2019: We Are Making a Difference!

What an amazing difference in your cat’s coat. Kudos to you for giving him a happy home. Is there a town near Gettysburg that might have. Better quality of restaurant. The family might be easy to convince if you make the suggestion while the poor quality meal is fresh on their tongues.0

I know y’all are probably tired of hearing about my rugs, but I’m really in love with this one that we just got today. Here’s what it looks like.
The difference in color occurs depending on which side you’re looking from and how the light is hitting the nap of the rug. All of the rugs done this, but it’s especially pronounced on this one.0 -
Pam-The rug is beautiful. This is truly something to be treasured from your trip.
Maryanne--Sorry that your meal out was so bad. Perhaps the SPAM would have been a good option.
Helene--It sounds as if you had a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner.
Today will be the first day I have ventured out of the house since the 30 minutes of last Sunday. Motivation? Food plus a package at the Post Office.0 -
That’s the same rug from different angles? If so, that’s amazing! The rug is really beautiful. I can see why you bought it. And the fact that it’s custom adds to it being special.0

Helene, yes it’s the same rug. I took the pictures from opposite ends to show how dramatic the difference is. It’s less pronounced on the runner that you can see in one of the pictures, but also very noticeable in the one we bought for the den as well. That one is predominantly black with cream accents in the borders, and the borders change a lot depending on which side of it you are standing on.
Unfortunately, the beautiful rug in the living room is really highlighting how unattractive my living room sofa is! I recovered it several years ago and I’ve never liked the fabric choice I made once it was on the sofa. It was a cheap sofa to begin with and we’ve had it for more than 30 years, so I’m ready to send it off to Goodwill and find a new one, but it will have to wait awhile. The budget is already maxed out with the rug purchases at this point. I’m watching my neighborhood app where people often post furniture and other items they want to get rid of, hoping I’ll find something that would work for a reasonable price.0 -

In the meantime, maybe you could put a pretty throw and some new pillows on the couch to hide the ugly.0

Wish he were mine but that's from the internet, I'm afraid.
Interestingly I'm not sure anyone else was as appalled as I was. Maybe they just like the convenience? We used to drive to York but Dad doesn't want to go that far any more.0 -
How far is York and what difference does it make if someone else drives him? I’d rather have a good meal than go to the closest place.0

Maryanne--I have made a special trip to Columbus, Ohio to dine at a restaurant we don't have in our state. That takes 3 hours each way over good roads. It is a challenge by the time I return, so I can understand why a trip to York might not be a high priority.
I read an interesting article on the involvement of Amazon in the Baltimore area. I am now watching the update on the effect of Ezekiel.0 -
I was assuming you’d drive to Gettysburg since that’s where your dad lives. There must be nearby towns that have a wider selection of restaurants than you have in Gettysburg. So the only extra travel would be to the restaurant. Another option is to order a pre-cooked dinner from Giant. They have a few choices of meat and you get the sides and dessert packed in a carton. The food is cooked but you have to reheat it. You order it and pick it up the day before the holiday. I’ve ordered a turkey dinner in past years. It came with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, rolls and pie. We did a turkey breast because we were a family of three but you can get a whole turkey for larger families. They also had ham or roast beef. If your dad has a working oven, that might be a better option than a restaurant for the next holiday.0

Nope, nowhere nearer Gettysburg with restaurants than York, Harrisburg or maybe Hanover. All a decent drive. Gettysburg's the "big city" in its area, so to speak.
On our way out this year, I did mention the possibility of ordering dinner. We'll see. LOL!0 -

Don’t even ask them about ordering dinner. Just do it. The dinner is well packed. You might have to throw some ice packs in with for the travel. Once they have one, they probably see the wisdom in doing that since you have to drive so far to find a decent restaurant. I sometimes ordered extra sides if I thought I’d run short. My FL sister will stay with us for Christmas. I may just order a box dinner for the 4 of us, plus their dog. It makes meal prep so easy and there are no pots to scrub.0

Pam--Love the treadmill "prescription."
Nutrisystem is advertising this BOGO deal, or buy one month and get one month free. I went to check it out. Basically, the BOGO is just one way to sign up. It involves you paying the full price for the first month and zero the second month; each month after that is cheaper than if you selected the one in which the price is reduced on all months. To save on the BOGO, you basically have to get 3 months of shipments. You also can select the "weekends off" approach or the full week of NS foods. The I once ordered but I remember how much I loved the scones when I first began and then they disappeared.
There is a girl at school who has lost a large amount of weight. I asked her how she was doing it and she said her foster mother bought her Lean Cuisine products and she ate those with just a few veggies added.0 -

What a nice thing for a foster mom to do! I'm sure the girl was thrilled you noticed.0 -
My SIL is a Type 2 diabetic and needs to lose at least 20 pounds, by her own admission. She is constantly trying one diet approach after another, with no real results. She is gung-ho for whatever the diet du jour is for a week or two, then falls off the wagon. I’ve suggested Nutrisystem to her several times but she has always been resistant until a week or so ago. She mentioned that she was considering it so I forwarded her the email I received from them yesterday. By the time I talked to her later, she had talked herself out of it again. She decided she could just go to the store and buy frozen meals and cook her own breakfasts. I don’t think she will have any more success with this approach, but I wish her luck. In my opinion, her problem is lack of consistency and follow through. She does lack freezer space, so I can see where NS might be challenging for her since I told her most of the shelf stable foods wouldn’t please her. I’ve stopped trying to suggest solutions for her because she shoots down all of my ideas, but it is frustrating since she keeps telling me her frustrations and her latest plans to try to lose weight.0

Suggest that she look into Noom. There are no special foods and nothing is off limits. It’s a psychology and group support system. I started with a free 2 week trial. You can cancel during the trial with no penalty. I’ve been on it for 8 weeks and I’m finding it helpful. I’m taking a new look at what choices I make and why. I’m more focused on what areas I need to work on (exercise). Traveling over the holiday has slowed me down but I don’t feel like I’ve gained. I won’t really know for sure until I get to FL and have access to a scale again. I’ve logged my meals everyday. That’s a first for me. I was resistant or inconsistent about logging with WW and NS. On this plan, I can see the bigger picture and how making better food choices helps my progress. I’m happy with a pound a week so I’m not looking for a quick fix this time.0

Sometimes all you can do is nod encouragingly and wish folks the best.0 -
DH is still having issues with his tongue so I made a weird casserole for dinner tonight. Leftover mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy with finely chopped leftover turkey. He looked at it funny but admitted it tasted good. LOL!
I also worked on making turkey corn soup. Felt like a pioneer woman except I doubt any pioneer woman ever had to practice law while dealing with turkey leftovers.
I do feel none of this turkey will go to waste. I'm definitely going back to Butterball for Christmas though. I was so proud of my organic, free range turkey with pop up timer but it definitely wasn't the best turkey we ever had.0 -
Helene, I did suggest NOOM and she poo pooed it, too. I actually think she might do well with that program, but couldn’t convince her to even try it for the free trial period.0

Pam, you’ve tried your best with SIL. Maybe she’s just not ready to make a change for the sake of her health. It may take having to be on medication for her diabetes to make a difference. Until she’s ready, you can’t help her. I would drop the whole subject unless she brings it up and asks for help. At that point, ask if her doctor has referred her to a nutritionist. With diabetes, her health insurance should cover some sessions one on one. She probably needs a better understanding of the healthy foods she should eat. And perhaps she would take guidance from a medical professional that she won’t take from family.0
