Thanks for the article Snoozie. I agree with almost everything in it and it’s stuff that I think we’ve all learned and accepted but have a real hard time doing! It’s good to be reminded of it all so that we can evaluate what we’re doing and how it meshes with the info. The one area that I’m confused on and question is when it comes to eating fat, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I see so many conflicting opinions on that one. I know we should stick to “healthy” fats but is a low fat diet good or evil? Do I buy the whole fat cottage cheese or the low fat?
I suspect that if I had a family doctor that I went to every year for a full physical that they would probably put me on cholesterol meds. My triglycerides are higher than they should be, my good cholesterol is low and my bad is high. My A1C is a bit too close to that cut off for pre-diabetes. I keep saying that I’m going to find a good family doctor for me and my husband but I think I put it off because I don’t want to deal with all these issues. I know...that’s a really stupid approach. It’s the head in the sand tactic. We do get our blood work done every year but we’re really the only ones who look at the results. My hubby gets his done at work and the nurse there gave him a book on eating right for life (because of his triglyceride level). He was so cute! You should have seen him reading this thing out loud to me. He acted so surprised that potatoes and bread were high in carbs and did I know that carbs turn into sugar in your blood stream?!?!?!!! Aaaaarrrggghhh! As if I hadn’t been telling him that for years and years!!! Men!!!! Sheesh!!!0 -
lmao suzy.. I shouldn't have read the end of you post while I was having lunch; I almost spewed my tea just picturing your face when hubby was reading the info and asking "did you know:??? I can just imagine the eye rolling behind his back!! will write more later just read up on everything but a little pressed for time0

Thanks, Snoozie, I am going to try easing into the Crestor 5 mg...first .......as you said your sister was put on5 mg by her doctor because it hurt her the way it did at 10 mg. So that may be a good way for me to try it. I only remember the CoQ10 when you mention it along with the one Susan reminds me about ....I will try to add it back in too... I would try Ginko Biloba for my memory but I would forget to take it! : )
Strength training is so important for us at our tender ages. I am getting in a bit every day or so...just can't seem to get back in the groove of riding that darn gym bike though. I've been standing at my desk for over 4 years....not much to show for it, but I do feel better at the end of the day.
I agree with you, Snoozie, Too Funny!! Suzy's bit about her Hubby really taking in the nurse's booklet advise when it comes from someone else is Golden!
The way I have heard people separate fat from fiction is that healthy fats are good for you, but should not be coupled with high carbs....ie. breads, starches, pasta, etc, and ....so on so forth...all the good stuff.
Low carb healthy fats and the weight falls off them. My problem with that is I can't not eat bread, pasta, potatoes....etc.. I can cut back on it and not eat them all the time, but I am gonna' cave when I see homemade mashed potatoes , good crusty bread, the list goes on.
Vail, I agree, keep taking them (statins)...especially if you aren't hurting from them... and they will help your risk come down on so many areas.
Super reason for weight gain info, Snoozie! It gives me incentive to kick up the weight training.
Milove, oops looked over and had hit a "r" after your name....(milover) We don't even know each other that well...lol
....anyway, I hope we can get these high numbers down and off the meds. That wish goes out to us all.
Signing off , hope you al have a lovely weekend.

Thank you for the early morning laugh, Suzy! So funny! So true too (I'm useless at that kind of exercise).
And Gail, your comment about mis-spelling Milove's name - "we don't even know each other that well" - I can't stop laughing! You ladies are on form today!1 -
Suzy i'm such a knob I was reading your potato thing and thinking ya right.. I buy 2 potatos at a time like i'm ever gonna have even a 2 lb bag at home.... duh!! got me totally.. and at least I didn't spew my coffee this morning when I got the last line!
As for the "fats" question... i'm no expert but I have to agree with Gail - from everything I've read it's important we get GOOD fats in.. and not just for health, but to provide that "satiated" feeling when you eat... as fat as the "low fat" or "fat free" anything, I stopped buying ALL low fat stuff like sour cream and mayo and frozen dinners after the nutrition classes where they taught us that they take out the fat and replace it with SUGAR ... and considering the small amounts of that kind of thing we usually eat, the nutrition people said you're far better off having a serving of the regular stuff... (notice they said "serving".... lol I tend to go a little over on a real serving size of that stuff).
