade 2 calf strain) during an 8K double run, so my activity level has been reduced considerably and I have just started a week of vacation, so I apologize in advance that I’m not going to be able to put up great numbers… but this is a TEAM challenge and I know you all will help pick up the slack!
Race Info
Team Name… we can stick with ‘Team 5’, use the team moniker from last race ‘Flying High-Fivers’, or I’m open to suggestions as well.
Entering your daily minutes, challenges, etc… please, please, please, get your minutes entered daily if at all possible. As with most MFP group challenges, we utilize a Google Sheets spreadsheet. If you don’t have access or use a computer much, you can download Google Sheets for iOS or Android devices. I use an Android phone and have an iPad and don’t have an issue using the spreadsheet on either. If you’re not able to enter into the spreadsheet, then “phone” them in by posting on the Team thread and one of your teammates can enter for you.
Team Thread… this can be a very fun and motivational experience, but it depends on how much you want to put into it, and I’m not talking about exercising… check in and say Hi or share a NSV or share a struggle. If you have been on MFP long, you probably realize like I have that it is a great community of people going through similar journeys and only want to help motivate and encourage.
Separate Team Group… we tried this last race to “strategize”, but it didn’t really work well. It was confusing to some and many of the mini challenges require us to post to our team threads here to get point credit. There really isn’t a whole lot of secret strategizing that needs to be done, so would like to just stick to using this thread.
The Race… each minute of exercise = 1 mile in the race. Let me say that one thing I learned from the last race is that, while exercise minutes matter, it is the mini-challenges that matter the most. Our team cheerleader in the last race was kind of a math/stats nut and during one week posted a comparison… it would take the team 7 hours, 48 minutes of exercise to get 10 points; whereas, one person, doing one 30-minute mini challenge, would also earn 10 points. The challenges are designed to accommodate injuries, etc., so we really need everyone to be striving to knock those out!
GO TEAM 5!!5 -
This sounds like another amazing MFP challenge, thanks @rusgolden for sharing the info!
Hola all, I'm a 46 year old, married mother of two. I've been off & on MFP for a couple years but didn't get serious until this past July 1st. I had a summer of travel & came to some harsh realizations about my appearance. I started the year at 233, started MFP (again) at 223 and at my last weigh-in (last Thursday), I was 194.5! I've participated in several challenges and know how much they've helped spur my progress - I'm hooked!
I learned a few weeks ago that I have two bulging disks, but I still walk, at least an hour, almost every day. I also do yoga & stretching & some free weights & body weight exercises, almost daily as well. I will work hard to help make Team 5 #1 (I'm very competitive!)
This is a new-ish team & new-ish challenge, I'd like us to consider a new name. Perhaps we can make a list of suggestions & vote. I'm putting in my two cents:
Five Star Hotties
Five Star Racers
(The) Golden Rulers (that's for you @rusgolden)
(The) Fit Fives
Love 'em/hate 'em, it's okay!
Happy Saturday from Miami, Florida!5 -
I'm Karen and I'm from Saskatchewan. I'm married with two daughters, 9 and 11. This is my second amazing race challenge! I really loved the last one!
I'm a runner and most of my exercise is from cardio. I hurt my lower back this week and I'm hoping it gets better soon so I can do stuff again!!
I'm really looking forward to some motivation! I haven't been logging on often! I'm very competitive, and looking forward to the challenges!!5 -
So excited to get in on this race, since I missed joining the one before this race. Hey @MiamiSeoul!! Good to see you here!
As of today, I'm 52 yo, single (never married mostly due to career) and the 'mother' of three cats. I also live in FL, but on the West Coast/Gulf side. I now consult/work from home, so I have a flexible schedule, which means I typically try to workout in the mornings after my devotions, and then I work in the afternoons into evenings. I usually take Saturdays to Mondays off from my structured workouts on Tues-Fri, but often I'm out paddling or gardening or walking over the weekends. I did just join a gym, so I'm trying to get there MWF for strength training.
