Remember when chips came in big cans. Somewhere in my parents house there is a photo of a very young Maryanne on a picnic bench cradling one of those big cans. What can I say? Life long lover of chips!0
-
In my area, there was a company called Charles Chips. They came in yellow and brown cans. The cans were the size of the gift cans of popcorn they sell around Christmas. It was a home delivery product. I looked them up and the company started in Baltimore during the 40s. At one point, the had a factory in Mountville, PA. Maybe you remember them from that time, in the 80s? Today, they can be bought through Vermont Country Store or Amazon.0

I grew up in PA. The chips in the can in the photo were Utz.
I knew Charles Chips sounded familiar. You're right; I've seen them (but never ordered them) on the Vermont Country Store site.
My current favorites are Utz sweet potato chips.0 -
We didn’t order them either. I had them at my uncle’s house. DH didn’t remember chips in a can even though I thought I remembered seeing an empty can in the attic when we cleaned out his mom’s house.0

That’s pretty sad. Poor bird.0
-
Definitely sad about the lonely bird.
Potato chips? I don't eat them that often but there is a local brand that people love so much that they have people here ship this brand to them when moving, etc. I never could tell that much difference but since I don't eat them often, I may not have a specific taste I like.
I've been fighting a cold, but am feeling better today.0 -
the only potato chip made in West Virginia: https://misterbee.com/0 -
When I'm being good, I order the 100 calorie bags directly from Martin's chips.0

We had Cape Cod potato chips made locally about 20 years ago. They were a thicker chip kettle fried in small batches. They were sold to Snyder-Lance many years ago. I like them but prefer a thinner chip like Lay’s.0

Survivor starts tomorrow!!
We had a nice sunny day here today, although chilly. Snow tomorrow but likely will melt by Friday as the weather is supposed to warm up.
I'm ready for winter to be over even though it hasn't really been bad.0 -

My adopted home city has some peculiarities:
Lawn chair diplomacy
“Any discussion of snow in Baltimore would be incomplete without mentioning chairs,” retired librarian Ted Kruse wrote in The Baltimore Sun in 2017.
Kruse explained a somewhat peculiar habit among city folk, of leaving a lawn chair in a parking spot they have cleared to claim it as their own when their car is moved.
“The Baltimore ethic is folks who clear a spot can claim the spot,” he wrote. “Folks who do nothing to clear the spot cannot claim a spot.”
Legally, of course, the lawn chair is meaningless. On-street parking spaces belong to everybody. But do you want to be the person to tell that to your neighbor?0 -
It blows my mind to think that people (any people, let alone this many people) leave their animals behind when they rent out their homes on airbnb. You're renting to strangers people!!!!!

Leave pets behind in a place being rented? That is unsafe...for the animals as well as the renters.
I like the chair to reserve a parking place when snow is cleared.0 -

I like the chair to reserve a parking place when snow is cleared.
Quintessential Baltimore tradition!
People also use chairs to reserve a space to watch (DAYS in advance) before local parades.
Everybody and their brother was at the grocery store yesterday to stock up before the "big storm" (the fact that never in all the decades we've lived here have we been housebound more than 3 days tops doesn't seem to faze anyone)
My adopted town is a trifle strange.0 -
Today's huge storm seems to have been mostly a fizzle which I'm fine with.
For the last week or so I've been polishing off all the bad food in this house. I weighed myself yesterday morning. This morning I updated my ticker and got down to better eating (or at least lower calorie eating).
Breakfast: wonderslim pancakes with a banana mushed in
Lunch: big salad with turkey
Dinner: lean cuisine dinner and green beans
This evening I'll have a diet salty snack and a diet sweet snack
I've also got raw veggies here
I also boiled some chicken livers for protein since I didn't buy a rotisserie chicken yesterday for that (I did my week's grocery shopping early because of the supposed big storm coming - yeah, yeah, I know - out there with all the other pre storm crazies)0 -
People in Boston do that same thing of leaving a lawn chair in a parking spot they shoveled out. Maybe it’s a big city thing? They have a big parade in FT Myers each February to celebrate Thomas Edison’s accomplishments. He wintered in FT Myers for many years. Weeks in advance, people use tape to mark out their viewing spaces on the sidewalks. And people respect other people’s marked spaces. In an uncivilized world, it’s lovely to see this tradition honored.
Looking forward to Survivor. Thanks for posting the link about how they make the show. It was a fascinating story.0 -
Survivor opening night:
Reem was such an easy first vote. She just didn't get that her team didn't want a mom. But boy, arriving on the island at the end? What a scary, scary moment for someone. It seems to me most people would quickly say "you know, there's no way I'm winning this, I'm outta here". Jeff thinks *see his interview" that even people who think that may go on to think "I want to see what I'm made of". I guess that makes sense but only if you're self worth depends on being able to be Robinson Crusoe. We'll see. There are spoilers out there about how many people opt for the island and how many leave.
