I am struggling with carbs lately. I’m not hungry but find myself eating dumb stuff. Like this last week I have eaten McDonald’s like 3 times. I eat when I’m not hungry and it’s always carbs. I figure it’s anxiety. Today I don’t know what to have to do better. We have no cheese and that’s a crisis in our house. Dh is laughing about it, waiting to see when I’ll break and have to have it. That’s fine, I figured we’d have tostadas for dinner, but without cheese.

I had a hummingbird visit this morning so I made it some water. They seem to be picky of the feeders. I bought 2 new ones and they like the old gross one.

I’m trying to get a few things done before surgery, all the online school work possible, cleaning, and with the deluge x deluge we had last week, I was able to pull grass from the flower bed until my hands said “no more”. I also cut a patio peach sucker that was a full grown tree down and relocated some volunteer Nandinas to the spot. I found a volunteer patio peach in the woods from throwing the unusable peaches, I may relocate it. Idk. I also relocated the blackberry in the front flowerbed to the woods. I figure at this point if it makes my hip worse, it won’t be for long. And hopefully I can’t do any more damage to it.

Now, let’s see if we can some how make dh think cheese, burgers or pizza is his idea. I suppose I could just do ramen and veggies...

@ddmom0811 - I bet you are so happy to have open house behind you! I always found it so nerve-racking and such a long day! It looks like yo might be right with the hurricane. What we are seeing on the news is that you all I Florida will get rain but the storm is going to turn and weaken as it moves up the coast. Oh and tomatoes - you need to have someone send you some Jersey tomatoes for that caprese salad. They would make a big difference because they are so flavorful. I am not a huge fan of tomatoes but they are really good.

@elise4270 - I find I eat carbs when I can't figure out anything else to eat and it is easy... I am pretty sure I forgot to eat lunch today and ate popcorn instead (watching a nail biter football game) and then later some chips and salsa.
We did make a healthy dinner - a recipe for lemon chicken cooked with asparagus in foil packets on the grill. We both thought it was very blah and the asparagus was way over cooked, to the point that I wouldn't eat it.
You need to plant a hibiscus, preferably with red flowers. Then you wouldn't need bird feeders! We have lots of hummingbirds. Did you know that they also eat gnats! I was fortunate to see a bunch of hummingbirds flying very strangely and then realized there was a huge cloud of gnats that they were flying back and forth in... guess it was like a buffet!

I didn't know about the gnats. I had a hibiscus but I killed it. I can't remember how. I'll see if I can get another for the back patio. I havent killed any thing on it yet.

I'm suspecting that some of this "hunger" may be part recovery related. Doc 2 said knock it out, everything think is fine, so I've been trying to do a few hills and stairs. I figured the stronger I am going in to another surgery the faster I'll recover. The leg that had been slight compared to normal, has gained size where it's not as obvious. I can still tell with the strength but the muscle is recovering. Maybe its an energy demand.

Today's food? I want Italian tomatoes. @ddmom0811 we buy the canned San marzano tomatoes. I can imagine the fresh are even better. Guess I'm having an egg or tuna sandwich today. DH is going to visit his gma again and I plan on sneaking in some violin practice, and biochem. My violin instructor is a runner. She's been very helpful so far, I'm looking forward to more.

@shanaber - who knows on the storm! I don't think they can predict that far out. We are off school Tuesday and it may be a bright and sunny day. That's happened several times over the years because it is so hard to predict. Frustrating on the carbs! I know what you mean. I've done shockingly well trying to cut sugar/carbs because I had shocked myself into it with the number on the scale. And, I hate even saying that! Why is the # so important to me! UGH!! I want to not care about the number, but I'm just not there yet. What surgery are you getting? When is it?

@Elise4270 - I will try those canned tomatoes. If I've ever bought them, they've been used in a meal with lots of spices so I wouldn't have been able to compare them. Very cool about the hummingbirds! I'm not a gardener at all.

Part of the problem with this unknown storm is I don't want to buy anything that is perishable. With Irma we were without power for at least 5 days. We didn't have a generator then, but we were able to purchase one the day before the power came on. So now, we are prepared if it does go out. But even with being able to keep frig on, preparing food would not be easy, even with our grill. So... we are probably picking up Chinese tonight. More salt!

