2018--Striving to Make This Year Our Best Possible

I just drink 2 cups of coffee a day with breakfast. Later in the day, I drink water or unsweetened ice tea. I do have to remind myself to drink though. I didn't develop the habit as a kid. I think today's children are much more aware of having water as a beverage than we were. We were back in CT yesterday for dental appointments. We both had cleanings. I don't recall if I mentioned that a screw fell out of the implant I got in May. The dentist told me to be careful eating on that side for a couple of weeks. In week three, I was eating some ice cream with Heath Bar pieces (DH picked the flavor) when I felt something hard in my mouth. It was the smallest screw you can imagine. I was panicked think the whole thing had failed, I spoke to the dentist the next day and he reassured me that the innards were still in my gum and just the screw came out. He wanted me to try putting it back in. No luck doing that. He had planned to check my progress at this appointment anyway. He put the screw in and it was a bit painful. I asked for some Tylenol as soon as he finished. I also found out the screw cost $70. Yikes! He tool x_Rays and said all looked good. It's supposed to heal until September and then I can have a crown placed over it. It made for a very long day. We left the Cape at 7:45 Am and got home at 9 PM. We would have been earlier but DH wanted to stop at Home Depot for some plumbing parts. He's in the middle of replacing the kitchen faucet.0

Pam - that's really promising! I hope she continues to do well.0

I love ice water! I keep a Brita pitcher on the kitchen counter along with an 18 oz plastic cup. Along with the ice machine on the frig I have ice water all day. I don't keep track of how many glasses.0

Quote from James' story on "My 600Lb Life:" Dr. Now says to James, "You don't gain weight from the air; you gain it from the food you eat." Sometimes, I feel like James.0

But the difference is you watch what you eat and hold yourself accountable. From the many episodes I've watched, most ignore his advice and printed diet. Then they lie to themselves by claiming they only cheated a little. It's pretty surprising when they expect to have lost substantial weight and are surprised to only lose a small amount or even gain weight. I root for them to be successful but most of them set themselves up for failure0

