As I’ve shared, I’ve been prepping all week to make carrot cake cupcakes for my friend’s surprise 60th birthday party, but our friend texted this morning that she may not be able to come. Her mother was admitted to the hospital last night and at this point they are not sure what is wrong. So for now, the party is on hold, leaving me not knowing whether to bake cupcakes or not. I guess I’ll wait awhile and see if she gets more information. I don’t really have room in my freezer to store them if we don’t do the party tomorrow. I can freeze most of the ingredients, so that is what I’ll do if we have to reschedule.

Pam--Sorry you are in an ambiguous situation. Waiting is a good move as the ingredients can be frozen. Now, I am thinking of the Outback's carrot cake!!

Finally got the all clear for tomorrow’s party, and I just finished the cupcakes. Here’s the one I gave DH:

The party was fun and we pulled off the surprise part! The birthday girl had no clue until everyone yelled surprise. Her best friend even drove up from Austin as part of the surprise, despite getting a call from birthday girl this morning asking her what she was doing today. She lied and told her she had her lawn mower running and needed to get back to it and didn’t have time to talk. She was really trying to get out the door to come up here for the party, lol! My cupcakes were a big hit with everyone, but the birthday girl and hostess were especially pleased since they both love carrot cake.

Any comments on the coconut and pineapple. How’s the birthday girl’s mom?

Today I'm doing the exciting job of filling out CROM's Maryland personal property return. Ah, the glamour of running a non profit rescue organization. Not.

The birthday girl’s mom was suffering from dehydration due to poor nutrition and anxiety. Apparently she eats mostly junk food, doesn’t drink enough fluids, and is a very anxious person. She’s had similar episodes in the past, especially since losing her husband about 4 years ago.

No one commented (at least in my hearing) about the coconut or pineapples. I honestly think most people wouldn’t have known either was there without being told. The flavors blended well together, and I had chopped the coconut and carrots pretty finely in my food processor, so the texture issue many people have with coconut wasn’t a problem. The only person who seemed disappointed was one who had a nut allergy and couldn’t eat one because my cupcakes had walnuts in them.

Today I am resting and doing laundry while DH is out with his church feeding the homeless in Fort Worth. Yesterday was very tiring, but fun.

I had an exciting weekend. On Friday, Midnight bit me which drew blood. I cleaned it and applied antibiotic ointment. Late that evening, I began researching cat bites and saw some horror stories. Saturday morning, I woke up and discovered a nasty finger. I decided to have it seen. I went to the local clinic but the sole doctor on duty was taking care of an ER problem and after waiting an hour, they still didn't know when he would be available.

Since I had an appointment in the city later that morning, I decided to go to Med Express. From the time I walked in there and registered, I left 35 minutes later complete with tetanus shot and antibiotic shot and a ten day supply of antibiotics. I made it to my morning appointment. The doctor added to the stories by telling of one of his patients that ended up in the hospital for several days as the infection spread rapidly. They were very concerned.

This is a pic of the finger 24 hours after the bite.

I had to go back to Med Express yesterday for them to check the finger and make sure I was doing what I was supposed to do. Then I posted this on a FB forum I participate in which has several nurses. Many of them added their experiences as did some others. I guess I was fortunate based upon what some said.

I have to be honest and say that I didn't realize cat bites could be so serious.

One of my friends was the animal control officer. We got our two rescue cats from her. She got a nasty bite on the palm of her hand from a cat she had to capture. She got medical treatment but the hand got worse and she ended up needing surgery. She had to retire on a disability because she lost some of the function of that hand. Before knowing about her experience, I didn’t realize how serious a cat bite could be. From what I understand, their teeth inject bacteria deep into the wound. It’s smart that you got prompt edical treatment for the bite.

Helene--That is typical of some of the stories people told on the other site. One person was in the hospital for almost a week and then went home with a PIC line and antibiotics. The doctor said that some people don't draw blood on the bitee but since it is a needle like opening, they don't worry too much but the opening quickly closes to trap the bacteria inside which then begins its nasty work.

Wow, Jean! I’m glad you got prompt treatment and I hope you don’t have any lasting issues from it. What caused Midnight to bite you? I’d be withholding his treats for a day or two, lol!