So today I turned on Garmin Connect and got this unfriendly little message that my workout was unproductive. What?! What does that mean? So when I click on it, I'm told that since August 27th I've been unproductive and may not make any improvements. Just looked at Strava calendar and the last full rest day was the Friday prior, the 23rd. OK, Monday, tomorrow, will be a complete rest day from exercise! We were going to ride but that will be impossible with the winds. Good. A rest day! I need to celebrate it and remember I am rebuilding muscle!

I had a bad run yesterday and then wasn't really hungry although I did eat (had a terrible smoothie after my run and dinner was traditional German for my BIL).
Today I had a great run and I have been starving ever since... Had yogurt with a peach and some grape nuts on it for crunch (need to make more granola tonight), then had an avocado turkey wrap for lunch and for a post run snack I had some grapes and coffee with protein powder. You wouldn't think I would be hungry but I even added a maple cookie to my lunch cause it just wasn't enough. Dinner is leftover Chinese and a Yasso bar for dessert. Hopefully I won't be starving again at bed time...
So is hunger real or all mental or half and half? Am I hungry today because my run felt so good and I feel like I 'deserve it' or is it because I really ran harder...

@shanaber - hunger? Sometimes I wonder if I really know what it is anymore!

I went to sleep 2 nights ago and could not fall asleep because "I think" I was hungry. So got up and ate a piece of toast with crunchy PB and chocolate milk. Fell right asleep and the weight was down the next day.
The last two nights we have had Chinese - Ma Pa To Fo for me (that's how they spell it!) but it's basically tofu with a few veggies and is very spicy. It's quite good. Scale was down both mornings which was shocking - usually Mexican or Chinese will have a lot of salt and make the scale unfriendly.

Yesterday was great! I had purchased a ton of those flat hangers from Target (Joy lady on Shark Tank) and I pulled out EVERYTHING of hubby's into living room. He was working on painting. When he paints he likes beer so he started around noon, lol. I encouraged this because I knew he would agree to get rid of all the crap he has. He did! I hung what I know he wears and discarded a pile that he was to go through. On items I would question him on he would always give me a story/history. Finally I said, just say yes or no, I don't care. That made him all pouty. Sorry, but I really don't care if you want it or not, just tell me so I can hang or not!
My car, Prius, is completely filled except for the driver's seat with his stuff to give away (and 3 huge bags of hangers). One bag of hangers goes to drama dept at school along with a few things I think they could use. Even though it was a rest day I burned a ton of calories walking, etc., and I wasn't bored so there was no snacking. It feels so good to get rid of stuff. My side of the closet has been gone through over and over the past 6 years. It took me a couple years to discard everything that was too big and whenever I buy something new, I get rid of 3 things. Since I've gotten rid of so much I lowered it to 2 or 1 thing! I just want to admire the closet now!

Today it's pouring. We have both today and tomorrow off of school for Dorian. I slept in (what a treat!), ate oatmeal with cinnamon and honey, and am debating what I will do. I know I will lift. Would like to run but with lightning, no way. It actually sounds like the rain may have slowed down but since I just ate I shall lift and then decide... treadmill or outside. And on to the bathroom closets to organize/clean out towels. Although they won't fit in the car at this point! Most businesses are closed so not sure the donation center is open today so I may have to wait to drop it all off!

I need to clean out my closet, but haven't gotten the motivation to do it yet. I probably should go through my late husbands things too. At the risk of sounding like a crazy lady, he's been gone for 13 years and I haven't really touched any of his stuff. (I did make a couple of things out of some shirts for his grandchildren and a great grandchild that was born after he died.) We had his and her's walk-in closets, I don't need the space, and, in the beginning, it gave me comfort to have his things. Mentally, I could probably got through them now, just don't have the time or energy for it.

I am going to a family get-together today, so I know my food choices will be questionable. I am taking a turkey my brother bought and I cooked and some deviled eggs. Mom also cooked a turkey and is making slaw. Not sure what else will be there. But, supposedly, there will be 50 people - mostly my sister-in-laws family. I know a few of them. So, it should be an interesting afternoon. At least it is at a park in the Smoky Mountains with a stream near by. I know I'll enjoy that part.

@quilteryoyo - I don't think that makes you sound crazy. I think it is very common. When you are ready, you will do it.
Family get-togethers are tough. Are you in Tennessee?