I've read a lot of commentary about what seems - from the outside, at least - to be a total lack of nutrition info and diet guidance.0 -
Maryanne--From what I have read, most of the info related to them giving nutritional info and diet guidance is cut from the show. It takes place but isn't good entertainment. I don't know that I would tune into an hour of explaining the diet and how to eat before getting to see the struggles as they put it in place.
Helene--One of the biggest things setting them up for failure are the family members who say they support the person but undermine their success. They either allow the person to manipulate the family member into providing things not on the diet, or they need to lose weight themselves or they want the person morbidly obese for some sick reason.0 -
I think it's more the first reason. The patient browbeats the family into providing the junk food choices. There are definitely some episodes where the spouse or parent wants the patient to stay heavy but those are minimal. People in the 600 pound range are often in danger of heart failure in the near future. That makes it all the more surprising that family member cave in to the whining. In some episodes, Dr Now sends over a nutritionist to help the patient set up an eating plan. Maybe he does that more often than we know but it doesn't make it into every show. A lot of those patient have serious psychological issues like child abuse. Just giving them a diet doesn't work without addressing the issues that continue to drive their eating. I don't recall if I'e ever seen the patients talk about logging what they eat. That would help them see they eat more than they think.
Maryanne, hugging cats is adorable.
Pam, How is Heather making out at home?0 -
Good morning! I’m up and ready to go for my second Prolia injection for my osteoporosis. I. About a month I’ll have a bone density exam to see if the two injections have helped.
Heather is enjoying being at home immensely. She’s very weak and tires easily, but hopefully now that she’s eating solid food again the weakness will pass. With both her husband and mom there watching her like a hawk, she’s not allowed to do much but rest. My sister will stay until Saturday, then she needs to come home. Her grandson thinks she should just send for her things and move in permanently, but the rest of her family isn’t on board with that idea, lol!
I’m officially down 11.4 ounces since January. I’m happy with that but need to keep going and try to lose another 10 pounds to really make my doctors happy. It is nice that my clothes are fitting more comfortably and I’m even wearing some things I haven’t been able to wear in a long time.
I never got into watching any of the shows y’all are discussing. For some reason, they just don’t appeal to me. I think it’s because I don’t have much patience for self-sabotage, and that’s how I view a lot of the behaviors that lead to that kind of weight gain. I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but the shows just don’t appeal to me.0 -
Pam--I am glad that Heather is enjoying being at home. After this ordeal, it will take time and patience for her to get back into normal daily activities.
I asked the doctor about the injections since I don't think the current med is doing that much. I had my bone density test yesterday. I just keep shrinking so any weight I lose just keeps me in the obese range because of height loss. Most people don't think I'm obese.0 -
Pam I have a feeling your post should have said 11 pounds, not ounces. Some times it feels like that little but I know you've been doing well. I on the other hand am down 1 pound after careful eating and logging. Like Jean, I lose very slowly. But I'm working in good habits and eliminating bad habits. I've resisted buying chips several times lately. That's a food I can't have in the house. As long as I don't buy any, I'm good. That's wonderful news about Heather's progress. Hopefully she'll continue resting, eating and getting her strength back.0
-
Helene--It would be wonderful to lose one to two pounds a week as some do but that is not a reality for us. Eliminating bad habits that result in better health is just as important as weight loss if not more.0
-
Yes, Helene, that definitely should have been pounds instead of ounces! I was in a hurry and didn’t even realize I typed ounces instead of pounds.
Jean, if your doctor does want you to try Prolia injections, be aware that they cost over $1,000 per injection and your insurance or pharmacy plan may not cover it. I’ve been told that Medicare doesn’t cover it, but I don’t know that firsthand yet. My doctor felt that since I had already been on Fosamax for years and still experienced several fractures, that Prolia was the better option for me. My current insurance covers it, but conveniently (for them), it is applied to my deductible so I end up paying for it out of pocket. There is a national co-pay program that pays up to $1500 annually, but only until you go on Medicare. I don’t know why it cuts off then.0 -
Pam--The insurance coverage is a major concern I have. There is no way I could afford it if insurance doesn't cover most of it. I'm fortunate that it does cover one of my expensive heart drugs that is around $800 a month out of pocket without insurance.
Maryanne--I'm just catching the news on CNN about the shootings in Maryland. One never knows what lies ahead when the day dawns. So terrible!
Do any of you use food scales? It seems on the message boards here that when someone complains about not losing, the first thing they question is whether the individual is using a food scale for exact measurements.0 -
We have a food scale that DH uses but it's still in one of the boxes that came back from FL. I usually work from the nutrition label as many items I use are single serving. Today I measured out 1 cup of sugar snap peas and had them with a single serve hummus. Doing both, I think I'm measuring fairly accurately. I'm not an exerciser so that probably slows things down.0
-
I use primarily single serve items and go by the info on the package, etc. If it is more than one serving such as two or three, I divide it into servings. I watched that video which showed how a half cup or a cup or whatever which specifies grams, actually can be more or less grams when weighed. It just seems like extra work.0

I have not (yet anyway) been diagnosed with osteoporosis but there seems to be some possibility that Medicare will cover prolia:

I've been trying to keep on top of my claims;l checking every couple days for their progress through the system. Bills so far have been well over $40,000 (yikes) but of course Medicare pays a fraction.

I'm sure seeing the instruction wouldn't make good tv BUT you never see them talking about anything that would lead you to think they had strict orders about what to eat. And you never see anything like Dr. Now saying show me your foods journal or show me on your phone your food logging or anything you might expect.
And yes, the family members are often horrible!!0 -

Yeah I hate this shrinking thing! I always wanted to be taller!!0 -

Another chip person here. That along with chocolate candy!0 -

What's sad is that I've never heard of that paper!!
I do use a food scale along with single serve. E.g. when I'm being good I weigh out the turkey for my lunch salad because that doesn't come in single serve.0 -

Here's hoping for continued improvement!0 -
The advocates of weighing everything even single serve are saying that even the single serve may not be the calories the package says because the gram weight when measured doesn't match what the package says.
Are we ready? I am officially down ten pounds from what I was 54 days ago. Slow process!0 -

The first is just ....silly.
The second is FANTASTIC!!!0 -
I can relate to this right now. DH is currently the designated can opener.

My BIL started to refer to our family's low brow humor as "Arendtsville humor" - that being the name of our home town in PA. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this one.

Maryanne--Love the memes and really got a laugh out of "rise and shine."
