You didn't have a "cream tea" when you were in the UK, Sandy? A cream tea always has scones and whipped cream and jam (and tea, obviously...)

No. We had Early Gray Tea with sugar cubes and milk served with biscuits. Tea time at 4 o'clock on the button at my friend's parents' home.

That's a biscuit for heaven's sake. You all sound like an old Irish roommate I had in college. He had all his bread-stuffs, cookies, etc. mixed up!
Lol, Bob, pretty sure since our ancestors came from that neck of the woods, it was rebellious Americans who have it mixed up. Just like we changed spellings of words like colour to color, say compost with a long "o" vs. short "o" and all that jazz.
I just looked up the difference between a scone and biscuit and they are a bit different, though they look similar. But like Brenda, born and bred and raised here in the states, I have never heard of fried bread dough called a scone. Lol0 -

It must be a utah thing: http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2014/08/swiss-days-scones.html
I think it is really fry-bread but I've always known it as a scone.2 -
The whole English language thing with it's dialects and accents etc. around the world is actually really fascinating to me.
Having lived in Canada (with English parents), the UK and now Australia plus now working for an American company I am a total pro at translating between all the different dialects and spellings (I have to spell everything wrong for work!). I even realise (realize) that @barbheart means cookies when she says biscuits - so clearly I've even got the Spanish version of English figured out! :-D
Having said that, sometimes I cannot for the life of me remember how to say things - reading that about "compost" - I have no clue how to say that word. I think I used to say it with a long "o" but it doesn't sound right anymore.
People make fun of me here a fair bit too! Rude! Like you're not allowed to say "router" as in "rooter" here in Australia because it means something naughty, but I had to train myself to say "rooter" when I lived in the UK otherwise they'd laugh at me.... Same with "yogurt" - trained myself to say it with a short "o" and now have to say it with a long "o" again...
A guy I've been working with for a year now picked that I had a Canadian accent the other day - he had no idea I was Canadian he'd assumed American - he mentioned that I say "about" like a Canadian (I totally don't - he's crazy and that's ridiculous). I haven't lived in Canada since 1999!2 -

So now I know that if I'm ever in Utah and order a scone it will really be fried dough, Yay!!!1 -
Scones are the puffy triangles in my experience. I love all the differences!1