I’m seeing the NP at my doctor’s office this afternoon. Since my trip last month I’ve been noticing pain in my right hip that seems to be increasing. Many years ago I had bursitis in my left hip, and I suspect that is what I’m experiencing again. I kept hoping it would get better but it hasn’t and I’m tired of dealing with the pain. I’m also still having intermittent pain in my toes on my left foot and I’m going to try to figure out why. I’m tired of having to keep those toes taped together all the time in order to walk comfortably.

Pam, I hope the NP figures out the source of your pain and has a plan. The leg I had PT has been bothering me quite a bit since coming home. The ride home probably aggravated it. I need to go back to icing, ibuprofen and stretching exercises again. If I sit for longer than a couple of minutes, taking the first couple of steps is very painful. By step 3, I'm okay. I have a physical mid-July. If self care doesn't help. I'll ask about additional PT.

Jean - yes cat bites can be nasty.

Our Lola ripped my thumb once. I stopped at the vet on the way to the walk in clinic to make sure that if anyone called, they were showing Lola as up to date on rabies. Not that I'm a worry wart or anything.

Had another episode during Jessicat's last stay the internist. She was there for around 24 hours while they tried to decide if they could offer any hope. When they decided they couldn't I ended up helping them move her into an exam room so I could spend a little last time with her. During that she bit me good. I didn't say a word. Because she was on chemo her rabies wasn't current and I didn't want them sending her poor little body off somewhere for testing. After she was gone, I did stop at the walk in clinic but didn't admit much to them either.

Ever since my broken heel if I sit too long I can barely walk when I stand up until I've made a couple steps. I'm so used to it I don't even notice any more but every once in awhile someone will see me and comment.

I love watching the Tony's. Haven't made it too far into last night's yet. But while watching the opening I couldn't help but think of Neil Patrick Harris' opening. James Corden is no NPH. Of course he didn't have Lin-Manuel Miranda writing for him like NPH did.

Here's an article that has a clip of that plus two other that folks think are up there.

I missed the Tony's. I set the DVR to tape but I had other things taping too.In FL,I can tape multiple programs. I guess I can only tape 2 on this cable box. Surprisingly, it didn't warn me that I was at my limit. I went to watch it today and found it didn't tape.Boo

That's the kind of reaction I get when I stand up to walk after sitting. My leg freezes in place and I have to make myself take those first couple of steps. After that, I walk normally. I know it's painful to watch. I find myself getting annoyed when family ask if I'm okay for the hundredth time. It'snot the same if you saw it for the first time but asking me if I'm okay when you've seen it that many time only to have me say I'm okay.it's annoying. I feel like it puts a spotlight on me when I wanted to be low key about it.

Pam--I do hope the NP helps you find the issue with the leg. I have a right leg that gives me problems at times. If it isn't the knee, it is some of the muscles.

Helene--I also have the issue of walking "properly" after spending much time sitting, and it is annoying when others make an issue out of it. I know she intends well but the school secretary knows I have multiple health issues, and nearly every time I report to work, as part of her conversation with me is "Are you o.k.?" I guess I should be apprecative as most people around me don't appear to care most of the time.

Maryanne, NPH made a cameo appearance fairly late in the show when James Corden did a song from the bathroom. I didn’t think he was a bad host, bit NPH definitely did it better.

My diagnostic skills were on target. The NP agreed that I’m experiencing bursitis in my hip. She wanted to start me on a 5 day course of prednisone, followed by 600 mg of Motrin 3 times a day until it improves. For my toes, she recommended seeing a podiatrist. She suspects that I might have some scar tissue irritating a nerve in my toes. So I will make an appointment tomorrow with a podiatrist. Or I might hold off and see if the prednisone helps it any. I went to the pharmacy to get the prescription but the pharmacy never got it. I did a bit of shopping and checked back but they still didn’t have it. By then the doctor’s office was closed, so I’ll follow up tomorrow.

Pam--I hope the prednisone helps. If your area is like mine, it might be a good idea to book the podiatrist appointment and then cancel if thought not to be needed. I've waited 3 weeks to get an appointment.

Maryanne--I thought of you and the cats and wondered if you had ever experienced a bite that was a problem. The first thing the doctor asked me about Midnight was if he had all his shots. Fortunately, he had as I had no desire for a rabies shot to be added to the mix I was getting.

I've read Lin's description of writing that opening number for NPH. Apparently it was wild and crazy but what an end product!
