Thank you for the comments on the stats. Overall, I have felt much better and have more energy since doing this. I've lost 5 pounds since the first of June but it is now at a standstill.0

Headline from the online issue of the Baltimore Sun:
Sampling initiative in Baltimore's Inner Harbor aims to answer the question, 'How's the water, hon?'

Jean, 5 pounds in less than a month is great. Plus you tend to lose slowly. You’ll star moving ahead when you body is ready. Keep doing what your doing and the scale will catch up.0

Good one Jean. I’ve lost 6 pounds since the first of June. That’s in addition to 4 pounds in May. I think tracking the food has really helped. Of course these are the same 10 pounds I’ve lost and gained over the years. I’ve got 4 weeks until my physical. I hope to be down another 5 pounds by then. That’s my current motivation.0

Started my day's exercise but it doesn't include walking a dog:
1 -
Walking a dog would be great exercise. Too bad DH has never wanted a dog. I keep saying in my next life or my next husband, whichever comes first, I'm going to have a dog.0
-
For some reason, the mail man brought a ton of packages all at one time today. Mostly toys I ordered to sell at cat shows so I've been opening packages and repacking catnip toys into ziplocs. Try doing that in a house with six cats. Just try!!0
-
I’m a bit surprised that. we never got a dog. DH loves dogs and has to stop and try to make friends with any dogs we encounter on walks. But he’s never expressed interest in having a dog of his own.I would have been open to it.We both love cats l don’t know if we’ll ever be cat owners again because of splitting our time seasonally. We’ve never had a cat that liked car travel.0
-
The last dog we had was when I was a kid. He was a Norwegian Elkhound. The neighbor had a cat so cats began entering our life. No, I have never had a cat th at liked car travel. I think Midnight will be my last cat, not that I don't like cats but at my age I wouldn't want the cat to outlive me when no one in my family likes cats. I'm keeping my fingers crossed with Midnight.0

t's amazing what you can buy on Ebay.
I grew up in a small town named Arendtsville (I'm always amazed when people talk about a "small town" and you find out there were 10,000 people. A-ville had about 500-499 WASPs and one Catholic).
Once upon a time, the company that owned the shoe factory in A-ville also owned factories in two other towns. They had an in-house newspaper called the Blue Ridge Tattler. I bought two on Ebay - one from the spring of 1946 and one from the summer. The spring edition has a big article on the opening of the Arendtsville factory with a photo. Three men in the front, in their own row (of course). A slew of ladies in rows behind them, including my grandmother and my Aunt Viola. (All the ladies in dresses, of course.)
A lot of company news, pictures of folks with birthdays that month, cartoons, inside jokes.
I'm thinking Grandma didn't work there continuously. In the early 50's when they moved my great grandmother into the dining room of their house and she had to take care of her (diabetes), I can't imagine she was working. But I remember her working at the shoe factory later. So she must have gone back. I never worked there but my sister spent a summer there.0 -
How interesting to find some of your family history in that company newspaper. Have you shown it to your dad? I’ll bet it would bring back memories of when he was young.0

Maryanne--That was really a great find to recapture memories.0

I'll definitely take it with me next time I go home. I'm sure that factory coming to town was a big deal. I just never knew before when it happened.0 -

People are always surprised that I grew up 8 miles from Gettysburg but almost never went there. Our little town was fairly self-contained. Two churches and parsonages, 2 grocery stores (one of which had a room that sold small appliances), 2 ball fields, 2 cemeteries, 2 doctors, bank, post office, fire house, building for scout meetings, elementary school, garage, appliance “store” (it was part of someone’s house), hairdresser, barber shop, bar, several places that sold fresh produce in season, ice cream shop, lumber company, and of course the shoe factory.
There was also an abandoned high school. It was still in use in the late 40’s. My mother got her first teaching job there and met my dad at a basketball game. By the time the two of them moved home in the early 50’s it was closed and kids were bused to the high school in the next town over, beginning in 7th grade (which is my alma mater).
Much of the business is gone although the population has risen to 900 or so at the last census. My dad is once again living in the family home, with one of my brothers, My dad's brother's widow still has a house in town.

I’m having a very lazy day today and enjoying it immensely. It seemed like last week had a lot of running around, with various appointments or places I needed to go. Next week also looks like it will be a bit busy as well, so I’m resting up today, reading, playing games on the iPad, and watching Hallmark Christmas movies. At least it looks cool on TV, if not outside my windows right now.
Maryanne, that was a very cool find! Your hometown sounds very quaint and quintessential small town. Almost Norman Rockwellish. Your father will probably enjoy seeing those newspapers.
We had dinner last night with 2 couples we have known for 30+ years. We see them periodically, but hadn’t gotten together in at least a year, despite living less than 2 miles from each other. It was nice to catch up as there have been a lot of changes in everyone’s lives since the last time we saw each other.0 -
When I lived in CT, I was about 5 miles from the Mark Twain house and the Harriet Beecher Stowe house. We never went to either one. I guess when something is close, you figure you can go there any time.
We when to Gettysburg 2 years ago. It was in May but hotter than heck. We bought a CD that did a self guided trip of the town and battlefield. We could easily have spent another another day. It was too much for one day. Your town is really small . My ton is considered small and it’s almost 15,000. Go figure.
Pam, how nice you were able to spend time with old friends. I need to make more effort to do that.0 -
Weird experience yesterday. I had my van to the dealer a couple weeks ago. One thing they did was replace a tire. They probably mentioned which one but it's not on the bill and they couldn't tell me on the phone. One of my tires is losing air. I made an appointment to drop it off yesterday to be looked at today. We drove over. I pulled up to one of the huge doors where you pull in for service on a weekday. It opened. A little surprised, I pulled in, figuring they must work Sunday afternoon at least checking in cars. But no. The whole dealership was empty, including new car sales. So far not seeing a problem, I went to put my keys and instructions in the "night drop". And discovered the "night drop" drops onto the floor, easily accessible every time someone walks near the service door and it opens. So we ended up not leaving my van. Too easy for a thief.0

When I got to college, people would talk about their "small towns" and they were usually 10-20,000 people. Not my definition of small. LOL!
Of course I escaped as soon as I could. Insisted on going to college in a city and never looked back.0 -

That sounds like a great day! I could use one of those.

Maybe you could find a group that needs a permanent foster home. We've done that sometimes. We take responsibility for expenses and taking the cat back if something happens to the person. Or adopt an elderly cat where no one would question you having final instructions to euthanize him/her if something happened to you.
I am struggling to come to terms with the fact that we're too old to ever adopt another kitten.0 -

I had to chuckle at the Scottish lassies. We got back from watching the town fireworks tonight. We met 2 friends and enjoyed the show. We planned to go to a nearby restaurant for dessert. They were just closing the kitchen but graciously agreed to serve us dessert. I split a coconut chia pudding which had pieces of mango in it it’s my friend. It was light and delicious. I had a glass of sangria to go with it. We enjoyed being able to catch up on what everyone has been doing since last fall.0