Yes I am in TN. I live in Mosheim, near Greeneville, about half way between Knoxville and Bristol. And, the family get-together went much more smoothly than expected. As a plus, I got to see both my grand nephew and grand niece. They were born June 9th and August 1st. Too cute.

Sounds like a real win to get to see those tiny little ones @quilteryoyo! I have friends who have gone through their supposes things on when forced to because of a move or house repair, so no I don't think it is all that unusual not to deal with it if you don't have to.

@ddmom0811 - I am still working through rooms, closets and cupboards cleaning out and boxing everything so we can have all the work done on our house. I am convinced this is the wrong way to do it. We should have had someone come in and box everything as if we were going to move and then we could have weeded through everything as we put it back. I feel like I am never going to be finished! DH has taken carloads of stuff already to the donation center and I have more ready to go plus a few things I think I am going to try to sell on eBay. They are holiday crystal and now feels like a good time to give it a try. Having never used it before it will be a learning experience.

@shanaber - we redid our kitchen in Feb/March. I had to pack everything and I got rid or or gave away a ton of stuff. We ended up with more storage when with our new kitchen and as I started putting stuff away I got rid of even more stuff. I had so much tupperware/rubbermaid. For what?! I couldn't possibly store that much food at once! So I got to a minimal amount and it is still probably too much. Cup/glasses -- cleared out TONS of those. Again, am I going to have 50 people drinking at once in my house? if so, I'll buy paper cups!

I cannot believe my husband agreed to get rid of so much stuff. I'm shocked.

Eating has gone amazingly well for being at home for all these days in a row. Because I've been so busy.

I dread school tomorrow - my classroom is a computer lab and all the computers are covered in plastic bags and pushed away from windows. I have an office because I only teach 1/2 a day and do database work the rest of the day. My office is on the first floor and in a very old building (used to be the priest's office 60 years ago!) So everything was pushed to the center and lifted off the floor.

We had no damage so it's all for nothing, but thankful we got no storm. I hope the carolinas get nothing as well!

@ddmom0811 - I will be so happy, I am sure, to get all the work done but getting to where we can actually do the work feels like I am moving through peanut butter. Of course other things come up and I get distracted and then poof another day is gone or we are traveling... I know it will get done eventually one of these days but in the meantime I don't want anyone to see the inside of my house! I haven't touched the kitchen yet but I am sure we will do the same thing. I already tossed out a bunch of glasses that we never used and need to do the same with the Tupperware. We have a subset that we always use. I also have so many lids! I have no clue what they go to and am afraid to get rid of them because then I would end up with a container and no lid! I think I will toss them all and just use 1 set of newer rubbermaid I got at Costco.

Sounds like tomorrow is going to be more of a set up day with very little teaching going on other than maybe about hardware and cableing but it is good that there was no damage and not much impact at all from the storm. It looked so huge and horrible on the news and wow did the Bahamas ever get thrashed - so sad!
  • ddmom0811
    ddmom0811 Posts: 1,881 Member
@shanaber - what I did was put the lids on everything and my entire floor was covered (exaggerating a little, lol). Then I selected a few of the ones that I can use and gave the rest (or tossed what had no lid or bottom).
Did you read the Marie Kondu books? I did 2 years ago but never did it because hubby wouldn't throw out stuff.
That will help you part with it! I don't want to be a total minimalist but my house had gotten out of hand! Plus we've been in it 27 years and done very little (aka none) until now!) So stuff just PILED up!

Yes, so sad for Bahamas and I hope the Carolinas are okay. Isn't your niece or someone there?

My daughter (age 26)'s boyfriend has shingles (he is 27). I know we had a student with it last year which was unheard of in the past - he was hospitalized. Daughter is afraid she has it but she had both vaccines for chicken pox.

I'm very happy with how the scale has been moving back to where I want to be. Each day it is slightly less (.2 - I'll take it!). I feel much more in control over everything when I am managing to not overeat everyday! I know on cycling days (if over 40 miles) I have to overeat, there's no way to sustain that without lots of carbs! But ... note to self...healthy carbs!

As the summer winds down I find myself weighing more than I'd like and paying less attention to what I eat (and drink). Time to get back at it....as soon as that big bag of chocolates from Costco is gone. I suppose the faster I eat them the sooner I get back at it, right?

