I woke up yesterday with a really bad sore throat which I still have today. I made an appointment to see the PA at my doc’s office later today to make sure it’s not strep. It feels, like I’m swallowing shards of glass every time I swallow. And I’m losing my voice, which DH doesn’t seem to mind at all, lol!

We are supposed to be going down to Houston tomorrow for our niece’s first birthday, but I think I will let DH go without me this time. If it’s strep, for sure I won’t be going. I’m thinking it’s more likely that it’s sinus drainage since the pollen counts are very high right now, but will, get tested for strep just to be sure.

Pam - sounds like you've got similar symptoms to what DH has. He says for the first time he gets why I hate sore throats. After about 3 days he's definitely improving. Here's hoping you feel better soon!

The strep test was negative but the PA still felt it could be strep based on my symptoms. She also said it might be viral and if so it should begin to improve after 3 days. She sent in a prescription for amoxicillin that I’m to fill tomorrow if I don’t start showing any improvement. This was the first time I’ve seen the PA and I liked her a lot. This practice is really well run. I’ve never waited more than 5 minutes past my scheduled appointment time, and once I’m in an exam room, it usually is no more than 2 or 3 minutes before the doctor or PA comes in. I really appreciate that they consider my time valuable as well as their own.

This will sound strange but the best relief for a really sore throat is potato chips. I had my tonsils taken out in my twenties.. afterwards, I had the worst sore throat of my life. The ENT surgeon told me to eat potato chips. I was skeptical and thought the chips would scratch my throat on the way down. Actually, they get mushy and the salt soothes the throat on the way down. It gets deeper than gargling with salt water and tastes better. You have to watch the portion and stop when your throat feels better. Try it and see what you think.

Permission to eat potato chips? Now I'm hoping for a sore throat.

    (well, not really)

Daggone it, I'm getting DH's cold. I should know better than to even joke about getting a sore throat! If I do get this, it will be my first cold since being diagnosed with high blood pressure. That means no decongestants (I'd already given up pills because they made my heart race but was still using the nasal spray). This could get nasty.

I'm working hard to get the next CROM newsletter done. Finished 2 pages last week. Did 4 more yesterday. 2 left. It doesn't help that I did a whole page yesterday and then started over because I decided I didn't want to go where I'd gone.

I need to get back on the treadmill but I just didn't have it in me last evening.

    Love the introverts pic!

I’m feeling a bit better today. My throat isn’t as sore, but my nose has started to run so I guess I’ve just got a cold at this point. The PA I saw yesterday recommended Flonase spray, but that gives me nose bleeds, so she suggested that I just use a saline nasal spray instead to help flush out and lubricate my nasal passages. I’m almost completely voiceless today.

DH is getting ready to leave for his trip to Houston for our niece’s birthday party. I feel well enough to go, but don’t really want to, so I’m staying home. I think I will recover better at home plus I don’t want to expose everyone to my germs. That’s my story anyway!

Maryanne, DH has high by. Corisidin HBP for a cold. It works well for congestion and runny nose without raising his blood pressure.

I’m definitely feeling better. I had a burst of energy tonight and spent 2 hours purging my closet. I was fairly ruthless and got rid of a huge pile of clothes that either no longer fit, never felt or looked good on me, or no longer fit my lifestyle. I tried on a bunch of them and only put back a few items. I’ve needed to do this for a long time and I’m so glad to have that done! Now to start on the cabinets and linen closets. Thinking about moving has motivated me to at least start on clearing out some of the stuff I don’t need anymore.

Helene - I looked at the ingredients to the various coricidin options as I figured that was a good list of safe ingredients. And they are all things I already have here so I'm good!

Pam - you must be feeling better if you're decluttering!

I’m feeling better, but my voice has been MIA for 3 days now. I keep forgetting that it’s gone and trying to speak to neighbors, etc., only to realize that I can’t speak loud enough for them to hear me from across the street or in the next yard. Hopefully they see my lips moving and assume I’m saying hello or returning their greeting.

Yesterday I got out of the house for most of the day. I got my nails done which was overdue, then went to the donation center to get rid and of all the clothes I had cleared out of my closet. Then I went over to Kohl’s and used up my Kohl’s cash to get a new wallet. That worked out well as I got my wallet without paying anything for it. From there I went to a very nice shopping area and tried to buy a pair of shoes for my NYC trip. They didn’t have my size but ordered them for me from their warehouse. I’m hoping they will be comfortable for walking and not make my toes hurt. I shopped a bit in a few other stores, had lunch, and finally came home. It was a nice day and one I enjoyed. When DH is home I don’t do much shopping like that. Except for the shoes, I didn’t actually spend much money despite being gone most of the day and shopping in quite a few stores.