I don't actually follow a "low carb" diet but as Gail said, I try to cut out the "white carbs" - the simple carbs like bread potatos pasta etc.. and stick to veg and fruit for the complex carbs.. BUT weirdly enough, another thing they taught us at the diabetic class this time was if you are GOING to have a white carb (my name for em not theirs)... then to make sure you have a "sugar blocker" along with it... if I have a slice of bread on it's own lets say, it immediately and quickly turns to sugar in my blood stream (UMM DID you know that carbs turn to sugar Suzy?? haaaaaaa ok sorry I couldn't resist!!) and when that converted sugar knocks on the door to the pancreas to say hey give me some insulin, the pancreas says ya no sorry dude i'm all out...and slams the door...... so the sugar goes back into the bloodstream and runs around attacking the organs trying to get in them instead....
SO... as a diabetic, my goal is to avoid any quick rush of sugars when I eat, to keep my blood sugars level all day (for us its the spike and the crash after that causes all the damage) and to do that, if i'm having a white carb, i'm far better off actually adding butter to a potato, or peanut butter to the bread, some kind of "sugar blok" that my body will have to digest before it starts to convert the carbs i ate into sugar ... so it slows down the delivery of it... and sugar blockers are any protein, fat...or...hmm something else I can't remember right now lol...
even dipping bread in an olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix like the Italians do is better for a diabetic (or pre diabetic) because the fat and acid are both blockers.. of course, needless to say it would be far better for me NOT to eat the bread at all.... but... I am quite conscious now when I do have something tht's a simple carb..... to add a block... so when I have pasta I make sure to add not just veggies (because they are still more carbs on top of the pasta, even tho they are good ones!) but also some chicken or a meat sauce to help slow down the converted sugar..
hey did you know that carbs convert to sugar in our bodies??? HAHAHAHAHA sorry I just could NOT resist that!!! and yes I admit parts of this post included not to subtle references to the "did you know".. I just couldn't resist Suzy!! I think you deserve a medal for not smacking dear hubby upside the head ... but aint it always the way.. .we can tell men anything...and all they hear is blah blah blah.. but someone else comes along and tells em the same thing and suddenly it's like a revelation... good thing we love em LOL..
AND Suzy... I have to say I honestly think you should try to find a family doc if you can.. its great that hubs can get it at work and that you guys get it done annually - BUT having a family doc who has your whole history .. and can start tracking some baseline numbers and following them along is invaluable... they get a much bigger picture with the whole overall health of their patient when they have the whole history and get to know you as a person as well... just my two cents worth ..1 -
So funny about the carbs turing to sugar thing! I think we women all learned that in cookery class many years ago (back in my day girls and boys were segregated when it came to things like cookery or woodwork) and the men missed out?
Weighing in on the fat thing, I've done low fat eating in the past, and it seems to make me completely miserable. And a lot of things that are made low fat don't really need to be. Milk is already low fat (2%), and I find I need less whole milk (than skimmed milk) in tea or coffee, which probably almost cancels out the calorie difference. Cottage is also relatively low fat (compared to say cheddar), and I always buy the full fat version, because it tastes much nicer.
There's also such a thing as fat soluble vitamins, as we know from our cookery classes - lol! So yes, I'm happy to eat the egg yolks as well as the whites (an egg white omelette is a travesty as far as I'm concerned!

What a way to start my morning you guys have given me a lot of chuckles. Milover lol, Potato bags lol
My once a week exercising is out the door, my right knee is swollen and painful. I do a lot of moving around at work and up and down stairs. Which is probably why I am having this problem.
I scheduled my massage for next Sunday and I added a facial also. "Treating Me" Milove starting life at age 60 downsizing to a small apartment helped to free money up (and keep family inlaws away) oops did I say that.

Suzy- lol about both your hubby and the potato advice . So funny
Thanks Snooozie for the interesting article. You are always a wealth of helpful information !
