The FBI raided the homes (plural) and several non profits and individuals (including a lawyer) associated with Baltimore's mayor. This city sure can pick 'em.
Apparently there is no provision in the city's constitution for impeachment. I bet that will change.0 -
In the frozen aisle, Birdseye steamer vegetables, Green Giant and I think Food Club (house brand). I forget the name of the brand I get in the produce section. They also do broccoli slaw and pea pods. They carry the broccoli and a mix of carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. I buy all those brands up north. My choices are more limited down here. We have 2 small independent markets on island. I have to drive into town to go to Publix or Target.0

I buy frozen brussel sprouts but a lot of the others I just don't like. I had a frozen steamer bag of broccoli and cauliflower last evening and the taste and texture were nothing to write home about, at least not compared to freshly steamed broccoli and cauliflower.0
-
I’ve never really been a fan of the steamer bag veggies because I’ve always thought they were overpriced compared to simply buying frozen veggies in the regular bags. I just portion out whatever frozen veggie I’m having in a glass bowl with a lid, add a little water, then nuke for 3-4 minutes. I can mix up several kinds or have a single type of veggie. I usually drain off the water and add a little butter, salt and pepper and I’m done. Seems to work well for all the veggies so far.0

The cardiologist wants me 15 pounds lighter than I was Monday by the time I see her in September. I got started this week. I'm doing pretty well on food. I'd give myself about a 7 out of 10 as I work back into it. I've been on the treadmill each day. I'm watching My 600-lb life. I'm still on Season 5. Luckily all the seasons are available for purchase on my Kindle Fire tablet.
I've also put Bosch and The Good Fight on my tablet and made several attempts to get into those but so far, it's not working. I don't know why.0 -
Bosch was a little slow to get into. Maybe it’s because they combined a few books into a single season. Stick with it. It sucks you in a few episodes in. I just started binge watching Killing Eve. Sandra O won the Golden Globe playing Eve. It’s on AMC Sunday nights. They did a season 1 marathon the weekend they were starting season 2. I think you’d like it.
I bought an air fryer at Ollie’s. I did French fries in it and they were so crispy. I did grilled cheese sandwiches today. They were crunchy outside and melty cheese inside. It took 4 minutes per side and wasn’t greasy. I’m going to try roasting veggies in it. I’ll have to buy some Brussel sprouts and carrots. I’ll let you know how they come out. I can see myself using the air fryer every day.0 -
Helene, my sister loves her air fryer. I’ve been tempted to get one, but I can’t figure out where I’d store it, and I already have too much stuff cluttering my countertops so I’m reluctant to add another appliance to that.
DH left today for a missions trip to Guatemala. I’m not thrilled about it, given the State Department’s warnings about travel to that country, but he was determined to go. Hopefully, all will be well. He will be gone a week.
I’m going shopping tomorrow with a friend to a local outlet mall. It’s a little bit of a drive, but has some good stores, so it should be a productive trip. Plus, I have a couple of shirts to exchange or return that I bought on-line, and they have a physical store at this mall so it will be easier than packing them up and shipping them back. I’m hoping they will have the same shirts in the size I need. I ordered my usual size, but these shirts were huge. I definitely need to size down in this style. Chico’s sizing can be a little weird, but I almost always wear a size 1 in their tops. These were very boxy and way too long on the shoulders and huge under the arms. Hopefully the size 0 will be a better fit, if they have them in the store.0 -
Maryanne--Bosch is difficult to get into if you have not seen the previous seasons.
Helene--I haven't been in Ollie's for a long time. Perhaps I need to revisit it.
Pam--A size 0. I can't imagine that size. Good going! The smallest I can remember is a size 12 or 14 when I weighed 135.0 -
Jean, Chico’s using a different sizing method than other stores. Their sizes range from 00 to 3, which roughly translates to extra small to XXL, I think. So when I say I wear a 0 or a 1, it’s really a small or medium, depending on the cut of the top.0