Pam, that sounds like my kind of day. I’ve always preferred shopping solo. I can browse around without having to conform to anyone else’s timetable. I like having lunch with a friend but I’m okay dining alone too. I’m not a big shopper. I like to go just 2-3 times a year. I bulk shop for whatever I need. Good to hear you’re feeling better. You made a good decision to stay home. With no voice, visiting wouldn’t be much fun.

I guess I'm contributing to the demise of retail. I can't remember the last time I went to a store other than a grocery store. DH goes to the drugstore for less expensive prescriptions but mine are (up until now anyway) so cheap no matter where I go that I get them at the grocery store.

I do enjoy shopping, under the right conditions. I shop better alone for clothing. I tend to get talked into buying things that aren’t really right for me when I’m with certain people, so I’ve learned not to bring them with me when I’m clothes shopping. For household items or gifts for others I can shop well with others, though. I prefer to shop when the weather is pleasant and take my time, and I definitely have some favorite stores that I enjoy browsing through even when there is nothing specific I need. However, I don’t do that very often because that can result in unplanned and unnecessary purchases.

I have a Super Target near me and that is probably where I shop most often. I much prefer it over WalMart, though DH prefers WalMart. Target has a good grocery section as well as almost everything else I need, so I can usually get it all in one stop there.

After getting Amazon Prime last year as part of a promotion when we changed cable and internet providers, I have done a lot more on-line shopping, too. You certainly can’t beat the convenience and some things are quite a bit cheaper. Since we have several Amazon warehouses in the area, I can often order an item and have it the next day, which is nice.

Since I wear a hard to find shoe size, I’ve ordered shoes on-line from Zappos for years. Again, hard to beat the convenience and their prices are almost always lower than local, even if I could find my size locally. And again, when I order from them, I usually have the shoes the next day. And if they don’t fit or aren’t quite right, Zappos pays the shipping to return them and the process is very easy.

My voice is still not back to normal, but I’m feeling ok despite a cough and some nose blowing. DH gets back tomorrow so maybe I’ll be able to talk by then. It’s a rainy day here, so I’m staying in.

I got Prime last year. I too love the convenience of it. I ordered a number of capri pants from them. It’s hard to find variety in retail but Amazon had lots of colors, styles and fabrics to choose from. I watched some of the Prime movies and some of my favorite old TV shows on Prime. I love Target best too. We have three within a thirty minute drive in FL. We had none on the Cape but rumor has it that a Target is going into part of the space Sears moved out of. It won’t be a Super Target though. The Cape is pretty resistant to big box stores. Home Depot and Walmart had to move into vacated anchor spaces. They are smaller version of their normal sizes. I call them Home Depot lite for example.

Spring has sprung in Maryland. Daffodils and forsythia are blooming as are the early blooming trees. And DH turned on the central air (surprised the heck out of me). We have to enjoy it quick because spring is usually about a week.

That’s a week more than we get on Cape Cod. It’s generally cool, damp and raw until the end of May. That’s why we stay in F L unto May.

Before he went to bed DH turned the heat back on. But the upstairs window units are still running. Umm, dear, heat rises you know. Aren't we wasting mega bucks here? Pumping out heated air on the first floor to rise up to the second floor to be sucked out by window AC units? LOL!

How did men ever get in charge of the world?

Women must have taken a day off. Men jumped in and never gave control back to where it belonged. LOL

My DH resists turning on the air as long as possible, or until he can’t take my complaining any longer, whichever comes first! Sometimes I just do it myself if he’s being particularly resistant. Our weather is so crazy here. We will have highs in the upper 80’s and possibly low 90’s this week, but a rainy cold front is expected over the weekend and we will probably need the heat again then. We’ve had rain the last 3 weekends, with lovely sunny and warm week days. For us retirees, it’s been great, but the working folks and kids haven’t had a nice weekend in awhile and won’t get one this coming weekend either.

I’m still trying to get over whatever hit me last week. No sore throat any longer, but I’m still coughing and don’t have much voice. I was completely voiceless for about 4 days, but it is coming back somewhat now. Don’t really feel bad, but I am tired of coughing.

On Saturday I thought I was going to go mad from the 24/7 ever present tickle in my throat. I decided to start taking cough capsules every 6 hours religiously and it's gotten much better. I've gone to every 8 hours now. Thank goodness I can still take those even though I can't take decongestants. That plus claritin is getting me through. I'm going through a lot of bottle of cough gel caps because there are only 20 in a bottle. I just can't cope with liquid cough medicine.