So sorry, but I have to vent about my sucky Friday ( is sucky a real word? If not it should be!) so I go to my morning dentist appointment fo get my teeth cleaned which is not my favorite way to start the day , but then they discover I have an abscess tooth which I may loose cause it already had a root canal. I was referred to an endodontist. I dread the procedures and expenses involved, especially if I need to get a dental implant to the tune of $5,000 and a years worth of treatment. I then went Friday afternoon to a follow up eye appointment to get my eyes dilated and scanned to check on my macular cellophane. Well the tech was having all this trouble doing the scan while I stayed staring at a green star with a flashing red knight listening to never ending cranking with my forehead pressed against the top and my chin sitting on the chin slot. He keeps saying things like are you sure your looking at the star? Try not to move your eye.... is your forehead pressed against the bar. Like I was doing something wrong causing his problem getting the scan. So after 15 minutes of this he gets up and gets a different tech and we repeat the procedure for another 15 minutes before she gives up saying she’s getting the same poorer quality images that he did. Guess a good quality images to take is a 10 and best quality they said they could get was between 5 and 7. Doctor then comes out and takes a look at saved images. Well turns out it wasn’t a machine problem but rather my eye that was the problem for various reasons the most important of which was that while the techs thought they were getting inaccurate images the truth was the images were accurate but the results were so bad that the image didn’t look like it was supposed to. My macular pucker (also called epiretinal membrane) , which is is a layer of scar tissue that grows on the surface of the retina, has worsened severely and I was referred to a retina specialist. While I was in the front office setting that up I could hear the doc and tech whispering in the back area about my results which didn’t make me feel better. I might not see well, but I have super sonic hearing ! Anyway, I wouldn’t get so upset if this condition were in my weak right eye that has poor vision anyway, but, as luck would have it, it is in my only good eye, my left one. So that pretty much sums up my Friday and venting. Thanks for listening0 -
Oh Susan, I am so sorry that all of that happened...especially all in one day!!! You have every right to vent! Keep us posted on the eye issues; that sounds really scary and surely there’s something they can do. I absolutely hate dental issues! Hate! Hate! Hate! I psych myself out and make it so much worse than it needs to be and the expense!!! It’s astronomical! Hang in there and I hope your weekend is better to you. Wine might help.
Sorry about your knee Gwen. Believe me, I feel your pain!! Rest, ice, compression, elevate (RICE). It seems lately that every time I get to the point that I can go back to my exercise routine I end up with a hurt knee/neck/elbow...something that keeps me from being able to do it.

Suzy, .....Still laughing about the potato bag..... I was so with it....right until the end!!!
Susan, Oh my that is a nightmare day!
Suzanne, thanks! You have some great info that I can always use. Now I just need to put it into practice....I have less than 2 months to drop some lbs before new year...Game on!
Gwen ,sorry about the knee, that may be more painful to me than a back issue...
You girls ROCK!!1 -
I'm sorry about your news, Susan. And it doesn't sound like it was handled very well by the staff at the eye clinic. I hope you have a better appointment with the retinal specialist and that there's something they can do to help. And to find out about the dental problem on the same day! I hope things brighten up for you.
I'm sorry about your knee too, Milove. What is with knees and women our age? A couple of my friends have knee problems, and I do too. Maybe it's just the joints wearing out with use. The only thing that springs to mind is that I was told RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. I don't know if that's still the thing to do in your case! I hope it's better soon, anyway.0 -
Susan - I'm not sure sucky is a strong enough word to describe your Friday - holy *kitten*. I know the fear of anything going wrong with our eyes, and finding out that your good one has the problem.. well sucky doesn't come close!! I'm STILL paying off my dental work from 3 yrs ago so I can totally relate to the dread of not only any procedure, but the cost! hoping they can suggest some alternatives - I know they have some kind of new implant that is much less costly than a regular one but of course; much depends on the bone density u have and the problem itself.... I mostly hope tho they are able to take care of your eye!
