Hello, Sarah!! You have done a great job!

I'm a retired licensed professional counselor and former school counselor. I now sub in a school system. I've lost around 40 pounds but have reached the point where the body seems to want to stay in the same 5 pound range. I have found the secret to maintaining is to weigh frequently. When I don't weigh at least twice a week, I can find the weight sneaking up.

    Ivanka defines irony:

n a Fox News interview, Trump was asked what she would say to someone who is intrigued by the Green New Deal program around a living wage and job guarantee. “I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something,” said Trump, whose job and wealth came from her father.

Nearly 80 percent of workers say they’re living paycheck to paycheck, so there’s nothing quite like hearing a lecture about the dignity of work from a woman who has never had to worry about money a day in her life.

Maryanne--I am with you on Ivanka. A reality check is in order for both her and the Donald.

That’s the same mind set that thought federal employees supported his decision to be out of work for a month or forced to work without pay. I saw very little empathy coming from the White House. They have no idea what most people go through financially.

I’d love to see Ivanka and Jared try to feed their family and get by for a week on minimum wage. They have no idea of the struggle so many go through who don’t have their advantages.

My best friend has decided to retire at the end of March. She's had her last shutdown apparently. She just decided it's ridiculous. So the IRS lost a great employee and they can thank the orange cheeto.

A friend’s daughter is weighing going back to work for Treasury in Washington. Her hesitation is over whether she could stomach working 6 years under President Dimwit, should he actually get re-elected and avoid impeachment. I imagine a lot of people are having similar debates regarding their government jobs.

I just got back from a follow up visit with my new PCP. This is my third visit and I think I like him enough to stay under his care. This was a follow up after a blood pressure medication change, which seems to be working well for me. He declared himself pleased and set my next appointment for 6 months from now. I still have to see the cardiologist and have a stress test, but I don’t anticipate any issues with that. That appointment is set for next month.

I’ m watching Michael Cohen’s testimony to Congress. It’s been riveting. I have to leave for therapy but I’m taping the rest of the hearing. It’s interesting to see the republicans more interested in pointing out Cohen’s past crimes than getting testimony about what he knows. Rep. Jordan comes through to me like a dog with a bone. Others yield their time to him so he can remind us that Cohen lied before being convicted. I think we all get the point that Cohen lied. I do think he’s telling the truth today.

Helene, I watched all but the first 15 minutes of the hearing and I agree with you. I didn’t really understand the Republican strategy. Yes, he has lied. That doesn’t automatically mean he’s lying today. I thought he was being truthful today as well. I think the Republican members were so focused on painting him as a liar that they missed a lot of opportunities to actually get answers about past events and actions. And it was clear that they weren’t even listening to his answers. I found it frustrating that they so often interrupted Cohen while he was attempting to answer a question, but I was impressed at how well Cohen kept his composure.

Only a few Republicans used their time to really question Cohen about what he knew. Cohen held up well during brutal harangues. Plus, they kept repeating the same questions like will you swear you won’t do a book deal. If it was real court, we would have heard asked and answered. I feel for his family and his remorse sounded genuine to me. I think he’s very sorry for the pain he’s put his family through.

I am extremely disappointed in my Congressman (Elijah Cummings) for not calling Mark Meadows out on his stunt during the Cohen hearings.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/28/opinion/meadows-tlaib.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

My favorite line from a Washington Post op ed piece on the same subject:

Oddest of all, this whole thing started over questions about whether Trump is a racist, which is utterly beyond debate at this point. It’s like we’re arguing about whether Harvey Weinstein really abused his power, or whether Kim Kardashian really wants to be famous. What else could Trump possibly do to convince of us of what he really thinks?

Someone control what that cat eats. The poor thing looks like she can’t turn over and stand on four feet.

Was Meadows the one with the Liar, Liar sign? Several of the Republicans came across as total bullies. They must have the same type of supporters as Trump and were playing for them. Whether they believed Cohen or not, they owed him the courtesy of allowing him to answer the questions. That whole business about Cohen seeking a White House job. Considering the short tenure of most of his White House hires, why would anyone want a job with Trump. Bringing the question up once was okay but I didn’t appreciate hearing it over and over because they didn’t like the answer. I give Cohen credit for maintaining his composure. He could have done a Kavanaugh (yelling back and tears) when the going got tough.

I wonder how the closed door hearing the next day went. Did the Republicans take it more serious since they weren’t playing to a TV audience?

Meadows was the one (with formerly racist quotes in his resume) who brought in the black Trump organization employee and forced her to stand there silently as a token example that supposedly showed Trump isn't a racist. He then proceeded to have a hissy fit when a Congresswoman suggested that that was a racist act in and of itself. Instead of calling Meadows on it Cummings (whom I've voted for many times) made her state THREE times that she wasn't calling Meadows a racist.

That’s interesting about Meadows. I must have missed that when I had to leave for therapy. It seemed to me that MD had several members on the committee. Was that true or just my perception? It seemed like 3. or 4 were from your state. Given the small size of the committee, that surprised me. Perhaps some members weren’t interested in being part of the committee?

From a CNN op ed piece that could be said to apply to Cummings as well:

    1) Biden is a creature of a totally different political time. Biden is a political anachronism. He's been in politics for almost 50 years; he was first elected to the Senate in 1972! Politics back then (and all the way through the mid- to late-1990s) was far more genteel and polite than it is now. Biden is a hail-fellow-well-met sort of guy. My guess is he has called roughly 200,000 people (NOTE: This is an estimate) a "decent guy" over the course of his political life. That doesn't mean he agrees with them. Or that he even likes them. Rather, it's a reflection of the general collegiality that reigned in politics when Biden came up in the game.
Things have changed drastically since then, however. And this kerfuffle is a sign of things to come for Biden. He is a benefit-of-the-doubt guy running to lead a party who views the other side as not just dumb and incompetent, but evil. This may be the first time who Biden is as a politician runs directly into the new governing reality of the Democratic Party.

VP Pence arrived on the island for vacation about an hour ago. This is his third year visiting around this time. Local scuttlebut is that he has a relative here that he and his wife stay with. The secret service blocks off the road where he’s staying. I assume people who can prove they live on that street are allowed through. He keeps a low profile while he’s here. Interestingly enough, he’s gotten a haircut here on previous visits. The place he goes is a hair salon. It’s in that same strip mall as my favorite deli. I go there once or twice a week.

Helen--Perhaps if you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the secret service in action. I was in Hawaii when then President Obama was leaving for the mainland. We sat on the freeway near the airport for over an hour waiting for him and his security to arrive at and depart the airport. I just wanted to go to the bathroom.
