They didn’t really want to drain the swamp. They just wanted to fill it with their own alligators.

That guy really sounds like a horrible human being. No wonder trump wants to appoint him. Two of a kind.
DH is due home in a couple of hours. We are having thunderstorms this morning, so his plane may be delayed a bit, but I’m sure they will all be glad to be back home. I hope he doesn’t choose to go back next year.0 -
Orioles need to focus on catching the ball? Really? Aren't they being paid for this????
"Really encouraged by a lot of our bullpen arms," Hyde said. "I thought we threw the ball really good out of the pen, and I thought today was a little bit of a hiccup for us defensively that we need to get back to and really focus on catching the ball. The main thing is how well our bullpen guys threw." manager Brandon Hyde
I could manage that well.0 -

Helene--I think you are right; it takes one to know one.
Maryanne--Draining the swamp? If not alligators then crocodiles...no big difference.
Helene--I got my original hearing aids at Costco 5 years ago after reading all the great reviews. They were great and saved me around $3500 over what I was quoted by different vendors here. Costo does not operate on a commission so that is another plus. I do have insurance that covers hearing aids but in a limited manner. You have to go to one of their providers who then will send the prescription to them to fulfill and then send to you.
The ones at Costco will cost me $1600 if I get the Costco re-branded ones which is still cheaper than what I would have paid with so-called insurance coverage. Costco will do what they call real ear measurement, which means they check your hearing with the new hearing aids and make adjustments where needed.
I have a three-year warranty on these from Costco but one year with the other. Costco gives you 180 days to wear the hearing aids or "try out" at which time you can return them for a refund. There is a two-year loss coverage included which means they will replace at no cost the lost hearing aid. Costco is a no brainer as they also have other brands from which to choose based upon what you desire, etc. With this, if the Costco re-branded ones don't do the job, you can go back and return them and get a different brand and model. Obviously with this type of liberal coverage, they probably make sure you get a good model.
I read the reviews on the model I am getting and the reviews were overwhelmingly good. Yes, there were some negatives as with anything, but I'm interested in saving $1000 which is what a "name brand" next step would have added to the cost. If they work, $1000 can do much elsewhere. If not, then back to Costco I go. I'm not dealing with the $5000 vendors who are interested in lining their pocket and business pocket.0 -
Oh this is good! I'm watching "My 600 Lb Life: Where are They Now?" In a flashback, the woman talks about throwing out food bad for her including the food which the nutritionist told her had too many carbs. I recognized the containers. Good bye-Nutrisystem!0

This is so me!0 -
I saw on the news tonight that trump’s nominee for the Federal Reserve has withdrawn his name. Thank goodness!0

I saw that too.surprisingly Republicans told him he wouldn’t get confirmed. It’s about time some of them found their backbones.
Jean, that sounds like a good deal from Costco.0 -

I'm just starting season 5 of My 600-lb life (getting back on the treadmill). For the first time ever that I can recall, an episode where the person getting the surgery (actually persons it's about twins) was actually shown counting calories. Dr. Now had prescribed "a 1200 calorie diet".
The absolutely horrid histories these poor folks have makes me sad. I'm a sucker for children and pets. You do not hurt either.0 -
When I watch the show, I wonder how they got to such a weight. Then you hear their story and find out many were abused or they come from dysfunctional families. Most lack a support system and family members who are around are enablers, big time. I recently watch the episode about James. He was the only person I can recall who followed Dr Now’s instructions. He told James to lose 50 pounds in a month and James lost 53. He had one small slip up but got right back on track. If you hadn’t seen that episode, look for it.0

One of the little gems via this link: Dr. Now was sued for divorce and had to pay 70% of his assets.

The twins both lost what they were supposed to (their weight loss at each weigh in was almost scarily similar).
I remember James. Believe it or not I have the episodes on a spreadsheet and I'm checking them off. It helps me track who has followup episodes coming up.0 -

I know I've read a lot of that information but I didn't know this.
In case you were wondering, the scale in Dr. Now's office goes up to 900 pounds, according to TLC.

That was a very interesting article about Dr Now and the show. I sometimes wonder if the patient has ever watched the show. They seem surprised when he tells them they have to lose X number of pounds on their own before he’ll consider surgery. Or that they can be kicked out of the program for non compliance. I knew he was up in years and I wonder if there will be anyone to take his place if he retires or dies. These super obese people don’t seem to have other options if he stops operating.0
-
Helene--I definitely understand why Dr. Now requires them to lose the weight before surgery. After all, they have to follow a plan after surgery and we know that is not easy. I know many think it is a "quick fix," but habits need to be changed.
I was just reading the Jenny Craig site. There certainly isn't anything cheap about their food. I think I read the average cost is about $20 a day. I'm like the 600 Lb people; I'm looking for something to jump start me and works.0 -
I've have signed up for JC numerous times over the years if not for the "counseling". I'm convinced - with of course no evidence other than reading the internet - that the "counselors' are just salesmen.
I've got quite a bit of JC food in the basement (from ebay) and I've been working on cleaning out my freezer because a woman we help with her (monumental) TNR efforts in South Carolina has offered to sell me frozen food.0 -
I've a fan of David Baldacci but for some reason never read the Myron Bolitar books. I was looking for something to listen to in the car and ordered the first one. I liked it! Interesting story. Laugh out loud dry humor in places. Ordered the rest of them.0