I started stand up paddleboard (SUP) racing last year (about the same time I quit my job), and fell in love with the community and the competition. And it doesn't hurt they have an over 50 category for us vintage racers (though the 50+ ladies are in phenomenal shape, and super fast). My primary competitor this year has been one of my buddies who is 40+lbs lighter than me. During our last race last fall, I was on a faster board, I matched her stroke for stroke, and I watched her pull away from me, and finish 10 minutes ahead of me. It was just the push I needed to really get my act together since I knew the biggest factor outside of skill was our difference in weight.
On another fitness tracking site, they kept talking about counting calories and watching your macros. When I found out more about it, I thought I'd try it since nothing else was working for me to lose consistently in the past few years. In May 2016, I found MFP so I could start to track my calories and macros. I was about 150 lbs at the time, and I have lost over half my weight to my goal of 120 lbs (currently 132lbs). I could technically 'maintain' at this weight, since it's healthy and within normal BMI range, but I really want to get down further for paddling, and because when I got out of the Army 25 years ago, I was around 115-120, and felt good.
I love challenges because they keep me accountable, and my goal is under 120 by the end of December, so I know this race challenge will help me get to my ultimate goal! Looking forward to kicking butt on Team 5...I'll be the one looking for a river, bay, gulf, ocean, canal, or lake to paddle as we travel from spot to spot.4 -
@b3achy Happy Birthday!2

Thanks @MissionEnforcer - What a great b-day present to find out my team and meet my mates Thanks again for all the hard work you and @hawkins410 have done to put the race and teams together...and thanks to the team 5 co-captains for leading us to victory!2 -
Hi everyone! I'm Casty. I'm a single mom of 3 boys. We do lots of scouting adventures like hiking and camping, but I also work full time and go to school, teach den meetings, volunteer and advocate for children and families with Type 1 Diabetes, and participate in pto.. so sometimes have a hard time making myself work out. Challenges help! I've been on MFP on and off for a few years and basically yo-yo between chubby beer-lover and fit healthy eater... why can't I be a fit beer-lover?? Lol
I look forward to getting to know all of you and losing some chub!4 -
Hello! I'm Tammy, 29, married, and have a cat who is a jerk, but whom I still love.
I'm a huge nerd and gamer, but I still make time for my health and most of my exercise consists of walks on my lunch and the gym after work. I've always been heavy, but after some pretty traumatic stuff in my life happened, that got out of control. I started out at 320lbs in January 2015 and have worked my way down to about 227 right now. My first goal is 180 (I'm 5'11), but I'll reevaluate from there.
I'm one of those who likes challenges for the accountability too. Anything that keeps me pushing forward is a positive in my book.9 -
Hi Everyone. I'm June i will be your co captain again for team 5 . I'm from England i have been married for 38 years . i have two children both married. and i'm avery fit nanny to my daughters two little boys.we have two dogs a westie and a shih tzu they are my babies now i love them to bits. I'm very competitive as you will see as the challenge starts lol.
WHOOP WOO GO TEAM 5.5 -
Hi. I'm Jess and I currently live in Russia. I'm 31 and married. I don't have any kids or pets, though a dog is on the wish list.
I love hockey (the ice variety) and play a few times a week. I also use Fitness Blender for their programs and workouts. My main goal is to get back to the shape I was when I was doing varsity hockey try-outs, way back when! I've always struggled with my weight, so I have no doubt that my "final" weight will still be in the overweight category. I am not too concerned about that. What I really want is to be healthy and able to do all the things that I want to do, without my weight holding me back. There's also a family history of heart disease and diabetes, so I would like to avoid those things.