Milove - I only had a sore knee once in my life... I never realized how debilitating it is until that happened so I hope the RICE the ladies have offered up helps and you're mobile again soon!0 -
Thanks so much Suzy, Gail, Vail and Snoozie for your empathy. Turns out my Saturday was far worse than my Friday which helped me keep my Friday news in perspective. My sister texted me to let me know my mother was taken to the hospital from her assisted care with a 104 fever and was diagnosed with pneumonia from her congestive heart failure and is septic (which means the bacteria got into her bloodstream) so yesterday was super tough emotionally. However . I am relieved and happy to say she is stable today. i must say I have been indulging in comfort foods and alcohol like crazy these last two days! Going to do my best to get back on board my healthy habits train today!
Hoping your knee is feeling better Milove and that everyone is having a healthy and happy weekend0 -
Susan, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she’s out of the hospital soon. I completely understand the comfort food and alcohol. Sometimes you just have to give yourself a break.
Have any of you ever had issues with tendinitis in your elbow? Any suggestions on how to treat it would be appreciated. I think it’s a result of my big hike from using my hiking poles. I think I put too much weight on my arms to compensate for my knee!!! I’m falling apart over here!!!
My eating has been erratic and I’ve been making way too many excuses lately. I’m on that train with you today, Susan. So far, so good!0 -
I can't believe things got worse, Susan. You must have been so worried about your mother. It sounds like a very close call. I hope she's getting a little better now. No wonder you indulged in food and alcohol *hugs*
Suzy, I've never had tendonitis, so I'm sorry I have no advice! I was just thinking how many of our injuries and aches and pains are caused by exercise. I suppose that it least it shows that we are active. You reminded me that I saw a group out doing Nordic walking the other day, a mix of ages but mostly older. Have any of you tried it? It involves walking with poles and is supposed to take the strain off lower joints. There are some free guided walks near where I live so I wondered if it was worth getting into. Not the kind of serious walking/hiking that you do, Suzy! I hope you find something that works for your elbow.1 -
I am I so sorry to hear about your Friday Susan. I hope your new retina specialist office is more professional and I pray your prognosis is good. I am also sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad that her condition has stablized.
Yes Suzy when I played tennis, I stopped 2 years ago and I still have slight tenderness when I move my elbow a certain way.
Yes, I have been resting my knee but I've been using heat instead of the ice and I'm feeling pretty decent to go to work1 -
Seehe, I am sorry to hear about your mom. With all you have been through...think nothing of that indulging... any of us would be doing the same thing. Sending prayers and hugs your way.
Suzy, I have what I think is tendonitis at times in my elbows and I put something like ben-gay or like on them and wrap them up in a stretchy wrap thingy, the one with the useless beige clippy things...you know what I mean...the correct word is not coming to me at the moment. It helps mine. It usually happens when I try to carry too many groceries in at a time... I try to see if I can get them all in without making another trip back in....lol
Hope you get some relief with it.

I’m trying a new impromptu recipe tonight, just something I dreamed up. I sautéed zuchini, onion, bell pepper and ground chicken then added some red enchilada sauce and fat free cheese, rolled it up into corn tortillas. I topped it with more sauce and cheese and am baking. I’m hoping it’s not a total bust.
What are some yummy recipes that y’all have just dreamed up? I’m looking for new ideas! I feel like I eat the same things all the time. Then I get bored and just order pizza.
****Update**** It was yummy!!0 -
Sorry Suzy, I am probably one of the worlds worst cooks so don’t have any recipes to share. Hope your tendinitis is feeling better.
My mother was moved from the hospital to hospice yesterday where I just heard she is not doing well. I was supposed to be flying there on the 28th for my nieces wedding, but moved my flight up. I may not be in touch for awhile, but thank you all for your support.0 -
Susan, I’m so sorry. We’re all with you in spirit. Sending hugs!1
-
Sorry to hear this Susan. Sending best wishes to you and to your mom.
Sounds yummy Suzy.

Young Son is getting married tomorrow night.....yep, really quick wedding..... nope, not preggers ......I don't think. Girlfriend is trying to get in the military, so if they're married then he can get on medical benefits and such...
