Helene--So sorry that you are not well. Feel better soon!

Maryanne--That was a good get together even if there was a mix up on the correct place.

Pam--I hope you get some good sleep soon.

Feeling almost human today so I can skip going to the doctor. I’m coughing a bit but not as often and not so deep. I rescheduled a manicure for today and I think I’ll keep the appointment. I was coughing too much Friday to expose the manicurist to my germs. I‘ve had this a week so I’m sure I’m passed being contagious. I haven’t left the house since last Wednesday.

I slept well for the last 2 nights, so I’m feeling human again as well. I don’t know how people with insomnia can function based on how I felt after just a couple of nights of poor sleep.

Today I’m getting laundry done and seeing what I can check off my list for Friday night’s dinner party. I got the cake layers baked yesterday and in the freezer, so that’s one item done. Freezing the cake layers actually helps to increase the moisture, so doing them ahead of time is a good thing. I hate dry cakes! I’ll thaw them and frost and decorate on Thursday which will give the flavors time to mature and blend. She requested lemon, so I made lemon cake and plan to fill between the layers with lemon curd and frost it with lemon cream cheese frosting. That sounded like a good summertime cake to me.

The cake sounds delicious. Lemon is such a refreshing flavor.

Maryanne--Hope that dental appointment is soon!

Nothing new. Just another day of rain and more the rest of the week. That is about all it has done in May and June. Some farmers are having difficulties with their crops as it isn't good planting weather with the continued rains and winds.

You know you're not feeling well when you start to put a jar of salsa in the microwave instead of the refrigerator.

DH saw the dentist first thing Monday morning and got prescriptions for oxy and antibiotics. Hopefully things are starting to kick in. We laugh about them turning into big whiny babies .....but.....they turn into big whiny babies. LOL!

I need to hit the grocery store and get that out of the way so that I will be able to load for this weekend's cat show. We left Bonnie's van loaded after the last show so that's one thing I don't have to do. We're supposed to have decent weather this weekend. Of course this time of year a day without a threat of a late day thunderstorm doesn't exist.

DH caught whatever I have. Lucky I’m near the end because I will be taking care of the patient. He took good care of me so I’ll do my part even if whining shows up.

One of the upsides of working at home that had never occurred to me ahead of time is not catching "stuff" from co-workers. Of course I still end up with whatever DH's co-workers have. DH is worried he is coming down with something on top of having an abscessed tooth. I'm really, really hoping not. We have a cat show this weekend.

Helene--Hope both of you feel better soon.

It is odd but I work in an environment in which all kinds of bugs run rampant. I may have sneezed but I didn't have a bad cold last school year.

When I worked at the library, I rarely got sick. I think my immune system was at peak because I was exposed to so many people. Now that I’m retired, I don’t see that many people so I think my immune system has gotten lazy.

Maryanne, I’ve been meaning to ask if you recovered from the shingles. I hope it’s gone and that it didn’t leave any pain behind.

I can still feel on my face where some of the bumps were but no pain or itchy. The last thing to stop hurting was my scalp. I would probably be safe to go get Shingrix now. But I've spent the week working, getting ready for this weekend's cat show and fighting with Verizon (I'll be making my FIFTH call to them this morning).

What did the doctor say about how long you should wait before getting the vaccine? I’m still fighting that pesky cough. I feel better in general but the nighttime coughing is wrecking my sleep. I did lose 2 pounds due to lack of appetite so I guess there was a bit of a plus to being sick.

Want some motivation? Watch this Steve Harvey video on an 80+ year old woman who lost over 100 pounds after starting her diet and exercise in her 70s. Exercise is walking in home. Part of it is funny!

When my chronic cough is at its worst I go to bed with a halls sugar free in my mouth. Some night I'll probably choke to death and die but it hasn't happened yet and it lets me sleep. Plus I take a ton of Robitussin cough gels (can't stand cough syrup).

The only two medical people I saw for the shingles were the nurse practitioner at urgent care - who shocked me so much at saying shingles that I didn't even think of asking about vaccination - and the ophthalmologist. I'm slow in July and August (relatively) so I'll probably go for the first shingrix shot then.

My birthday dinner party for 12 last night went well. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the birthday girl was happy. I made the main course, a side, and dessert, but others brought the appetizers, salad, and bread, so I had some help and that made it a lot easier for me. We all agreed that we should do that for all of our parties going forward. My main course was skewers of chicken, beef, or shrimp, with veggies and/or pineapple which DH cooked on the grill. I miscalculated how many skewers could be placed on the grill at a time, so the grilling took a bit longer than I had planned, but everyone was enjoying the appetizers and chatting, so I think it worked out in the end. I also made rice pilaf in my slow cooker, and that turned out surprisingly well! I had never made rice in the slow cooker before, but it worked great.

Today I’m in recovery mode. All the party prep is very tiring for me, even though I spread it out and did as much as I could ahead of time. I plan to do nothing today except wash the tablecloths and napkins. Several of my guests, as well as myself, managed to spill something, so I need to tackle those stains ASAP or my white tablecloths will never be white again I’m afraid.

I looked this up for you. That’s the librarian in me. There’s no specific time but the rash should be gone before you get the vaccine. I do the same thing with sticking a cough drop in my mouth before I go to sleep. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t. It hasn’t done a thing for this cough at night. But the good news is the cough is mostly gone. I actually got several hours of sleep before the cough woke me up. I,
‘m only coughing now and then today so the worst is over. It only took 10 days to start feeling better.

Jean, those are impressive stats. Great job, especially when you weren’t feeling well. Today’s the best I’ve felt in 2 weeks. I’m only coughing a little bit today. We felt we’ll enough to get groceries and rub a few errands. I’m sick of being sick so hopefully I’m on the mend.