I am a huge fan of the Amazing Race TV series (both the US and Canadian versions). I also run a Game of Thrones challenge on MFP.5 -
I'm Jessie, but you can call me 'MB, or butt'. I absolutely love nerdy things (I did just go to a convention yesterday). Im huge on comic books (DC mainly since I had to narrow down my spending), and I fangirl for animes and mangas. I do cosplay, and when I'm working on an outfit, I like to train in exercises that I believe helped develop the character. My last cosplay was Sasha from Attack on Titan so while I created the costume for two months, I focused on speed & agility for their quickness, strength training some for muscle development, and yoga for the mind.
I love finding interesting ways to workout and I'm constantly learning something new. I even spent one winter learning bo staff spins just to learn.
I was planning on ordering Cize since I've been wanting a new program. I've done Insanity twice, Asylum once, Asylum/Insanity once, Body Beast once, Hip Hop abs twice, and tried P90x but found it dull.
I will be one of the goons that can't post to the spreadsheet (I have a dinosaur of a phone that refuses to download the spreadsheet app and instead shuts down). But I'll make sure to post minutes every night.8 -
Hi Team mates, very excited to be part of the team.
My name is Sue. I am married for 37 years. My husband and my friends on MFP have been a big strength for my weight loss journey. I started at 190 and went down to 160 this past summer. Never made time for exercising before, and that has changed. My exercising is mainly at night as during the day I watch my grand children (3 and 6) M- F and their activities come first. Losing the weight has helped me keep up to their pace. I am a retired daycare teacher and many years ago I hurt my knee, lots of surgeries on it ACL and tore the meniscus. My knee now is very strong and does not bother me.
Enjoy travelling, gardening, sports Nascar, Baseball, MFP.
Love healthy eating and cooking!

G'Morning Mates! Cool to see we have such an international team! I just send out friend requests to everyone on the team (I was sneak peaking in the other teams' threads and one mentioned we'd probably have to do it anyway for an early challenge) with a note that it was for the challenge.
@MiamiSeoul - I really like the Fit Fives, but after @2016summerfun's post in the Q&A, I'm wondering if we should be Rus' Angels (spin off of Charlie's Angels) or something similar...j/k - lol...poor @rusgolden as the only guy so far on the team. I do like Golden Rulers (since I'm a bit of a Golden Girl)...but it also reminded me of 5 Golden Rings...however, both of the last two options leaves out Summer/June as our fellow co-captain. I was thinking of the Fab Fives, which is probably why I like the Fit Fives. Or we can keep the name from last time, if most of the group has returned. I'm pretty flexible.
Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday. I'm heading out for a quick morning paddle before making my move to Leavenworth to get to the starting line. Toodles for now.4 -
Hi team 5 -
About 2.5 years ago I Iooked around and realized how lucky I was in life, and I could find no reason to be unhappy except for my weight. I finally had the mental energy to devote to myself, and between April '14 and Dec '15, I lost 92 pounds. My goal was to lose 120, but in that time I went from a completely sedentary 30something to a 40 year old who had completed a 5K (and once I ran 5 miles, in a row!). After last Christmas I lost a bit of that mental energy and I've gained and lost and gained the same 12 pounds such that now I'm at -80 pounds. I was in the last amazing race challenge and I like its format and teamwork. As I look forward to this challenge, I'm thinking about what could derail my participation....
Category 1: Exercise. I fall into the trap of giving all of myself to everyone else, a common malady to those of us who parent (I have 2 girls, super involved in sports), teach (HS sci teacher and active at the district and state-level), and/or have community involvement (I serve on the town's scholarship foundation). So, please do me a favor, if I am MIA for more than 2 days in a row.... I just need a gentle reminder to invest in myself (nice way of saying get off your X)!!!???!?!?! To help motivate myself I have signed up for a 5K on Thanksgiving morning with a few friends... so I am planning to build up my endurance as I can currently run about 2 miles, need to get that up to 3!
Category 2: Food. I love cooking. My kids would rather watch food network than cartoons, I love testing new recipes, and I teach a food science class at the high school (this past week we had a fudge-making lab... yikes!). Also, my husband is a wine maker, so sometimes I just have to sample! Logging fidelity is another thing I've struggled with in recent months.