@ddmom0811 - does your daughter'd bf have a weakened immune system? It is so unusual for someone young to have them and not that many kids get chicken pox anymore with the vaccines. It also attacks when your immune system is weakened or you are really stressed. I had them when I was 14 (chicken pox when I was a baby) - I had rheumatic fever and the doctors said it was because my body was so weak from fighting off strep that it couldn't fight off the shingles. They are really miserable! I am terrified that I might get them again as I get older.
My niece was in So Carolina for her undergraduate school but is living in DC now.
Also we have the same issues with being in our house for so long - there are things in the cupboards that have probably been there since we moved in with more stuff just stuffed in front. I have read the 1st Marie Kondu book but also haven't implemented it but definitely working on it now.

@7lenny7 - just tell yourself you can have that chocolate after you run xx far! If I run 1 mile I get 1 chocolate, 5 miles gets you 5!

hmmmm....too late. I took @ddmom0811 's advice and they are gone.

Today I start logging again. I started the day with three eggs, scrambled, with onions, diced portabella mushrooms, chopped kale and feta cheese all cooked in some coconut oil - 305 calories.

Lunch will be two hard boiled eggs and a chicken lime cilantro burrito from Costco - 436 calories.

    Beer for an afternoon snack.

@7lenny7 - thanks I will look to see if they have anything similar at ours. So many products are local or regional that you don't find the same thing at other Costco's.

Has anyone else noticed today the lack of format and other buttons for pictures and spoiler, etc. when you post? I am not sure why I am not seeing them any longer...

@shanaber. My daughter is okay it seems, but BF has them and is in pain. Idk about immune system but sounds scary. He just started law school so he probably is stressed!

@7lenny7 - the logging makes a big difference. I’ve logged my breakfast and lunch for years but rarely any snacks and dinner. When I restarted for this 7 pounds I have logged everything.

I bought a torture device about a week ago- ab roller. Wow! That thing makes a difference. The first day I could not roll back up. The second day I could and now can do three sets of ten. It is probably in my head but I swear it is really working lower abs!

Huge pasta meal last night because of ride this morning. No dessert! I’ve been amazing myself with my chocolate willpower. But, there is nothing at home except a bag of peppermint patties and I do allow myself one of those a night. Or two.

    shanaber Posts: 6,423 Member
@ddmom0811 - I had to laugh at your description of the ab roller. I cringe whenever my trainer pulls it out but I also think to myself that I should get one to work on it at home. It definitely feels affective.

We have been busy the last couple of days getting ready for our trip so I haven't cooked much (we did bbq some brats on Thursday to have with the Packers/Bears game). We have been eating leftovers to clear out the fridge. Last night was BJs and I had an Asian salad, one of the lower calorie options on the menu (450 with half the dressing). It is shocking to me to see salads that have 1500 calories in just the salad! Wow! I hate eating out before we go on a trip and eat out for days but I also don't want to cook a bunch of food. Tonight will be more leftovers.

I also log everything, as much as I can, but it is often impossible when you are traveling to figure out what the calories are. We will have a kitchen for part of the trip so I can make some things, for sure breakfast.

@shanaber - where and how long is your trip?

I agree on the salads. Not sure if Fresh Market is a nationwide store or not. It's sort of like Whole Foods but not as big and just sells produce, meats, bakery, wine and some canned stuff. Anyway, they now post the calories on most of the desserts. Holy $#@(! It is rare for me to get any but sometimes after a huge cycling weekend I might get some type of cupcake or brownie, whatever. Some of those are 1000 calories! If I was to guess I would put 400! So you are right, estimating calories is pretty much impossible unless you double what you think it is! I just can't buy them anymore reading those calories. Same as Bahama Breeze - they list the calories on those and as much as I love chocolate I just don't want a 1500 calorie chocolate dessert. Surely the consumption of those items has gone done after posting them - which is a good! If these places would make smaller desserts/meals and charge us less it would be better for all!

Weight is definitely going down the last 2 weeks or so that I have been an OCD food logger. People have asked me how I've kept weight off for almost 6 years (they don't know I gained 6 lbs, how they didn't see it is beyond me, lol), and I always answer "it's a part time job".