I told them they are cheating me out of my vision of "my little girls wedding"...LOL................. I always tell Jamie that I wanted a little girl so badly that I dressed him in dresses until he started school....NO I didn't really, but the clothes were so much prettier for girls...naturally. but, also, you would have to know Jamie, he has probably more thoughts on what he wanted his wedding to be like than she has...we pick at him about probably having his own Pinterest page for it. lol
On the plus side , we are all saving Soooooooooo much $$$$$ this way... I am only out about $100 all total ( her bouquet, baby girl 's bouquet, 3 button ears for the guys...( couldn't spell it, but you get the meaning).......and no rehearsal dinner to stress over....!!!
win - win!!
Later!
G
Prayers sent out for Safe travel and hoping for good news from Mom getting better, Susan!!

I'm so sorry, Susan. I'll be thinking of you. I hope your mother is being looked after well.
Congratulations on your son's wedding, Gail! My son had some girls' clothes when he was little - some were hand-me-downs, and a couple I actually bought because the girls' clothes had better colours - lol!
2 -
Congratulations Gail! Believe me...you’re saving a fortune! My daughter’s wedding was wonderful but we’re still paying it off three years later.
I’m having a terrible time staying the course right now. I do great all day but lose my focus at night. I eat way too much dinner and then snack afterwards on bad choices. I haven’t even looked at the goals that I spent so much time putting together. Ugh!!!0 -
Sending you much love Susan,
Congrats on your son's wedding Gail,
I am right with you Suzy but I am trying but I get frustrated at work and I come home and eat extra with carbs and sweets. after Thanksgiving, I have to go back to doing my diary.2 -
See, that’s my problem! I say, “after ______ I’m going to get serious!” And there’s always something to put in that blank....Thanksgiving, Christmas, vacation, pain in one of a multitude of body parts, etc. etc. etc!!!! I have got to stop these rationalizations!!! I have rationalized my way through years and years of being overweight. I did really well today with my eating. So I’m going to take an addicts approach and just say, “one day at a time.” Today was good. Tomorrow is a new day and I just have to make it through the day...just one day.1
-
I'm the same too, sometimes I feel motivated, but sometimes I'm tired and stressed and just think that I'll start again tomorrow. I had finished my eating last night and for some reason gave in to snacking in the evening. I agree with the one day at a time approach though. I might have to modify it to one hour at a time - lol!
I'm starting on a low FODMAP diet due to issues that nobody needs to know about - lol! Has anybody done it? It's restrictive, which will be a pain, but I'm hoping that actually having to be so careful about what I eat will mean that I keep a better eye on the quantity too.0 -
Count me in on that issue also, I do so well up until I go home and then it's "Katie, Bar the door!! cause I'm eating and snacking all the way till after dinner. No control what -so -ever do I have!
Suzy, I know it must have been a beautiful wedding, but you have to sit back and wonder ,don't you......was it really worth all of that...couldn't we have had just as much fun a little cheaper....lol
I know it was a blessing for us... This is the most broke I have been in a while.....I'm looking forward to a new year... and no car payment after April!!! yay!
Susan , still thinking and sending prayers and good thoughts to you and Mom...
Suzanne, hope you aren't having to work to hard.... we miss you!
Vail, Not too up to date on FODMAP diet, sounds like not too much fun. Best wishes!
1 -
Gail, it was a beautiful wedding and probably the last time our extended families will ever all be together. But yes, we could have gone a cheaper route. My husband wanted to have it at the house and have cold cut trays...hahaha! Needless to say that his “little sweetie baby” didn’t want that. He is so wrapped around his little girl’s finger. Still, it was a lot of money!!! Now, when our son gets married we shouldn’t have to foot the bill for much besides a rehearsal dinner (supposedly).
Vail, I had to google search fodmap. I was unfamiliar with that one. It reminds me of the Whole30 that I did last year. It is difficult to stick with but not impossible. If you’re having health issues and it helps than I really wish you the best of luck. I found this link, which was very detailed. Maybe it will help. https://www.ibsdiets.org/fodmap-diet/fodmap-food-list/