Jean, a new Ollie’s just opened in Ft Myers last month. I’d been to Ollie’s whenever I visited my brother on way way to and from FL. He lives near Myrtle Beach. The air fryer takes up a fair amount of counter space but I can probably put away some other things that I have on the counter now. It’s versatile enough that I could use it every day. And the food is healthier because you get a fried effect without using added oil. I got a great buy as well. Ollie’s advertised it at $60 and I had an online coupon for 25% off on item. I’ve seen for them other places for around $100 so $45 was a great deal. There are tons of online recipes for it too.
Pam, I hope all goes well with DH’s missionaries trip. What will he be doing there? One of our choir members just got back from a 2 week medical mission in Honduras. She described it as a life changing experience.0 -
DH was very vague about any and all details on this trip. I’m not sure if he genuinely didn’t know the details or if he was deliberately being vague thinking the less I knew, the less I would worry about him. I know they flew into Guatemala City and were being picked up by the husband and wife missionary team they will be helping, then driving about 100 miles to the mission where they will be doing some unspecified work for the next week. I have an emergency contact number if I need to get in touch with him, but don’t expect to hear directly from him because cell phone rates are very expensive there. Supposedly, the missionaries they will be helping say their area is safe and they have not had any problems, so I’m hoping they are being truthful and that the situation in their area is stable.
I had a nice day shopping with my friend. I was able to exchange the 2 shirts for the smaller size and found a very cute shirt and pants for a very good price. Then we went over to the Talbots outlet store and I found another cute top for an excellent price as well. I also found a pair of slippers in the Clarks outlet in my size in their clearance section for an excellent price, so all in all, I thought it was a very successful outing. My friend was also successful, finding several things she had specifically been looking for to round out her wardrobe. She’s very short, so finding flattering clothes that don’t require a lot of alterations can be difficult for her. And, her foot is even smaller than mine, so we were both shocked to find some shoes in our size at the Clarks outlet. We had a nice lunch after shopping, then headed home. Her DH is in very poor health, so getting away from home for more than an hour or two is difficult for her, but today he was doing pretty well and she was able to enjoy the time away.0 -
Your friend probably needed that bit of time away from home as a respite. How nice that both of you had success in your shopping trip. It sounds like you could shop the Clark’s online site. They probably have more choices in your size than you find in the stores.0

Pam - sounds like you had a nice trip. Here's hoping everything is stable in Guatemala!!0

Running Out of Children, a South Korea School Enrolls Illiterate Grandmothers
As the birthrate plummets in South Korea, rural schools are emptying. To fill its classrooms, one school opened its doors to women who have for decades dreamed of learning to read.

