Wow! They must have cooked that bird all day. The worst fail I can recall was when one of my aunts cooked one without removing the giblet package first. Since we usually go somewhere for Thanksgiving, I’ve only had to cook the bird a few times myself. The hardest part for me is getting it defrosted in time and finding enough room in the fridge for everything. Even though we usually go to my sister’s home I contribute to the feast. Tomorrow I’ll be baking 2 pecan pies and making a sweet potato casserole. Yesterday I made cranberry sauce since I can’t stand that stuff in the can. We will leave Wednesday morning but we are only staying one night. We have things to do here for the weekend, so we will come back home Thursday evening.

I am not a turkey lover, so I could easily settle for SPAM in lieu of turkey. I've been in Hawaii enoiugh to know that would be an acceptable alternative. You can't mess up SPAM! In reality, I would eat anything other than turkey but usually have ham.

There’s a cat that hangs around my brother’s patio. The cat likes to sleep on one of the chairs. My brother thinks it’s feral. I noticed it’s face was scabby like he?’d been in a fight. DH tried to get a closer look but the cat split. My brother has given DH strict instructions about not befriending or feeding the cat. He’s not a cat person and doesn’t want the cat trying to move in after we leave. Hopefully DH will respect his wishes. DH made a joke about getting some cat treats on his next trip to the store.

We are going to my sister’s house for dinner. I’m making a braised cabbage dish which is made with balsamic vinegar, sliced pears, pecans and Gorgonzola cheese. I made it for a potluck in FL last year. It was a big hit with no leftovers. It’s not traditional Thanksgiving but it’s what I wanted to make. My sister okayed it. She’s doing turkey and some sides. Her neighbor is making a ham, some veggie sides and 2 pies. It should be a delicious meal.

I looked online at the menu for the Thanksgiving brunch we're taking my dad to Thursday (weather permitting). Strange. Unless DH's mouth is still hurting from his dental I'll make a real turkey Friday or Saturday.

Thanks for quoting. I Will Survive was a hoot. Did I ever mention we have flocks of wild turkeys in our neighborhood? If I came face to face with the, I’d be scared.

I came very close to signing up for that Noom program at $139 for a year until I read the fine print that said it would be renewed automatically at the end of the year unless I notified my coach. Two words: automatically and coach. I despise being bugged by an outsider. According to them I should lose 25 pounds in a year on the plan they developed.

Luckily, we’ll only be driving a half hour to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. And we can use local roads so traffic shouldn’t be a problem. I’m makin a vegetable dish to take over to dinner. It’s braised cabbage and sliced pears with a balsamic glaze. When it’s baked, I top it with pecans and Gorgonzola cheese.I made it for a church potluck last year and there were no leftovers. So I considered that thumbs up. Hopefully the Thanksgiving group likes it as well.

Copying for Helene and to say great sentiments!!

The past 18 months have been horrendous - broken wrist, surgery, cardiac issues, shingles - but it appears I've come out the other side and I'm ready for 2020 to be a better year!

This will be funnier when I'm a few days removed from yesterday's horrid "restaurant" experience. How they managed to make something look like a roasted turkey and taste like a processed turkey I have no clue.

They had such a huge response to their Thanksgiving buffet that they moved it from the restaurant to their ballroom (where speech echo'd like an airplane hanger) and added hours. The food was terrible. But I got to see my dad and two of my siblings so that was good!

Maryanne, I’m sorry your dinner wasn’t good, but glad you enjoyed your time with your dad and siblings. At least there was a bright spot to the day.

I enjoyed my time with my sister and family. My BIL wasn’t as big a PITA as usual, so that was nice. We had a big meal but really only had to make the side dishes and dressing yesterday. We had a smoked turkey so there was no need to cook the bird, which is a huge time and work saver. My sister had invited a couple from their church who would have been alone and they were very nice and funny to be around. She also brought a side dish and gravy, so that saved us more work as well. DH and I got home around 9:00 last night.

Today I’m up early waiting for FedEx to deliver the last of the 3 rugs we bought from Turkey while we were on our trip. This one was misrouted to New York instead of being delivered with the other one we had purchased. I’m excited to see it because it was still under construction while we were there, so I can’t wait to see the finished rug. We saw one like it but in a slightly different size while we were there, but ours was being made off site. Apparently most of their rugs are made in individual homes, so except for a few demonstration looms at the site, almost all of the rugs are made elsewhere. The female family members are all trained in the process and this is their industry. Females are preferred because of their smaller hands, which makes it easier to make the tiny double knots used in constructing the rugs. It’s something like 9,000 knots per square inch, which I find mind-boggling!

Maryanne, sorry your dinner was a disappointment. I guess you won’t be going there next year. You and your family will probably laugh about how bad it was at future gatherings. We had a lovel day. There were 8 of us for dinner. The neighbors and her brother were invited and Marianne made almost half the dinner. She baked a ham, made homemade cranberry sauce, baked sweet potatoes and pumpkin and pecan pie. Her brother is in the wine business so he brought some of his company’s wine. My sister and her significant other did 2 turkey breasts, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, rolls and veggies. I made DH’s gf stuffing, and a cabbage and pear side dish. Marianne’s husband braked she made the world’s best pecan pie. I had a small piece to try it and he was right. I usually find pecan pie to sweet and one bite is enough. I told her that her pie wasn’t overly sweet and she said she cuts the sugar in all her baking. I don’t like super sweet so her pie was perfect. I had a little of everything but no seconds. I left satisfied but not uncomfortably stuffed.
Pam, your meal sound lovely as well. It’s nice when people contribute dishes and the hostes doesn’t have to do all the work.

That's the only restaurant open on holidays in Gettysburg so I can't count on not going back.

Helene - your family's Marianne is definitely more of a cook than this family's Maryanne.

Pam - making those rugs sounds incredibly difficult!