I'm in shape and the shape is round also. I must be very tired. I went to bed to read and fell asleep. According to the FitBit, I now have slept over 9 hours, including last night.
I need to go get groceries but I avoided today because it is the first Saturday of the month, a time stores are crowded with those just receiving their checks.0 -
The Bolitar books are by Harlan Coben. I guess that’s how you missed them. I’m looking forward to the new Amos Decker book. I think that’s one of Baldacci’s best series.0
-
Oops, wrong author. I do read Harlan Coben but not as religiously so you're probably right.
I devoured Redemption in about 2 days.0 -
I keep the Kindle Unlimited program busy as I use it to the max.0

I started trying to be "good" today.
Maryanne--"We must stop eating" meme is very appropriate. In this era of conflicting info on what approach is best, sometimes "eating another" is hard to avoid. My knees are hurting so exercise isn't luring me right now.0 -
I’m very tired today. I spent Friday baking 3 different types of cookies to take on a girlfriend mini getaway and for DH who needed a dessert to take to a church gathering tonight. Yesterday morning my 6 girlfriends and I met and drove over to an area near downtown Dallas called Uptown that is a very vibrant, upscale area where mostly young professionals live and play. We stayed in a Hilton Canopy Hotel, which was very nice, but a very busy place yesterday because they had 2 very large wedding parties staying there. When we were trying to check in, it seemed as if chaos reigned in the lobby, but things eventually got sorted out. Our rooms weren’t ready but we were able to leave our luggage and then we headed off to explore.
There is a free trolley system in that area, so we hopped aboard and rode it to the downtown area where we got off at the Dallas Museum of Modern Art. On the first Saturday of every month, they have free admission to the Nasher Sculpture Garden, so we got a little culture by exploring the garden and viewing the sculptures, then we walked a couple of blocks to Klyde Warren Park, which is a beautiful park that was built over a highway on one side of downtown Dallas. We enjoyed a lovely lunch outdoors on a patio while listening to a very skilled guitarist who was playing nice music, and watched people enjoying absolutely gorgeous weather in the park.
After lunch we waited eons for the trolley to head back to the hotel. After 45 minutes we gave up and called for a couple of Uber’s and went back to the hotel. Our rooms still weren’t ready, so we headed up to the rooftop bar at the hotel where they specialize in “craft” cocktails. We each ordered one off their menu, but none of us were overly impressed by them. They seemed to just be a random concoction of whatever booze was handy. Nobody ordered a second, lol! Once we got into our rooms, we unpacked and set up our own happy hour with wines and snacks we had all brought. We put up our feet and spent time talking, drinking and eating for awhile and watched the running of the Kentucky Derby, then went down to the hotel’s complimentary happy hour at the bar in the lobby. They were serving a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc but I didn’t care for it. I usually like those, but this one just didn’t appeal to me, so after a couple of sips I donated it to one of my friends who did like it.
At this point, one of our friends who had recently had surgery was picked up by her husband because she didn’t feel up to spending the night. The rest of us set out to find a restaurant for dinner. We stopped in one place but weren’t very happy with the menu. However, since we had already been seated and ordered drinks, we went ahead and ordered a couple of appetizers and enjoyed those. Afterward we walked around a bit more and eventually ended up in another restaurant where we ordered hamburgers and sweet potato fries and shared those since we weren’t that hungry after having appetizers beforehand. After this we returned to the hotel and went back to one of the rooms. We talked more and played a few rounds of Scattergories, but none of us were enjoying that game too much so we called it a night at that point and went to bed. It was midnight by then, so it was time, even if we had been enjoying the game, lol. I had stopped drinking alcohol after the few sips in the hotel lobby because I didn’t want to feel bad today, and I’m glad I did.
The bed was extremely comfortable, but neither I nor my roommate slept well. The hotel had a very nice breakfast buffet which was included in our rate, so we all enjoyed that before heading home. I’ve been relaxing all afternoon, and predict an early night for me tonight! I really enjoy spending time with all of my women friends, and these occasional getaways are really fun. This one was a bit pricey for one night, but not something we do very often so it was worth it.0 -
Pam, your getaway sounded fun. It may have been short in time but packed with fun activities. Did DH give you any details on the mission trip? I see he made it home unscathed.
We were at my sister’ Several days. DH was building her a new set of stairs into her house. It was only 2 steps but the old ones were rickety and had no railing. We got back last night and ended up with cold showers. The water heater sprung a leak and will need replacing. We’d planned to start our drive on Wednesday but may be delayed a day or two depending on the plumber’s availability and how long replacement will take.0 -
Pam - that sounds like a lot of fun! I'm glad your husband made it home.
Helene - what a PITA to have your timing depend on a plumber!
I lost 2 pounds last week. Sort of surprised me as I wasn't perfect even on the imperfect plan I tried to follow for the week.
Anyone who thinks calories and weight loss are linear is I think full of hokum. Obviously calories matter but it's not linear. It's got to be much more complicated than that.
The 600-lb life episode I'm watching from season 5 (Doug) is the second Season 5 I've watched and in both there is talk of calories. I'm wondering if this is a new theme for Season 5 or just a coincidence. Anyway Doug's wife seemed to be watching his calories carefully in his first month and he only lost 28 pounds. There were no scenes or mentions of cheating not to say he didn't. But they were quite surprised and Dr. Now was quite disappointed.