I was down this AM so I'm only a pound away from my "ideal" weight. I had a chart like this when I first hit goal years ago and lost it, so decided to make a new one. I might have the numbers too low... got to see. Back then my ideal was 142 but I can't sustain that low anymore because, well I don't know exactly why. And not sure I can sustain myself at the numbers I came up with now. Plus I know I do have a lot more muscle. So it's just part of the part-time job to figure it out! I'm 5'7" BTW and I know people are 5'7" and weigh a lot less, but that's not me!

Sorry if I'm rambling away here, just kind of thinking things out. I know I seem obsessive about the scale #, but I also have a pair of pants that I keep in my closet that are my "check pants". If I can get them on and button them I am okay. I could button them with the 6 pounds I gained but couldn't breath. I tried them on and they are still tight but better!

Yesterday was a big day for calories. I consumed far more in the evening than I burned in the morning running 8 miles.

We went to a wedding for my neighbor's daughter and good Lord did they put out a great spread. After the ceremony they had cocktail hour with beer, wine, and huge assortment of meats, cheeses, crackers, olives, fruit, etc. I was starving from my run and managed to fill up on all that.

I didn't need any more food but then they moved us into the dining area where they had a great buffet of high quality dishes. Curry, pulled chicken and a smoked beef are what I can remember. I didn't need any of it but I ate all of it.

Now too the point of uncomfortable I thought I'd have the usual single piece of cake and be done. Nope! The dessert buffet was next! . Maybe a dozen different things in finger sized portions but it all looked so good you had to try it all. Now am I done? Nope! I had to walk by the dessert table to get to the coffee and on my way back 4 or 5 more sugary morsels managed to fall on my plate.

There was so much food and it was all so dang good! I could barely make it to the dance floor and when we did, I couldn't stay out there long. Fun times, and the first Sunday wedding I've been too. It was a very cool venue downtown and I'm told they got it for less then half the weekend rate since it was a Sunday.

This morning my weight was up 6 pounds! So *now* I start getting back on track.

@7lenny7 - wow, what a spread! Sounds like it was fun! It's so hard when you are starving after a long run to not eat at something like that!

You probably won't be very hungry today! So you can get back to normal eating!

I am trying really hard to eat healthy on this trip. It hasn't quite worked out great and I have (finally) realized how spoiled I am to get great fresh salads pretty much anywhere in CA. In Reno last night we went to Blaze Pizza and I got a BBQ chicken pizza. Not sure if any of you have had it but it is a super thin crust and this particular location was very skimpy on the toppings. Supposed to have onion and peppers and chicken. Well I found the chicken but little else. I also got a Cesar salad and it was literally terrible. Seriously, how can you mess up Cesar salad? The lettuce was pretty much inedible. Tonight we just wanted salads to go with the leftover pizza and mine (just a basic side salad) was a soggy inedible mess. I did run a short little run this morning and came back to scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt and a waffle from the hotel buffet courtesy of DH. Lunch was chicken tenders from KFC - not a great choice but the best of limited options in Winnemucca. I did bring celery and grapes and things for snacks along the way.

@ddmom0811 - we are headed initially to Richland, Wa which is just north of Oregon and sits right on the Columbia river. This includes a stay in Reno last night and Boise tonight. We are there a few days and then head back to Boise for a BSU football game against Portland on Saturday night and I have a HM here on Sunday. We have friends who went to PSU and they are going to meet us in Boise to go to the game so it should be really fun. Just hope I am up to running Sunday morning! We are going to stay over another night in Boise and head home on Monday/Tuesday.

@shanaber Sorry it is so hard to find healthy foods on your vacation, esp. the inedible salads. How does that happen?! Anyway, sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy and try to not stress too much over food choices.

@ddmom0811 Great job on the weight loss. I like your chart. I may need to do something similar. I'm curious if you weigh every day? I do and can go up and down 4 - 5 pounds overnight, depending on how much sodium I have consumed (and whether or not I've had a BM. TMI?). I'm 5'6" and am trying to get to 135. That may be a little overly ambitious. I'm at around 152 now - was actually 156 this morning, but that's because I had a late night, calorie and salt filled dinner last night. But is was soooo good, I'm not going to feel guilty. LOL Anyway, how did you come up with your numbers? I know you said you are still working on it, but just curious. People tell me I don't need to lose anymore, but I feel like I do. I just don't feel comfortable over 150.