Given my Hamilton near-obsession I picked up on this:
“An immigrant who arrived, thank God, before the country was full.” — Ron Chernow on Alexander Hamilton0 -
For once there's an advantage to being ancient:
People vaccinated in the United States since 1989 would most likely have received two doses of the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot under federal guidelines, and that is still considered the standard for protection.
Anyone vaccinated between 1963 and 1989 would likely have received only one dose, with many people immunized in the earlier years receiving an inactivated version of the virus. Americans born before 1957 are considered immune as they would have been exposed to the virus directly in an outbreak.0 -
I lost half a pound last week. I guess I need to tighten up some more.0
-
I had measles, mumps, chicken pox and scarlet fever as a kid. Coming from a large family, if one of us got it,we all got it. So I guess I’m in the immune group.0
-
I’m in the group assumed to be immune, however, I never got measles or mumps. My mom would send me over to play with neighborhood kids who had those illnesses, thinking it was better for me to get it and get it over with, but I never caught either one. I hope I have retained the ability to fight off those germs!0
-
Helene - scarlet fever wow?
Pam - I wonder if you should ask your doctor if you should get vaccinated?
DH and I are up on everything except the newest shingles vaccination. That's still in iffy supply around here.
My sister and I are two years apart. Whenever one of the childhood diseases came through I always got a light version so it was mostly a fun vacation from school. My sister, OTOH, got deathly ill. The roles never switched. I'm sure she wasn't amused.0 -
The University of Maryland Medical Center received a historic delivery at its Shock Trauma heliport last week: a human kidney, delivered by drone. The first-of-its-kind delivery was made by the LG-1,000, a 50-pound drone created by the university's School of Medicine specifically to transport organs, CBS Baltimore reports. The kidney was successfully transplanted into the patient, a 44-year-old woman who had been on dialysis for eight years, after the April 19 drone flight. The drone monitored the organ's status during the 2.8-mile journey from the Living Legacy Foundation in west Baltimore. Researchers say using drones for delivery could revolutionize the organ transplant process, in which delays sometimes cause an organ to be unviable.
Before the flight, researchers conducted test flights with blood tubes and eventually a healthy but non-viable kidney, USA Today reports. "There remains a woeful disparity between the number of recipients on the organ transplant waiting list and the total number of transplantable organs," project head Joseph Scalea said in a statement. "This new technology has the potential to help widen the donor organ pool and access to transplantation." Scalea, one of the surgeons who carried out the transplant, praised the "outstanding collaboration" between "surgeons, engineers, the Federal Aviation Administration , organ procurement specialists, pilots, nurses, and, ultimately, the patient." The current system, he said, takes "too long, it is unsafe and it is way too expensive."0 -
That’s amazing about using drones for organ transportation. That could be a game changer. We’re up to date on everything but the Shingrex shot too. I checked about 2 months ago and due to a nationwide shortage, none was available at CVS. If you hear of it becoming available, let me know. We had voice mails that our primary care doctor has left the practice and we need to select new doctors. That’s on my to do list when we get home. I.m bummed out because I really liked her. She was a doctor who actually listened to patients.0
-
My primary care doctor is not that great and always has a multi hour weight. So I see the nurse practitioner and make sure I have great specialists for every body part. LOL!
We were on a waiting list at Safeway but they told DH they tossed it. (Say what?) The pharmacist at the Giant grocery store said they've had the shingrix fairly reliably for the last several months. I'm sort of worried about getting the first shot and not being able to get the second so decided to wait a little longer. I see the nurse practitioner in May and will see what she has to say. A year ago she was thinking they'd start carrying it. They didn't carry the first shingles vaccine because it had to be stored frozen. I finally got that one at a passport place of all things.0 -
I got the original shingles shot at least a decade ago. I had to go to an independent drugstore to get it.
My doctor didn’t have it and the chain drugstores didn’t either. My health care center gets a lot of support from the Feds and they make them carry the original pneumonia shot rather than Prevnar. I doubt they carry either version of shingles vaccines.0 -
I’ve had a hard time finding the shingles vaccine as well. I’m supposed to be on waiting lists at several pharmacies and my doctor’s office, but so far no calls to come and get the shot. I’ve already had shingles once and really don’t want another bout with it, so I’m very motivated to get the vaccine.
My new PCP is pretty good. I’ve seen him 3 times so far and his NP once, and I’ve never waited more than 5 minutes past my appointment time to be called back to an exam room. And after the medical assistant does her thing, the doctor or NP is usually in the room in 2 or 3 minutes. Quite a change from my previous doctor where I often waited 20 or more minutes just to get called to an exam room, and then another 15 minutes for the doctor.0 -

Your PCP sounds like a keeper. I’ve never had shingles but I was in fear until I got the original shot. It felt like a weight off my shoulders. I’m not on anyone’s list but I’ll look into that when we get home.0
-
The reason I now see the nurse practitioner at my internist is I usually waited two or three HORUS for the actual doctor. Around here 20 or 30 minutes is fantastic.0
-
I have had the new shingles shot and its booster that you have to wait a few weeks to get.
I have seen nurse practitioners as well as physician's assistants. At the cardiology practice, after you are "stable," you go back twice a year with one appointment with the NP and one with the cardiologist. The urologist I see uses a physician's assistant.
Last Saturday, I went to Costco in Columbus to have my hearing tested and to get new hearing aids. I go back on May 11. They do a great job at a tremendous savings. They did a hearing test that was more detailed than what I got at Beltone and one at a non-chain hearing aid practice.0 -
Good deal on the hearing aids. Have you checked your supplemental health insurance for hearing aid coverage? DH has Blue Cross and they have coverage every 2-3 years. We talked about it last November at a BC health fair so I don’t remember the exact time frame. I was surprised there was any coverage. He got his hearing aids in December. We called to have them mail the forms to FL and never got them we decided to wait until we get home to call again. I think the coverage was around $1600; a far cry from what we spent but enough to make it worth putting in the paperwork. I hope you plan has some coverage.0