Team 5, I'm happy to be a part of this team and challenge, I look forward to competing together with you!
@rusgolden and @2016summerfun -- thanks in advance for the team leadership! We appreciate your time!
@MzManiak -- Confession: when I saw where the race was starting I thought that some type of beer challenge must surely be in order... I'm not a huge beer fan, but reading your post made me laugh!6 -
It is looking like a solid team and looking forward to playing with you all. I think we've had about half report in so far, so hopefully will get the rest in later today so we all know each other and make sure we are starting the race with a full team. I know Kat is in Bali surfin' it up and might be later in the week before she reports in, but said she would be getting some good minutes in for the team while she is away.
@MiamiSeoul - thank you for the suggestions and @b3achy and June... lol, I'm used to being the minority in challenges, I guess it's just not a manly thing to do, lol. I do like the Fit Fives and the Five Star Racers.2 -
Hello my new fit friends and a few old ones (well, not really old, just well seasoned)!
My name is Rae and I'm a fairly fit 56. Wife of 35 years, mother of 3 grown boys, and grandmother to 2 amazing wee people with another on the way. I also have 2 very spoiled and loveable fur babes who run the show on our country "estate" in beautiful Oregon, USA. Sassy the Aussie, and Millie the beagle in my current profile pic.
I joined MFP in January 2015 and hit my first goal weight by October. It took awhile, but I was patient and having fun. Then I got a little complacent and have gained back about 5 which has now stuck around for this whole year. Ideally, I'd like to lose that plus another 10 to be in my happy place! Right now, I'm all about enjoying the journey, becoming more fit and if some pounds disappear in the process, then woohoo!
For exercise I love to play disc golf (with hubby), aquasize, walk, hike and do MFP group challenges. I played in my first disc golf tournament last summer and it was so fun!
I also force myself to do strength training when a challenge requires it. I like to say that I love yoga, as well. However, I rarely do it willingly unless a challenge requires. There's a pattern here, LOL.
Looking forward to a fun challenge and getting to know all of you better! I'm up for any name as long as it doesn't have "loser" in the title!5 -
Hi @b3achy . . . I guess we get around!
@geminiswede, love that kitty hard, because you never know . . . I lost my Bella, a Shih Tzu/Maltese yesterday morning & I'm devastated. Spent all day in bed - couldn't even eat until late in the afternoon when my blood sugar, and need to take medications, forced me. She was such a great girl. I'm heartbroken . . .
+ R.I.P. Bella +
I've created a list of suggested team names (thus far). Please chime-in with any suggestions and then we can begin posting our top three, in order of preference, with #1 being your favorite, #2, your second favorite & finally your 3rd pick.
Here's what we have so far:
1) Team 5
2) Flying High-Fivers
3) Five Star Hotties
4) Fit Fives
5) Rus' Angels
6) Five Star Racers
7) Five Golden Rings
8) Golden Rulers
9) Fab Fives
Have a wonderful Sunday!2 -
Hi everyone! This is my first race and I'm looking forward to this exciting new challenge! My name is Tracy and I'm 47 and have been married for 24 years. I have two boys who are both in college and two dogs (boxer and a dachshund) who are my big babies! I am from Wisconsin and recently moved back after living all over the United States while my husband served twenty plus years in the USMC. I am a nurse by profession and have recently returned to college to pursue my masters. Most of my adult life I have struggled with my weight and even though I have close to 45 pounds left to lose, I feel like this is the strongest and healthiest I have been in a very long time. I joined MFP almost a year ago and lost 30 lbs only to be sidelined for close to a year due to a hip injury that I had to have surgery for. I enjoy hiking, running, watching football and discovered triathlon's and now I'm hooked! I'm excited that Leavenworth was chosen as the destination, as I use to live in Washington and visited this area a few times. Looking forward to this walk or run down memory lane! Go Team 5!5

@MiamiSeoul -- so sorry about your doggie. They become such a part of our family and I know it must have been quite the emotional loss for you!1
-

Howdy from South Africa. I am basically at maintenance although I would like to drop another 5 kg to maintain at fighting weight. Hoping that the current season of challenges (and the start of summer ) will help me with the motivation to be scrict with my food. Exercise is fun for me (epee fencing, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, swimming and running) although the last year has been slow thanks to a torn acl and acouple of concussions. I have three fur kids at home and lots of scaly ones at work (OK, one at home is scaly and a few at work are furry). I work with reptiles, spiders and seals! Looking forward to a fun adventure with the team. I don't really mind what we are called...4
-
@MiamiSeoul, so sorry to read about your family member. I hope you find comfort knowing your cute dog left you with some great memories!2
-
My suggestion is "The Fantastic Five" but I also like:
#1Five Star Racers
#2Golden Rulers
#3FabFives2 -
I may not be the best person to toss out name ideas *looks at username* but I will just leave these here:
Sole Survivors
Holy Walkamolies
Lost in Pace
Take a Hike
Got the Runs (a My_Butt favorite)
Toe Jammers6 -
@MiamiSeoul - so sorry to hear about your fur baby! They really are family and it is so hard when you lose one. Take the time to grieve, and give yourself a bit of grace during the process. (((hugs)))
Howdy to everyone else! We're going to be an awesome team!
Just got back from a 115 minute paddle in crazy winds (I thought they were going to be 5-10mph, but instead were 10-15 mph ~ I typically find other landlocked things to do when it's over 10 mph). Exhausted but happy that I got some water miles in today.2 -
@MiamiSeoul So sorry to hear about Bella. I have 2 dogs of my own and know how much they become part of your family. Hugs.2

Hi, my name is Jackie. This is my first Amazing Race and I am so excited to be a part of this group. I am a 45 year old mother of 2 grown kids. I enjoy spending the evening walking my 2 dogs but we have just had the most ridiculous fall storm So it looks like I'll be spending the next few days walking the treadmill or dusting off my workout videos instead. I have gained and lost weight more times than I'd like to admit over the past few years. However, I am happy to have this group to help keep me motivated and get my weight and physical activity in check.2

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate it.
Here's a revised list of suggestions:
1) Team 5
2) Flying High-Fivers
3) Five Star Hotties
4) Fit Fives
5) Rus' Angels
6) Five Star Racers
7) Five Golden Rings
8) Golden Rulers
9) Fab Fives
10) Fantastic Five
11) Sole Survivors
12) Holy Walkamolies
13) Lost in Pace

Hellooooooo Team Five!
I just had a grand ol' time reading all these posts! I laughed out loud many times--- so glad my 'mates have a sense of humor.
@MiamiSeoul : My heart goes out to you for losing dear Bella. I love my pets DEARLY so I relate to your devastation. She was greatly blessed to have you as a mom. Talk about her as much as you need (if you wish to share). ((((Big Hug))))
I have zip zero nada opinion about our name! I'll support whatever (almost! lol... looking at you, Butt!).
I'm living in Maine (read: the willywags) running a small business (or should I say being run by a small business!) with my husband of 22 years. Our oldest son just finished high school and is taking the year off to work with us. It's really nice to have him helping us! Our younger son is a sophomore in high school and goes to school out of state. (We sent him there as he was being bullied by the dopes around here )
Unfortunately, weight loss has been on my To Do list many times since having babies. I make some progress -- but then I gain it back. I have learned many lessons along the way; for me, this is a mental battle. I know how to eat healthily -- my downfall is to turn to food when I'm emotional about something. But, I'm in a different place this time and I think I may well just have what it takes to finish the job!
Looking forward to working hard with all of you!
** So, after midnight on Sunday we can start counting our exercise for the challenge?
**Someone I'm sure already said --- but how do we get a shared copy of the Google doc?
